... or maybe instead of placing the blame on outside factors it's time admit two key points:

1. 3D is a very fragile area of domaining. Decent sales are mostly dependent upon 3D hype within mainstream society, which has severely died down over the past few months. You never hear about 3D anymore. 3D speculators chose to ignore this possibility and instead believed that 3D was going to be all the rage going forward.

2. The initial run on 3D domains produced a handful of decent quick flips, but that model traditionally burns out fast and 3D was no exception.

So what we have left on the market are long term holders that bought their good domains years ago and the sellers from the "Great 3D rush of winter 2009" that can't sell anything because of the two reasons stated above.

OMG. If only we had listened to you earlier

Yes some have said as 3d TV becomes standard no one will think of it as 3d anymore. But that is just TVs and screens - there are also 3d objects and holograms to think of, but who knows if consumers will use the word 3d to talk about and buy that stuff.

I agree with you, but if/when 3D truly becomes the wave of the future there will be the transitional period where companies will be hopping on the 3D band wagon and rolling out, heavily promoting and competing for dominance in their niche for "3D [insert product/service here]".

For the most part, this will be the time period to make sure one clears out their 3D dn inventory -- before the excitement peaks and 3D becomes the standard.

There is a lot of money in the 3D market. This could pay more than half of my rent :)
That is a premium 3D domain that was registered in 2004. You are encouraged by its $895 sale?

This, to me, is a disaster.

The percentage of salable 3D domains to these companies is so tiny that very few domainers will do well. Until then, trash will be renewed awaiting the mythical "3D transitional period" where every company wants a 3D domain.

This certainly wont happen and I hope most people on here dont think so either, or they will be very disappointed.

I still believe it will become a lot more popular but I think maybe 2013/2014 will be the time and not before that. There are quite a few technical hurdles to overcome first, not to mention the prices of these 3D products will need to drop before being embraced by the general public.

Appreciate your comments though

Once again I find I'm in agreement with you, this time on the "percentage" aspect as well as the issue of renewal of trash 3D dn's. As with any hyped dn niche here at NP (remember "Blook" dn's???), I just cringe at many (most???) of the names I see registered and posted here.

I think most 3D domain owners here (aka speculators) really need to take a VERY, VERY critical look at their 3D portfolio and drop anything that isn't premium.

And when referring to "premium", I'm talking about domains that contain words that are truly relevant and appropriate for use with 3D, NOT things like 3DOmitted.com, 3DShelving, 3DTableSaw.com, etc. (Though that last one could make for a pretty gnarly flash game site on a 3D monitor...)

By the way, since I didn't want to risk offending anyone with my examples above, I checked whois on each example I came up with -- but it still took me several minutes to find some that hadn't actually been regged. There REALLY are A LOT of poor (IMHO) 3D dn's regged out there...

Personal disclosure, I do have a vested interest in the overall success of 3D products as I have relative handful of 3D's in a 2 specific niches -- including at least 4-5 dogs that I bought in a moment of buying frenzy (a result of my usual buying overkill personality and not related to the overall 3D hype).

hey everybody

... just had a $4,000 offer for
3d|Test|Drive.com

:)

nice starting point, but nothing to be too excited about just yet as i am turning this down... counter will be minimum $xx,xxx

thinking $20k - TOO much versatility - agreed?
higher? - Lower?

your thoughts?

Congrats and good luck with negotiations.

your thoughts?

Sell it sooner rather than later if you believe that eventually 3d will become so widespread that no one refers to it as 3d any more, just assumes it. There are alternatives to this name so it is not a category killer.

thanks carob

i think that a '3d test drive' has the power to outlast the 'trend' of 3d and be a very successful standalone.

only real alternative i can think of is maybe 'Virtual TestDrive' (?)

i also don't think that $xx,xxx is category killer money but i do think there is more to be made from this name.

thanks again carob

I watched the news last night about a study for teens
and texting.
They were using a simulator and texting while pretend
driving...quite interesting stats.
Not sure if it was in 3D but this name would suit it to a tee
if it was!

Good Luck with the Sale :)

End user contact or unsolicited offer? Is this the initial offer or have you pushed them here?

Your prime end user market for this is very small. Even if it can get $20k in a best case scenario, it's unlikely to manifest.

If you are seriously in the red, you may not want to test their limits. I'm not saying don't counter, but the $20k goal is a big risk on your part. Even the current offer of $4,000 will cover about 500 renewals.

the offer is good and well worth accepting, a sale would justify your faith in 3d and offer some form of return in case we are actually at the peak, you have plenty of other names put away for the future ......take the offer now

good luck with it John
