Just wondering what could be the reasons behind dismal sales of .in and .co.in domains?

Sales reports (dnjournal, sedo, afternic, etc) and auctions (T.R.A.F.F.I.C, roundtable, domainfest, etc) hardly has any .in or .co.in domains sold.

Is it because:

- .in/.co.in etc did not take of ?
- .com dominates Indian domain space?
- too many extensions in India such as .in, .co.in, .org.in, .firm.in, .net.in?
- anything else?

Will investments in Indian extensions becomes dead money or should we take a chance and invest some?

Thanks.

* The .in registry eased registration restrictions and made .in available to everyone in 2005. So from a domainer's perspective, the Indian cctld aftermarket is new. Thus, domainers are much more likely to buy directly from the registry rather than from private resellers. In terms of the reseller market, sales of high-quality .in domains are frequent, but very low margin. My higher margin sales of .in have been from unsolicited enduser inquiries.

Note: LLL.in composed entirely of the letters ABCDEFGHILMNOPRST, were "bought out" at the end of March 2007. Overall, over 5000 LLL.in domains composed of lesser quality letters remain unregistered. About 1500 or more LLL.in domains have been registered in the last week as a result of the directi registration sale.

* .Com dominates all international domain markets.

* The numerous extensions do depress the resale value of a typical domain. Conversely though, it also expands the overall market by making a supply of good names available to actual Indian endusers.

Take time to explore previous sales and information available at Namepros and elsewhere. A solid, profitable business plan can be formulated for .in, but it requires work. If you don't have a good, informed plan, you will lose money.

To find out about the .in /.co.in sales .. you could go to namebio.com check it and I believed the *.in and *.co.in are the big next thing will happen really soon.

I agree, I think they will be the next big thing. India's population is staggering, over a billion people. I think it'll take a few years, though. I think once more registrars like godaddy offer it, it'll begin to pick up.

Wait for couple of years and you will see good future!

Already Poker.in sold for $60k. So that is a good start.
they do sell, but until there are no big end users in the playing ground, .in stays a bit behind other tld's and other cctld's.

But anyway, I believe they are one of the future cctld's where one can still find good regs.

I believe that 2 things will make the .co.in and .in domains explode in value in say 5 years:

#1 Domains population is the second largest only to china and 4 times that of the US. The internet traffic will be there once the infrastructure is made widely available

#2 India's economy is growing at a staggering pace. As more and more Indian business's go online and the general public because wealthy enough to own a computer and pay for access as well as the infracture spreading, you will be millions of new end users for domains. I feel .co.in and .in is where you should be come 2012.

anyone know of any immediate plans for larger registrars (godaddy, enom..) to offer .in registrations?

Thanks.

At this point in time if I was an Indian national I'd be looking more at regging names that have parking potential rather than thinking in terms of immediate sales. I suspect Internet usage in India is very, very low in relation to the country's population. With greater prosperity over the next five years the number of people with access to the Net will explode and domain parking may become a viability for local domainers with good Indian traffic names. Parking with .COM names really took off in 2001 and I think the same phenomena will occur with Indian names in a five to 10-year time frame. I believe .CO.IN names will be the parking stars. The click payment rate will be good for nationals holding domain names but I suspect they'll be somewhat disappointing for Westerners expecting to make a buck from parking Indian names.

I'd be doing a lot of research and coming up with good traffic names and taking a longer-term view.

What do others think? Does this make sense?

Many Indian companies will reg an alternate name instead, if the name they want is taken

patience my friends

patience my friends.
we soon all will be millionaires as long as we can afford to pay the annual reg fees.

Just throwing it out there, but I think usage of the extension might be an issue at the moment. I was in Mumbai for a week and the only .in I saw was Barclays.in, the rest of the domains I saw were .com / .net / .org

imo - As soon as internet use takes off in India - the .in's and .co.in will be a better deal for site owners than the nets orgs coms....will have to be patient...a few years for sure.

I feel .in and .co.in domains are the one of the best investments at the moment. But some patience is required to expect great returns.

I hope you guys with your .in and .co.in domains make a fortune but I must agree with Smith. I know many, many entrepreneurs from India and at least for now they are still nuts for .com. However I do feel these .in and .co.in names are certainly worth some speculation. However in my own case I have 100% .coms.

BTW Smith, start posting some Dubai updates in my thread. Don't be a stranger.
