Hello guys,

so i’m eyeing this domain, but the whois details are wild. need your brains to decode this mess.

the registrar is AboveDomains, and here’s what’s throwing me off:

  • statuses: clientTransferProhibited AND redemptionPeriod at the SAME TIME
  • expiry date: 2025-01-26 (over a year from now??)
  • updated date: 2025-03-11 (bro… that’s literally next year?!)
  • nameservers: their defaults (ns15.abovedomains.com / ns16.abovedomains.com)
like… if the domain’s paid thru jan 2025, why’s it stuck in redemptionPeriod? isn’t that for expired domains? and why’s the “updated” date in the future? feels like someone’s playing time traveler or the registrar’s doing sketchy stuff.

Questions:

  1. ever seen redemptionPeriod on a domain that’s not expired? is this a glitch or a scam?
  2. why would a registrar set the “updated” date to march 2025? icann allow this?
  3. is AboveDomains known for pulling stunts like this? should i avoid them?
  4. if i try to buy this domain, am i walking into a trap?
seriously, this feels like a episode of Black Mirror for domains. any advice? 🙏

tldr: registrar: AboveDomains. expiry 2025, but status = redemptionPeriod + clientTransferProhibited. updated date = future. ???

I'm sorry to inform you we already are in 2025.. time flies fast :D

Though it's possible for a domain to be sent to redemptionPeriod before it expires by manually having the registrar delete it (not the case here)

The domain you are eyeing will soon go in pendingDelete (around 2025-03-11 + 30 days), and then be free to be registered again (if not captured by a backordering service)

Do some very quick and detailed research on the expiry process at AboveDomains. You might get lucky and be able to get that one via an expiry auction BEFORE it fully expires. It sounds about right with the expiry date being at 2026-01-26 - I believe this typically happens by "default" when a domain is not renewed, the registrar extends it by one year BUT will get refunded for it if it's not renewed and dropped.

I just caught one exactly this way through SAV. Each registrar is different in the expiry timeline. Mine expired on 2025-01-21, went to a 10 day expiry auction 30 days later, and was won by me on 2025-03-02/03. Being now the 21st of March let's hope the process is a bit longer at AboveDomains, and hope you haven't missed it. Good luck and let us know how things go.

Afterthoughts: is there an expiry auction at AboveDomains at all? Did you miss it ie: regarding the redemptionperiod status?
