Ok, here's the prob:

A year ago, my cpu's fan wouldn't stop so I cleaned the cpu and everything worked fine.

So today, my cpu's fan wouldn't stop and I thought I'd just clean the cpu like last time and everything would be ok.

So I opened it up, cleared the dust off and then closed it up again. When I tried switching the pc on though, it wouldn't go on. There might have been this burnt smell when I tried to switch it on.

I'm going to re-open the cpu in a minute...anyone know what could have happened?

Thanks. :loveyou:

Burnt smell? Any smoke?

If the power supply fries it'll smell like its burnt and usually give off some smoke.

It could have been a bunch of different things though. Best bet is too open it up again like you said you were.

Nope, no smoke and no sound. Just a slight burnt smell...I opened it up again and everything looks fine. I did some sniffing around to locate the burnt smell thing but I couldn't locate it. So now I'm more confused than ever.

When I opened the cpu, I was extremely careful not to hit or move anything, so I don't know what could have happened.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that no data is lost...:(

Have you checked for bad contacts on all the cables from the power supply to the Motherboard and Drives? Have you removed the CPU again, checked for any broken or bent pin and put it back on again? Is your mains power cable properly inserted?

Does anyone know what the cpu indicator light is? Mine's blinking...except my pc still won't go on.

make sure before you open the cpu cover, (1) you remove the plug from socket, (2) discharge any static electricity you have in your hand, by touching the cpu with your palm open up. (3) see if all the ribbon cables of your drive are connected, in order to avoid damaging the cables, grab as much of the cable as possible between thumb and fingers and wiggle the whole thing gently from side to side to free it's from it's socket, then return it back all again.

I've had this problem with my CPU before.

Have you made sure its in secure enough?

My problem was that I didn't have it pinned in properly and it wouldn't start or if it did, it'd reset half way through.

I just found out yesterday that the thing I was cleaning was the 'heat sink'. So I removed the fan, cleaned the heat sink and then placed the fan back on.

I then used a blow dryer (cool air) to blow the dust out...

Nothing in there looks like it's moved, and nothing is loose or unpinned. Can't seem to figure out what's wrong.

I want to make sure it's something I can't fix myself, before I send it for repairs. After what happened to Edison Chen, I'm a little sceptical about these computer repair shops. :D

Dezi, hearing that you smelled some burning there could be a slight chance that your prozessor overheated(i guess you didn't put some new cooling paste on the CPU?)

But, it also could be that your power supply died on you, even when they appear dead they supply a little bit juice to the main board(reason for the LED still on...)

If you have a computer shop around you(or a spare power supply) get a spare, unhook the old one, hook up the new one and give it a try...if it is working you can keep the new power supply, if not bring it back to the store :)

Let me know

Cheers

I'll go with your suggestion Frank, I'll try to replace the power supply and see if that's the prob. Thanks. :)

Stay tuned...:D

I'm going to buy a new power supply in the weekend (I'll have some time then to get the exact one LOL :D). I've been able to find some people on the HP forum with the exact problem and guess what, Frank's right: I need a new power supply! :D

I think the problem happened when I plugged in the computer, and not while I was "operating" on it.

C'est la vie I guess...there goes more out of my savings.:D
