I am, are you??? At least I'm honest......

Are you envious of the multimillionaires who have made it big over something so simple as letters and numbers?

Come now I know you are cause I certainly am. How could I have missed the boat when ive been in domaining for 10+ years I keep asking myself??

Where did I go wrong? Dropping those 3 number dot coms years ago, not following a plan like rs has done for 20 years and is laughing all the way to the bank.

I know I messed up big time when the 4l dot coms I hung onto for years and i dropped took off in value like a rocket.

Im certain this industry is full if people with major regrets if you have stuck it out for many years. What other industry is like domaining? You can't compare stocks to it like people tend to do IMO.

I realized I'm just not that great at it I guess not paying attention to a plan or looking at what was really gonna be worth high value in time.

The key I realize now is scarcity = high value once the world took notice bof domains in general. Look at just 2 number dot coms from # 10 to 99 there's 89 2 n dot com in the world period. That's what I should have been using as my baseline, scarcity and dot com only! Dah

Of course many have and will make $$$ on their portfolio but its as limited few IMO who will rake in the real big $$$$$ , those who we envy and hate at the same time.

I'm just venting as it's the new year beginning and hopefully those of us who missed the big $$$ will have some better luck in time to come!!

Here's to all those new millionaires, NOT!! LOL
:P

Well, I'm not a pro "yet" but looking at your names in your sig. It seems your chasing the waves. You need to ride the wave as you were when you had 3N's and 4L's. From your experience what will be big in 2026?, whats going to be rare in 2026?

Why did you drop 3N's?, that's just wrong... :)

I regret not listening to a guy in 2001 "ish" telling me about all the great .com's he owned. 3L's, one words etc. I was more interested in building and flipping computers at the time....

Yes I had 2 3n com in 2005 dropped in 08. oops!!

My biggest problem was letting domains lapse.

Making mistakes is common in everyone's life. But, some people repeat the same mistakes.

No principles, no strategy, no deep thought process, no insightful analysis......no intention to learn...

I am not a pro in domaining. But, I saw people in stock market doing same mistakes repeatedly.

It is difficult to believe that they are in that field for more than 10 years when you see their decisions.

Envy maybe but no jealous. The older I get I never look back and think what if but rather look forward.

You may be holding something more valuable and just don't realize it yet.

I made a mistake this year that could bring me 30.000 usd for a domain, but i was too greedy and unexperienced to get only the 10% of that. It was a huge mistake. But after all I am still happy with what ive got and it was a good lesson.

I am convinced that i have some other domains that could bring some good deals. I just dont give up. I believe in it.

Thanks for the input folks I always get like this at this time of year.

The 3n com lapse was my biggest regret of course will take awhile for that sting to heal. Thats the thing with domaining over time u see the screw ups too easily from all the posted sales each week.

Shoulda, coulda, woulda...

I read of one unlucky dude who sold tons of 4l com following bad advice and lost over $300k not too long ago.

Everyone has their story in this biz for sure.

Even rs lost $200 k + on flowers.mobi.

Moving on...

Jealous not at all. Why be jealous? Why not study study study and study some more then and put in some hard work. Then maybe you will and see some better results. There no need to be jealous there's tons of money in this business. Enough for everyone. If you not making money figure out why and do something about it .....We can't cry about the past missing boats. There's always new things emerging in this business a lot of us are late and missed the chance to buy short .coms cheap but there's a new boat being created all the time. Find it figure it out and capitalize on it!

Normal life mistakes: You lose only valuable time in achieving your goals.

Investment life mistakes: You lose both time and money - sometimes serious money - even difficult to bounce-back.

Sometimes as in your case, missing the lifetime opportunity.

But, we should show strength and willingness to learn from mistakes and bounce back in life.

That makes life interesting.

Appreciate your genuine confessions. However feeling regret doesn't help in entrepreneurship. And making mistakes helps a lot.. You learn from mistakes. You just need to focus on future and do not make same mistakes again and then success will come afterward.

I've had those feelings. Heck, in Feb it will be a decade since I joined NP! One thing I've learned, recently really to my detriment, is that the future brings opportunities and that I have to stay vigilint and creative to take advantage of them. I'm guilty of having a "everything that will ever be invented/discovered has already been invented/discovered" mindset in the past.

My first computer was a 386! I was online as early as '95. No awareness at that time to look for investment opportunities in technological advancement. No awareness of the significance of what was happening.

In 2001 I was in community college and I used to hang out in the college lounge and I had this idea to make a webpage for the lounge - everyone could just go to the page to keep up with news and friends, etc. I even registered a domain on this registrar called Gandhi for that purpose. I tried to build the page using FrontPage. I blame FP for destroying my interest in html at that time. Nothing came of it. But early facebook anyone? Yeah. Talk about missed opportunities.

I used the internet in late 90s early 2000s to guess what? Hook up with chicks. Yup. There's my claim to being an internet pioneer.

Whatever fuels your fire, use it to further your dreams.

There are plenty of missed opportunities that surround us all, but it only takes 1 caught opportunity to propel you to success.

Moving forward... don't drop domains with small possible combinations, short lengths, or that you bought for a specific reason.

Jealous?

No, not at all and started purchasing domains no later than 1997-98.

Purchased domains in niche marketplaces and do regret not being more of a diversified visionary but hey, that's on me.

And I'm absolutely not jealous of all of those folks who spent gazillions on names that were eventually dropped like the lead balloons they were.

Some speculators were in tune with growing and emerging marketplaces, took risks and made tons, while others lost tons on their risky speculative purchases..

I think 'Jealous' is the wrong word, envious is perhaps better.

When you look back over the past 20 years I am also envious of what others achieved in so many fields of endeavour, but thankfully I am not jealous. If in my thirties (some 20 years ago) I had understood what would become with domains and did nothing then I would perhaps be bitter and become self misguided enough to be jealous, but as it is it was not until the early 2000's that I realised that understanding human nature and applying it to registering and selling domains could be an interesting occupation.

Today I registered 6 domains that I think will become valuable, I was surprised they were available, but there was also over 300 domains that I checked that are already registered - should I be jealous of the owners of all those domains? Of course not.

As I said above perhaps 'envious' would be a better word.

I keep away from jealous people, have them around you and they'll bring you down or try their very best to do so.

I look at successful people in any industry and just say 'fair play' and 'well done' - In domaining and what I'm investing in (future tech) i just want a slice of the pie, no one can eat it all.

Jealous; No, Inspired; Yes!

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." - Albert Einstein

Like you; sold many 5N, CCC, 4L (com) for cheap, but once realized my mistakes I waited for a market bubble and repurchased more for a little higher price, live and earn and make the necessary adjustment.

You can't Copy Success but you can be inspired by it to build (rebuild) your own. Research, research, research and look hard for other people "missed opportunities" and invest in other folks' "mistakes"

New year, new resolution to Not repeat past mistakes...Best :)
