sales Mike Mann Sells a Three Word .COM for $40,000

Spaceship Spaceship
One of our favorite investors, Mike Mann, has racked up yet another five-figure sale. Following on from the sales of AnimalsUnited.com for $39,000 and GotBoobs.com for $15,000 is this latest $40,000 sale of a three-word .COM.

The news of the sale was broken by Mike via his Twitter account, where he also shared his acquisition date and price.

According to the tweet, Mike bought the domain name TheGoodWord.com back in 2005 for $350, and after holding it for 11 years, he has sold it for a phenomenal profit.

Turning a $350 acquisition into a $40,000 sale isn't an easy feat, especially for a three-word .COM domain, but Mike seems to be able to produce these sales on a regular basis. As he owns a portfolio of 250,000 names, selling high is a prerequisite for maintaining a large portfolio.

As ever with Mike's sales, the buyer is yet to be revealed. There are no immediate clues as to who the buyer is.

Thats a heck of a long time to wait for that sale but some amazing profit on that individual acquisition. Even with holding it for 11 years he's only in it for less that $500 bucks. If you take that $350 he paid initially and get a great return of say10% annually from some investment portfolio and reinvest that annual return back in it doesn't come anywhere close to the return he got. Still amazing that someone paid $40k for that name though.

An inexperienced domainer wouldn't even give such price to a buyer. Mike rocks!

He's the Mann, The Mann with a plan:) ..I'm reminded of the days he was having marital issues and he put up a site with his wife's name and his personal life was the talk of the blogs. I remember an article domaingang did as a parody of it and I as well as others snapped at him on his blog in defense of mike, till he explained it was a parody:) Since then I always look for the 100% True reference. The domaining community has many wonderful people that are empathetic and truly care about helping others in the industry to a great extent, excluding some of course who's main objective is to make money at any costs. Anyways Sorry for rambling...as for the sale when it comes to higher priced domains imo it's a bigger factor finding the right buyer than the selling price itself.

I dont know if mike mann owns his names or brokers them. When you are not paying renewals its easy to stay high priced, eventually someone will buy ,there is a lot of money floating around out there, For a company to pay 10,20 30 100,000k for a domain name is basically chump change to them. I was an headhunter for high level traders and salesman , and these companies pay an average of 50k just to hire people.250,000 domains is a minimum 2 million a year in renewals. So he would have to sell 50 each year about 1 a week for 40k just to cover that nut. All that being said ,he probably does not own all of them. There are many ''domain name sales companies'' ,{I think you know who Im talking about} that ask upwards of 20k for regular domains that anyone of us can find similar domains in 20 min. The reason why these companies stay so high is that they do not pay renewals ,their customers do .So if they sell a domain for 20k their making 1/3 for doing nothing .They dont even do outbound sales. My advice to anyone old or new in this business buy only'' PANIC DOMAINS''.
I call them panic domains because when you see them open for reg. you get a panic attack ,Sense of urgency to buy that domain right now ,your heart is pounding and your sweating up a storm ,this is about the same time that your computer ends up freezing . Anyway when you finally get this domain {if you dident spell it wrong -LOL . "''''''''''''THIS IS THE DOMAIN THAT YOUR GONNA SELL"""""""""" for a few grand eventually. So a highly published high priced sale would impress me if a person owned a few hundred domains not a quarter million. STAY SMALL ,BUY SMART , you will enjoy your life more and actually make money.

I've always thought about this when seeing such big sales. and as a newbie I've always wondered if perhaps a "selling technique" for such domains is the HYPE of the seller ie. Mike Mann the King!

I think Mike has created a following for himself online so much so that just by him simply offering you a domain to purchase. You as a buyer must feel a bit like in the presense of Elvis or Frank Sinatra.

Even if you don't know Mike. a simple Google search will give you the "gist" about him.

so I think merely on online "clout" alone sells his domains.

I mean cmon I'm sure many of us on here believe we have better domains than this 3 letter domain. yet ours will never sell for this much. even if they were 4L.com's and single dictionary words.

So here's what I think happens.

I've always thought that when you "pitch" to a potential buyer and tell them you want $40,000 for a domain. and a 3 letter domain at that! That I think the "big boys" of domaining mention this:

When a domain sells for Big Bucks?
It will be TALKED ABOUT in all the news outlets for domaining online.

in fact the domain will be mentioned in all the best high ranking sites online. This is CONTENT for these sites. Content like this gets their readers to keep visting their sites.

In effect. the domains rank and popularity gets a boost.

so it's almost like paying $40,000 for advertising or the domain while thee other one is just the Cherry on top.

It's like paying $40G's for a domain and getting Free advertising that increases the value of the domain.
Or paying $40G's to advertise your website on all the top rank websites online and getting a domain for free.

I liken this scenario to when Reality Stars or Rappers or Celebrities (people who SHOULDN'T be famous or Popular i.e. NO TALENT)buy multi-million dollar homes and cars and live lavish lifestyles ( most of which is lease and rentals only)

Their PR people tell them to do this because it gets the Magazines and news sites and national enquirer types talking.

(this is why you end up seeing stars on skid row...depending if they had good financial advisors.because they are told to spend spend spend so the news site will gossip about them)

As they say in the biz. if No One is talking about you. Then you won't be worth crap.

So I think Mike Mann and all thee other guru's use this template to get themselves notoriety or fame. Even if it's a bad negative story. It's still free publicity.

So when they mention their other domains they literally piggy back off their past news of past domain sales.

It's pretty ingenious actually. Love it!

so next time you get a bite on one of your domains. why not tell them

"Did you know if you buy this domain for your company for $50,000 that it will get picked up in all the domaining news sites? and people will talk about it and mention it in all the top rank forums and blogs and news outlets?? This domain is already awesome as is. but the cherry on top is if you buy it for $50,000 it's like paying $50,000 for free advertising. and I guarantee all the SEO Ranking analysis software out there will value your domain more than what you paid for INSTANTANEOUSLY! In fact??? I'll even pay for a PR Release mentioning the sale of this domain for $50G's to guarantee this. So do we have a deal?"

ROCKSTAR!

LOL

sorry for rambling. I've thought about this obviously too much.

Does anyone believe this is going on behind the scenes? because the gurus won't spill their trade secrets like this one perhaps?

Everyone always says. "How the hell did he sell THAT domain for THAT Price?" and then think "What am I doing wrong?"

And then they say " I could never (with a straight face) ask for $XX,XXX for any of my domains.

Has anyone ever thought that the reason why Mike can confidently ASK for that much is because he has already scripted his sales pitch?

Mike is literally selling himself not his domains. His Name attached to each of his domains ads value to his domains. a piece of paper is worthless until Frank Sinatra signs it.

I mean think about it. if given the scenario above. What potential buyer wouldn't buy his domains?

"Say what? so you are telling me Mike? That if I buy this domain for $50,000 in a few weeks it will be worth 10%-50% or even 100% more because of the free publicity? Sign me up! and where do I send my check?"

lol

in a way it's kinda like the stock market pump and dumps where a bunch of investors make a plan to buy a stock to show it's increase in value which in turn gets people to buy more stock. Therefore the Value is created out of thin air. The company's value is not from sales of products or services but totally from stock investors. Value is created by publicity.

I do think that after a sale. Mike does follow thru and gets a domain he sells all the publicity in the world thereby creating happy customers.

I hope people don't think I'm crazy babbling. doesn't anyone agree with me? man I hope I'm not the only one.

Great Sale Mike! Best of luck!

9 out of 10 times a company that would pay 50k or 500k dont even want it out there that they bought the domain. Companies that spend big money on domain names ,dont want it out there that they had the buy their Brand, and the publicity that the domain would bring would not help the company in any way,no one cares that someone paid 40k for a domain name ,to the mainstream public ,thats like saying someone won a 50k lotto prize.

Publicity has nothing to do with it. You can ask for a lot and most if the time the buyer won't go for it but sometimes they do and the odds are better when you have a quality big portfolio.

Amazing sale no doubt.

Keep in mind he has a unique or different business model than most posting on namepros. His overhead is probably in the millions when you include renewals (10s of thousands of domains), cost of labor, and marketing/misc business costs for DomainMarket. Relatively good domains with a shotgun approach....and he waits for end user prices (even it that takes 10 years). He has the the capacity and wants to wait for these price. He probably needs a few of these a year to cover his costs alone.

Just food for thought.

I see what you are saying about companies buying domains that their business will "sit" on basically. of course they wouldn't want to post how much they paid.

for example the sale of IOE.com by Cisco. real ninja stuff.

ok wait a minute. aren't there domains that sold. for millions where yes the buyer was kept private? yet does it change the fact that the huge price tag will be tag will be talked about in the forums and the news channels for weeks months and years to come?

are you saying that simply because the buyer wants to remain anonymous that the domain won't get the publicity anyway and get GOLD backlinks in all the high ranking websites? I know you know this is not the case. Quite thee opposite.

IN FACT. Let's put it to a VOTE. Who here would not be even MORE INTRIGUED about a domain especially if the buyer wants to remain ANONYMOUS? Again there is NO SUCH THING as BAD PUBLICITY.

Anonymous BUYER?

You'll have people talking about this FOREVER. people will even play a sort of GAME of trying to figure out who the buyer might be.

I've seen it happen plenty of times in the short span of time I've been on NP.

Anonymous Domain Buyer = Intrigue + Gossip + Conspiracy Theories (LOL) etc etc = FREE PUBLICITY

Jealous domainers or fans of Mike or other gurus who hero worship ( like I do) will VOLUNTEER to chatter about the sale of BLAHBLAHBLAH.COM.

I really so no DOWNSIDE for the domain buyer.

YES TRUE. A good domain is good domain. It sounds good. It's aged Good. Great metrics. yadda yadda yadda.

but most domain buyers DON'T GET IT like WE DO who live and breathe this stuff.

Domain buyers are SIMPLE MINDED.

"I give you $40G's? and I can double and triple it's value in a couple of weeks?"

"Where do I sign and send the check?"

All makes sense in every way you put it. Most likely.

I wonder the cost of his operations compare to $40K sales in one domain.

Anyone tracking all past sales and the new owner? Just curious.

Yes AGREED. But at some point in the beginning Mike was ONE OF US. just barely keeping afloat with this itchy "hobby" of ours. I think his big sales had to have been made using the technique I mentioned. perfected over time.
