So my friend owns SomeCompany.com (not real name ) and the trademark for Some Company. He has run a small business with this name for years. There is a large company name Some Company Inc that has been bugging him for years to acquire the domain and the trademark. He has finally decided he is not going to continue using the domain and wants some guidance with how to approach the situation.

Have any of you sold a domain that was being used? The name is not a keyword rich name and simply a way for the company to have its name without an inc on the end. Any ideas on price?

how can anyone give you idea on price for "somecompany.com", when they don't know the actual domain or who the interested party is?

imo...

He should ask the big company to make him an offer for the domain name and trademark.

Just don't tell big company that he has decided to let the name go. Tell them he wants some extra cash for a business expansion or new investment, and would consider selling the name if they made a worthwhile offer - one that would more than compensate him for all the trouble associated with a name change.

In other words, let them think he can still walk from the deal if they don't offer a good price. And let them think that it will be a major inconvenience for him to sell them name.

Also, do a search to see how many other companies use the same name. More companies means a higher price. It also means alternative buyers.

How many full-time employees does the company have?

How long have they been using their name?

More of either means more value in the transaction.
