Brightcove Network is going to stop accepting free accounts!!

Today I got an email from Brightcove:

We're sending you this email because you created or used at least one free Brightcove Network account during the last two years.

Regretfully, we've decided to discontinue the Brightcove Network (the free version of our service). The discontinuation of the free Brightcove Network accounts will not affect Brightcove platform accounts that customers have paid to use.

Please see the FAQ for complete details about this transition.

On December 17, 2008, we will be shutting down Brightcove Network accounts that have not been upgraded to paid Brightcove platform accounts. At the same time, we will be shutting down the Brightcove.TV website (which is separate from the corporate Brightcove website).

Until December 17, 2008, your Brightcove Network account will remain fully functional; the players that you have published will continue to operate; and you can keep using the Brightcove Console as you have been using it to date. At the same time, we are giving you a free trial of Brightcove 3.

Brightcove 3 is the newest version of the Brightcove online video platform. The new release has a completely re-designed user interface and a wide variety of powerful new features. You can learn more about Brightcove 3 on our site.

We've automatically upgraded your account to include a free trial of Brightcove 3 Basic. You can begin using the new features in Brightcove 3 today by logging in at studio3.brightcove.com. (Note: Your content will automatically appear in Brightcove 3, but you will need to make new Brightcove 3 players to take advantage of the full functionality.)

We specifically designed Brightcove 3 Basic to meet the needs of Network publishers. It's affordably priced and provides access to a wide range of third-party ad networks. If you are looking for more than what we offer with Brightcove Basic, we also have Pro and Enterprise editions.

Here's how you can make the transition:

* You can start using your Brightcove 3 trial today by signing-in with your existing username and password. All of your content will be accessible through both your current Network account as well as Brightcove 3. Sign in to Brightcove 3.
* If you'd like to continue to use Brightcove after December 17, you'll need to purchase Brightcove 3. The best way to do that is to submit a request for our sales team to contact you. Request contact from Brightcove Sales
* As one of our Network publishers, you qualify for this one-time, exclusive offer: Purchase Brightcove 3 by 6:00 p.m. ET on December, 16, 2008, and get up to three additional months for free.*
* If you'd like to download the content from your Brightcove Network account, we plan to provide a video download tool by December 1, 2008. We will notify you when this is ready.
* If you have any additional questions, they are most likely answered in the FAQ we've prepared. View the FAQ.

We have tremendous respect for the content and sites that Network publishers have produced, so the decision to discontinue the Brightcove Network was a difficult one.

Ultimately, we made the decision to focus all of our resources on the Brightcove platform business, which has proven to be very successful, with hundreds of active, paying customers worldwide.

We appreciate your support and participation in the Brightcove Network over the past two years. We hope that you will try Brightcove 3, and that we can continue to serve your online video needs.

Regards,
Adam Berrey
SVP of Marketing & Strategy

P.S. Please remember that if you decide not to upgrade to a Brightcove 3 platform account, all of the players you have published through your Brightcove Network account will stop serving video as of December 17, 2008.

Well managed companies moving from .TV over to .COM appears to be an increasing trend. Hopefully, Justin.tv, Ustream.tv, and Hollywood.tv don't follow suit or the $hit is going to hit the fan. IMO.

BrightCove has always been a .com company, they added the .tv for their free service, but just like VideoEgg these companies realize that they cannot continue to waste money on free bandwidth that they cannot monetize.

It's too expensive to consider. You can visit the site and contact the sales people, they will respond to your inquiry within 24 hours.

Good luck to you.

Big P,

Brightcove Basic costs $500/month. FYI, you might check out Endavo Media at www.endavomedia.com. Not nearly as much sticker shock and many more features than Brightcove Basic.
