Hi,

I've tried to register names in the past from countries other than my home country and they always require me to fax in documents etc. It is not an easy process.

However recently I have begun purchasing names from others. When setting up accounts with various registrars to receive the push, I have yet to be asked for any kind of verification of my identity.

What would happen if one were to setup an account at a registrar and receive domain pushes using a fake name/address/phone number and a free web email account?

Would they lose the name if the registrar found out? Could they just transfer it out if they were asked to verify information? Do people ever do this to mask that they own the domain and/or avoid taxes or liabilities related to TM domains etc?

I'm not asking so I can do this, I'm more concerned others might be doing it and that I might run into trouble when buying names from fake accounts. Want to protect myself.

Thanks!

Keep in mind that fake whois is grounds for cancellation of the domain. So it's not recommended.
Also if the whois is faked you can't prove you own the names when and if challenged to do so...
As a buyer you should conduct due diligence when purchasing domains. If the whois is fake this is one possible red flag.
