Why .in and .co.in domains do NOT sell?

Just wondering what could be the reasons behind dismal sales of .in and .co.in domains?

Sales reports (dnjournal, sedo, afternic, etc) and auctions (T.R.A.F.F.I.C, roundtable, domainfest, etc) hardly has any .in or .co.in domains sold.

Is it because:

- .in/.co.in etc did not take of ?
- .com dominates Indian domain space?
- too many extensions in India such as .in, .co.in, .org.in, .firm.in, .net.in?
- anything else?

Will investments in Indian extensions becomes dead money or should we take a chance and invest some?

Thanks.

.Com is undoubtedly preferred by everyone. Nevertheless, my best .ins get significant traffic. Personally, I would only work to acquire the highest-quality .in names -- and then use them.

I hope you guys with your .in and .co.in domains make a fortune but I must agree with Smith. I know many, many entrepreneurs from India and at least for now they are still nuts for .com. However I do feel these .in and .co.in names are certainly worth some speculation. However in my own case I have 100% .coms.

.ins get a huge amount of traffic. They are really equivalent to .de or .co.uk in their power. They just need another year or 2 to ramp up in aftermarket values.

Another thing to note, the names with traffic, no one is selling right now :)

Most of the big portals/ high profile companies (owned by Indian companies) use .com and American/foreign companies in India use .in

(slightly off topic) I'm curious to know why Namecheap allow registrations of .in, but not .co.in (at least last time I looked). Is there supposed be some kind of restriction on .co.in?

I am not a big fan of TLD but my business needs made me to reg one domain today.

BZT.in

But not for domaining purposes.:)

the proble is that double choice...

.co.in kills .in

One of the 2 should disappear

I believe that once enom, godaddy, and the other big-name registrars offer .in registration, values will explode. The problem is that only domainers are aware of .in and where to register them. Whoever is managing the extension (is it afilias?) really needs to talk to these big registrars and pressure them to start offering it.

.com is right now the pace of indian domain market..another big thing is online shopping is not very active in india now as compared to US or european countries

But things are changing...many big online shopping sites now with .in as extension and thousands of vistors everyday that making .in more popular than .com now

some examples

ebay.in
indiaplaza.in
Themobilestore.in

earlier when .com was present, yahoo mail was very popular with .co.in..but now .in is booming in indian markets

so the future is big..big..because internet and mobile usage is exploding in india and around 2010,the .in domain industry will be in glamour

only worry is now .in and .co.in getting at offer price around $3.95,but the renewal fee will be around $13.95 that is not a cheap amount for indian domain investor.

A good majority of people using computers in India access internet from cybercafes.

There are a lot of infrastructure and other bottlenecks that prevent people from
becoming web savvy.

Paypal allowed funds to be withdrawn to indian credit cards and bank accounts only a
month ago.

Facilities that are taken for granted in the western world is still yet to be a reality in India.

Dot in is in the stage where dot com was in 1990. It will pick up and people would
be referring 2007...2010 as the good era of dot in domaining IMHO

I have to disagree and will say that in the next year or two the .in extension will began to increase in value and definitely become more regged.

Buying or selling a ccTLD kind of domain names, after all, is based on a country's economy primarily, in the long run.

As in other ccTLD domains, some hot keyword+.IN/.CO.IN can be profitable. However, .IN/.CO.IN has a long way to go to achieve blossom. At present, .IN/.CO.IN has no ways to compete with .CO.UK, .DE and some other ccTLD domains in the total market performance. India, like every other nation, has something unique that can be created as precious domain gems, if you know what they are, that are important and special for India. However, many foreigners don't know or don't care about the essence of .IN/.CO.IN domains, and just register as many .IN/.CO.IN domains as they consider them profitable, with outsiders' ignorant speculations and or with westerners' idealistic expectations.

Domain names are primarily interacting with economy, domestically and internationally. In the world economy system, generally, advanced economies' domain names are more valuable and more profitable than non-advanced economies' domain names. At present, unfortunately, India is not an advanced economy.

For most average-word .IN domains, at present, the more you buy, the more disappointment you own.

I will try to live with the disappointment. :)
