There has been a lot of hype about .in and .co.in domains, but the question is, are they really selling, there seem to be too many being registered vs those being sold.

you need to give .co.in + .in between 2-5years to see anything tangible i think. Thats why you need to reg those .co.in(s) for $10 at whiz.in(or wherever has the same prices) because you will need to give these names sometime, and you might as well purchase it fora few years for cheaper(while their promos are going on). On the other hand, if you are not willing to pay $10 for a .co.in or $16 for the .in, then you have a poor name, in an underdog extension.

Also, if your .co.in(s) and or .in(s) are getting traffic and revenue, waiting is not so boring or expensive :)

There is demand for all combinations of LLL.in. Any LLL.in can sell for over reg fee. Otherwise, if you can't sell your LLL.in, you should reevaluate your prices.

When Indians get rich
When do you think that will be? The irony is that most foreigners think of all of us as living in slums... you'll be well served in looking at the list of the world's richest men. At least three in the top 10 are Indians... Mukesh Ambani (#1), Lakshmi Mittal, Kumarmangalam Birla & Ratan Tata are people of note.

True for any extension unless you're doing the marketing imho. See the .us thread I started. I can't get $27 for my .us while people are negotiating 6 figure sales :hehe:

He's sharp but I don't think so.

Mukesh got the chunk of the estate... Anil got the rest.

Anil has almost caught up and that is commendable.

Yes once Reliance Power lists he would overtake Mukesh

That is really awesome

Do you really think that this wealth is sustainable? They are primarily riding on a stock market boom, a lot of which can be attributed to a media movement promoting the Indian economy.

Look at the list of top 100 brands in the world. Not a single Indian brand in there.
In contrast, Japan has several such brands (Toyota, Honda, Sony, etc.) in the top 100 list, but less billionaires than India. Brands require time and sustainability to build; stock based wealth does not.

Yes, we are getting rich, but not at the rate it appears. There has been no real reduction in the number of people living in poverty.

Three richest men (or even 30 or 300 or 3000) are not representative of millions of people living in India. I think if we want to sell to end-users, generally they will care about those millions... not a small percentage of rich people who are Indian.

And when I said "only the real premiums are selling", I mean something like poker.in.

For example, meteor.com is worth at the very least $x,xxx.
But I cannot sell meteor.in for even $75.

The keyword has to be Real Premium.
Or at least, matches the extension / can be used as a domain hack.

Yes. Its not only stock based, stock based wealth due to strong essentials. One of the major reasons that the stock market is where it is that foreign companies find the Indian Elephant a joy to ride. ;)

Top 100 consumer brands... probably not, but there are tons of verticals where Indian brands do list in the top 10.

There has been - I agree disparity has increased at places... but when I got out of college the pay I was offered as a BE was about 1/3rd of what a new grad gets today.

Question ... have you thought carefully about meteor.in?

Is it really valuable? What kind of business could use it?

Simply having a dictionary keyword is not enough. It needs a real business purpose.

There is a lot of media hype, people forget that infrastructure is extremely poor. Even in parts of large cities like Mumbai there is no electricity for 3-5 hours daily.

I agree dnk, but where there's a will there's a way.

Heard of eChoupal by ITC? Look it up. Their computers run on car batteries and even cycle power and cows churning the dynamo.

It has increased the sale price of produce by about 20% for the farmers... at least where it's been implemented. Thats the grassroots level of involvement we need - and it is leading to improvements in poverty levels too.

When I bought the name, .in was being hyped by people in the forums... So yeah, I was rather foolish in choosing the names. I did not think about its use for business.

Actually it could be nicely developed for meteor sightings website.
http : // meteor.in / place_name

But that's not my point...
My point is, to sell for big money you have to own something like poker.in.
The names are selling but generally only the Premium ones.

This is to answer the original question,
"are they really selling, there seem to be too many being registered vs those being sold."

That Ekal is sharp! I have made this mistakes many times. Regged a .in , or .co.in because it was a "great dictionary word". That doesn't guarantee any sales by itself. As you say Ekal (secret secret code name!), it need a business purpose. So, members, remember that when regging! When you register it, do you really think you are the first to find it, or others have passed it by, or let it expire? IMHO
