Anyhow...

When it comes to building a brand, a site, or any kind of online business, in my opinion, ".com's" are the best domain tld's to get. The reasoning behind this is because of many factors, including, but not limited to:
#1.- Everyone is familiar with .com's
#2.- They are well-known, and more people search .com's more than any other tld.
#3.- They have been around since the internet came out, and they are most popular.
#4.- They are less confusing for people,

And probably many more reasons. Basically to sum it all up, they are the most common, and people know them, and understand them without confusion.
As with other Tld's in the domaining industry, and other business industries, it can, in fact, get confusing.
For example, I once read an article on how a business owner would say: My site is "Harod.Consulting", then the customer immediately mistook it, and got confused, saying, "So it's Harod.Consulting.Com?" (I don't remember the exact name, but just using this as an example) However, the customer couldn't wrap his mind around the new gtld extension, without the dot com in place.
This is just one example, and I realize that not everyone is this way, but it can be confusing to some. Therefore, only pointing out even more why ".com's" are the best.
Personally I have owned a ".net" site for almost 8 years, but I have always had to advertise as "Dot Net" in the title, because I know people will automatically try to find my business name under ".com".
I even knew this before even thinking of ever getting into domaining.
I'm not saying all gtld's are bad, and I'm not saying that even ".net" or ".org" is bad. However, in my opinion, I will probably always stick with the ".com's" from here on out, just for the sole purpose that I believe in them.
Another reason, I think ".com's" are better, and this is only my opinion, is because I think they are much more search engine friendly. Therefore, making it easier to do SEO, as well as other marketing methods.

In my opinion, .com is the best tld because of 3 main reasons:
1. It's one of the first tlds available with .edu, .gov, .mil, .net, .org, and .arpa
2. It's the best tld for people who want to do online business compare to other old tlds in the list above. It means "commercial", or "community", or "company", .. When I first saw google.com, I thought "Oh this company's name is Google"
3. And it gains benefit from "the first best things available". People used to use it. Right now if regular people see .co domains, they will ask "Is it typo? Are you missing an m?"

I don't think there will be any tld can pass it in next 20 years, because of 3 reasons above. It's just like the Dvorak keyboard vs Qwerty keyboard. Even Dvorak is better, people will still use Qwerty keyboard, because most people used to use it.
