I have noticed a huge trend right now that maybe I was the last to see it but.....
Google,Yahoo,BrightCove,YouTube, NarrowStep, Telcos,Cable Companies.....
All of these companies and types of companies are doing something amazing, they are basing their business models on marking up added value bandwidth. Google buys dark fiber supplies an ad platform, Brightcove gives away their platform usage to content producers but marks up the bandwidth and has an ad platform, telcos now provide iptv on a monthly charge to your phone bill, Cable provides telephone service. Bandwidth keeps getting a little cheaper but the telcos and cable companies cry that it is getting too crowded while Google finds unused fiber and buys it up. Craig McCaw sets up ClearWire and leases unused frequencies from schools and universities, builds an international company on marking up bandwidth.
Look, I know this is nothing new and I probably haven't paid much attention as i have always paid a flat monthly fee til recently for my domain hosting. But now companies are having you basically pay for bandwidth that they used to pay for. I think I am going to start examining companies for the next couple years from an investment point of view based on their ROB "Return on Bandwidth"!LOL!!
Cheers!
