NAF yesterday published statistics about the .xxx Rapid Evaluation Service, which ICM Registry created and NAF exclusively administers.

Fifteen RES complaints have been filed since December 6, 12 of which have been resolved so far. All of the cases were won by the complainant โ€” a trademark holder in 11 of the cases.

The RES was designed to handle clear-cut cases of cybersquatting and impersonation. It costs $1,300 to file a complaint and offers a super-fast alternative to the UDRP.

Interesting points:
Typos and sound-alike names are specifically mentioned as "confusingly similar."
There's no need to show the domain was registered for commercial gain
Generics are immune, AS LONG AS they're being used generically (not something you'd want to try though - there's still good ol' UDRP)
If you lose 3 or more RES cases in a year, it will count against you in a preliminary decision.

I don't like the lack of transparency, but it should nip a lot of abusive registrations in the bud. Cybersquatting on xxx is arguably more damaging than on other extensions, I don't blame people or companies for wanting to get those shut down asap.

I disagree.

Porn sites can be delivered under any extention. Dot xxx is really just a tool to shake down the corporate world. It appears to be working when you see reports such as this!

Of course they can, but the .xxx extension immediately brands whatever's associated with it as a porn site.

IMO, .xxx is just another pointless money grab where the registry has the most to gain.

Yes xxx is different.

I just think it shouldnt cost $1,300 to file with dot xxx. There should be an automatic loss for clear cut cybersquatting without an exchange of money. Provided its very clear cut

No matter the keywords, I'd associate anything on .xxx as porn. If I saw a developed kids.xxx there'd be no way in heaven or hell I'd visit it.

knowing you for a while now i can safely assume that you are not only monitoring dot xxx for porn!! lol

but you are right, nothing like that should slip through....responsibility of the registrar i would say...

Anything associated with .XXX is about milking money. There's a difference between 'making' money, and 'milking' money. I'm sure they can think of more clever schemes on how to boost revenues on their wallets.

It is an adult extension that can easily be blocked for minors. If you want to talk about milking money, talk about all of the adult .com sites..

Minors who are intelligent enough to get a Facebook account, will be able to figure out (quite easily) that you don't need to go to .XXX domains to get free porn on the internet.

The .XXX registry was simply launched to milk money from domainers looking for virgin TLDs to squat, and to milk money from TM holders wanting to sue cybersquatting domainers.

Still, .xxx protects minors from porn on the Internet. The same cannot be said for .com. Those who continue to use .com for adult content, when there is a safer alternative, are the ones who are "milking it". It is illegal & immoral to develop an adult site that allows minors to visit it freely.

I can guarantee you that there is, and has been, far more trademark cybersquatting on .com names than .xxx.

.xxx protects minors?
Hahahahaha....
Every kid above 3 years old knows .xxx is for porn!

How is .xxx protecting minors? Answer: It doesn't. Any kid can do a Google image or video search to find porn. Kids are still as likely to find free porn these days as they were before .xxx came out. Look at the .xxx registrations. The vast majority of owners are non-porn sies who wanted to assure no one regged their domain's terms/names as a .xxx & risked giving them a bad image. .xxx isn't helping ANYTHING, sorry to tell you. It's merely lining pockets.

Everyone knows that .xxx is an adult extension, therefore it is easier to control.

The Internet will not be the Wild West forever. The crackdown on porn will happen eventually, putting .xxx in a strong position for adult content providers.

The only real way .xxx will take off is if ppl are forced to use .xxx (opposed to, say, .com) for porn. That will never happen. So again, there is no good in .xxx & it's not helping anything whatsoever.

You only have to look at the history of adult services in the real world... There wont be .com hookers on every street in 10 years.

.XXX is the Red Light District.

There is no need for porn to be in the mainstream any longer.

Do you think they will ban porn sites in the .COM extension?

I think in 10 years, Playboy will still be operating mainly in their .COM domain. Not that pervs actually go to Playboy for their porn supply.

And besides, if you are in the business of porn, you don't need minors who cannot pay moolah. You need the pervs who have credit cards. So putting up an "Enter-or-Leave" frontpage that requires a credit card access, can solve the issue.

Who in his right mind would put up a FREE porn site on a .XXX that will milk your wallet with expensive annual domain renewal fees ?? A lot of casual free porn sites exist because .COM domains are relatively cheap (cheap enough that you can pay it off as a hobby).

But the .XXX "red light district" is for the serious porn business. Not really for teenagers with raging hormones. You want porn, you need to pay up. It's practically pointless in the "business sense" to be blocked along with the rest of the .XXX, when you are actually screening out the minors with your credit card landing page. If you are scared that credit card requirement will turn-off potential customers, i think those guys are just looking for FREE PORN anyway, so there's no business with these types of people. You have nothing to lose evenif you are on a .COM domain. Why pay for .XXX version ?????

What does porn being in the mainstream have to do with anything? There is no chance ALL adult websites will be forced to use .xxx & .com WILL STILL be the preferred extension, as it is now. Don't believe the foolish hype he media feeds you with. There ALREADY IS A RED-LIGHT DISTRICT and it's on EVERY commercially released extension. It'll always be that way. Live with it. You have no other choice.

Although it's considered nothing more than a vanity extension, this thread wasn't really for discussion of it, as a whole, but only that it was in the news. Thread's being closed. It served its purpose.
