Agreed here.
Also, for the record, I have no financial or administrative interest in Gab, neither directly or indirectly, and I doubt I ever will. I took the controversial decision to be their registrar when Godaddy fired them.
I was briefly active at Gab as a user after major media outlets went after me for that decision. Once the Founder of Gab added capable counsel, I have had essentially zero contact with him.
As for the user count topic, this is a constant theme. Gab's latest project Dissenter.com is growing like a weed as well and once again, we have the user count nonsense.

This time the reason why the user count issue came up is because the CEO of the Brave browser missed the opportunity to help Gab, and now ends up with seeding a viable competitor.
As for Gab's content, there is still cringeworthy content there. No question. Gab continues to exist because Facebook and Twitter went too far with their heavy-handed biased censorship.
And while I am not a stakeholder in Gab, I do believe Gab is doing a lot with a little, and I would certainly not suggest that anyone should bet against them. They are nimble, resourceful and resilient.
