It would be nice to have dot numbers for example .1 or .12 as domain extension instead of .mobi. What do you think?

I dont know if I like that idea. The .mobi ext. is directly related to the mobile web, it is easy to remember and makes sense. Numbers are kind of random.

Not a good precedent to set (Using #'s), :imho:
Also, in the western world, they aren't very important (Except maybe 7 and 13) - but I remember hearing recently how much more meaning (And even substituted for letters sometimes?) they can take on in the Asian region (China was the specific example, if I remember correctly.).

1.1

Ha! :]

It's a crazy idea, but you must admit that would be a pretty cool web address to own.

I have always thought why not .m instead of .mobi as the dedicated mobile TLD. It is 1 letter and only 1 keystroke plus is a common abbreviation for mobile. With .m there would be no need of a so called .mobi default key. I guess they have some "branding" idea with the term "mobi".

.m could really stand for anything. .mobi on the other hand is recognizable and easy to remember. I think they hit the nail on the head with this one. Hopefully they hurry up and start promoting this thing so we can realize its potential.

If you seen an ad for www.keyword.m and you didnt know about the mobile web, you would be confused. If you seen an ad for keyword.mobi, you can put 2 and 2 together. But who knows?

Hi keithmt,

If we get the so called default "mobi key" then of course we have mobi gold. Otherwise in my opinion, I think a revolutionary 1 letter TLD would have been better. However ICANN might have some rule against any 1 letter TLDs.

It's tricky. It can be assumed that .org sites are organizations but there are many .org's that are used for commercial endeavors. .m would be even worse because there are thousands of words that start with an M thus it would be far too hard trying to market .m as a mobile-only ext. car.m could be for "car motors" and "mobile car phones" both just as sex.m could be for "mobile sex" & "male sex" both. .mobi clearly has intentions. I'd never visit www.rock.mobi & expect to see "male sex" or "car motors."

Letters typically have meaning while numbers are more of a "group of characters." I think number exts might be fun but still otherwise confusing. It might only be me but I'd better remember health.org than health.6 or health.32.

It's fun to discuss idealized TLDs.

Overall IMHO we only need one system of TLDs for the internet. The Country Code System is the most logical and should have been the only allowed first level domain. Then each country can create custom second levels to suit it's needs such as "gov", "edu", "com", "mobile", "ect". The end user could have their domain at the third level or second if allowed. I think things were happening somewhat in this fasion at one point. For the United States our mobile domain should be "whatever.m.us". Please do be too harsh on myself for this opinion but I think it's the logical addressing system. Mathmatic like logic should be used at the first level and branding kept to the second or third level. So under my ideal system .com is king no more but would .com.us be king? LOL

Back to the .m vs .mobi, yes dot mobi is far more brandable but hell to type. "m" and "o" are on the same key which will often make a typo. A default mobi key will be our only hope IMHO because most devices will not likely be qwerty any time soon. I am a mobi owner and developer but admit it sucks to type .mobi on any non qwerty keypad and .com suck almost as bad too! I just want to type ".m" and go to a mobile site without all the branding.

They do. And the rule is not negotiable. It has been tested!
