ICANN has opened the public comment period on registry applications for two character domain names in five new gTLDs. The new gTLDs are .BERLIN, .GLOBAL, .JETZT, .KIWI and .NEUSTAR. Some of the applications are unusual, especially the JETZT one. It is only applying for go.jetzt for use in its marketing It will probably seek to emulate COInternet's use of go.co as a portal to drive usage of the gTLD. Some of the new gTLD registries intend auctioning or selling the two character domains.

I read some time ago where .xyz and some others were doing this too.

Sadly, 2 character domains in XYZ won't be free, they will be 50% off reg fee. :)

There seems to be a mix of reasons behind this. Some of the registries want to auction them off but others want to build usage. With that robot-registration thing, .XYZ has stored up a lot of bad karma and it would be hard for it to auction the two character domains. It would be a bad decision for the auctions at this stage because there is no established secondary market for these gTLDs and demand just hasn't ramped up yet.

I don't think this will be very popular. The article says, quite rightly, that 2L domains can be quite valuable, but a 2L domain based on a new gTLD is going to be a very difficult sell in my opinion.

I believe that country code pairs are going to be excluded across the board, and there are very few two letter words that have meaning anyway. And so the domains that will be left to reg are ones like:

xz.berlin
xo.xyz

Hmm, I don't see much value here! lol.

If you want a shorter domain name you will most likely buy a LL.co or any other LL.LL and LL.LLL.

I don't see a point to get a LL.anything

The NEUSTAR application seems to want to use country code pairs to offer guides to services or related content but it won't allow external registrations. That gTLD is a .BRAND one rather than an open one.

Maybe not high values but there will always be people who think that some two character pairs will be valuable. If the move to sell these immediately then they will effectively be selling them at the bottom of the market.

2 letters still to long - when will 1 letters start? :)

Btw. GoDaddy lists some 1-letters for sale if you search. Just after selecting it a second check shows You can not buy. What does this mean?

I don't think this is the right question. Shorter doesn't necessarily mean that a name becomes more valuable... Also, it has to be said that many of the new gTLDs will fail, and fail miserably.

Why is that?..

Well, the major value, to be found in gTLDs as a whole, is their ability to be a "hack". Unfortunately, however, there aren't many good gTLD hacks in existence!

Well, at least with ccTLD 1-chars have some special status. They allow to produce the shortest domain possible. This gives them special technologicall benefits (100x better than 2chars) and also they are special in terms of rare.

I never had to drop any 1-char - allways could sell it with profit, at least a little profit, and also quite fast. Even a "0" (zero).

Yes, very true. 1 char ccTLDs are, potentially, quite valuable but we still need to consider the TLD.

For example, a member on this forum owns n.et. This is a domain that should be worth a fortune. However, because the TLD relates to Ethiopia, a country that has no economic base and few laws, its perceived value is viciously diminished...
