A yellowpage directory was delivered to me yesterday and I was browsing through the insurance category... I then see an ad for a new company with a really BS slogan. Basically they are lying. I notice they are advertising their url so I wanted to check it out to see what other BS there is...

To my suprise there was no website, then I did a quick whois and found out it was not even registered (and according to domaintools it has a clear history with no prior whois info)

Within 1 minute I register this domain. Within 10 minutes it's pointing torwards my new insurance directory I have been working on.

Yellow page ads usually must be submited months before they are published... I wonder if they just forgot to register a domain, or if the yellow page company published the wrong info (this happens)

Do you think I should contact the current company? What would I say?
Wait for them to contact me? (the new phone book just came out)

I was considering calling them and offering the domain to them for free if they advertise in my directory.

I would hold off and see what kind of traffic that listing sends, then if they contact you have a better gauge of what the domain is bringing in as far as traffic and sales, I wouldn't mention anything to them regarding you knowing about the listing, I would play that you have developed this as a business and to terminate your project the traffic and development both add into your resale price. I would sit tight on it for a few weeks at least to gauge it or wait for a possible offer, if they contact you then you can solicit your asking price or your trade for advertising on your site, if nothing comes in after a while then solicit them, patience is key, especially if looking for top dollar for domain names & websites, approaching them so quickly will show that you are eager to sell, could be a typo like you said, but I would still sit on it for a few weeks to see if anyone comes knocking for it.

A generic name, or something targetted to that specific company?
AKA: "QualityInsurance.com" or "JoeSmithFromTopekaKansasInsurance.com"?

If they spent money on yellow pages, they will not let it waste and will definatly contact you to get it.

I hope there are no TM issues, which is suspect will be :(
