Domain Empire

domains Five Famous Faces Who Don't Own Their .COM - Part 3

Spaceship Spaceship
In the third part of my series of famous faces who don't own their own .COM domain, I'll explore five more celebrities including two actors, a politician, a TV show host and a businessman. It's always interesting to see how some of the world's successful people are overlooking vital online assets.

Daniel Craig - DanielCraig.com
We start off with one of this year's most anticipated movies: Spectre. This is the 24th James Bond movie that had its world wide premiere in London on Monday night. With a budget of $250 million, the latest Bond installment has received a lot of praise, and it has no doubt caused a spike in traffic to its official website: 007.com. A very valuable domain name.

However, James Bond himself doesn't own his .COM name. Daniel Craig was cast as James Bond almost exactly ten years ago, and he has built up a net worth of $95 million thanks to his role as Mr. Bond, as well as his other highly acclaimed roles including playing Mickael in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

DanielCraig.com isn't owned by Mr. Craig or his management company. Instead, it's owned by Daniel Craig of Seoul, South Korea. According to the website currently live on DanielCraig.com, this Daniel is a professor at Sangmyung University.

I'm sure that this week will see a large increase in the traffic to that domain name.

Bill Clinton - BillClinton.com
As the former President and husband of current presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, Bill has a very high profile life. His Facebook page has 3.3 million Likes and his Twitter account has 4.37 million followers, 250,000 of which followed him within 24 hours of him creating the account in 2013.

I'm very surprised to see BillClinton.com redirecting to a parked page. BarackObama.com naturally hosts Mr. President's website, GeorgeBush.com redirects to GOP.com, and GeorgeWBush.com hosts Mr. Bush's own official site.

HillaryClinton.com is of course owned by "Hillary for America" - her presidential campaign. However, BillClinton.com redirects to a Sedo parked page, and as such, Sedo lists a few statistics about the domain. Within the last 30 days it's had 202 visits and five offers to buy the name.

As the presidential elections draw closer in the USA, I'm wondering whether BillClinton.com may be acquired by the Republican Party as a marketing ploy against Hillary. I'm sure that it would make national headlines to see BillClinton.com redirecting to DonaldJTrump.com.

As of writing, it looks like the domain is owned by an employee of an automated dispenser company.

Jimmy Fallon - JimmyFallon.com
If you visit JimmyFallon.com, you may be mistaken for thinking that the domain is actually owned and operated by the TV star. However, at the bottom of the page is a little message stating "This site is not operated by Jimmy Fallon".

This point is confirmed by Jimmy in a hilarious interview with Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons. As Jimmy tells the audience to visit JimParsons.com, Jim interrupts saying "Don't go on JimParsons.com, I don't know what that is. I don't own that."

Afterwards, Jim Parsons threatens to buy JimmyFallon.com and "fill it with porn." Thanks to @Eric Lyon for finding this great interview:

(scroll to 2:04 if it doesn't pre-load to that point)

Ashton Kutcher - AshtonKutcher.com
Ashton is an American actor and investor, famous for The 70s Show, The Butterfly Effect and more recently for portraying Steve Jobs in "Jobs" and appearing on Shark Tank. He was also the first person to reach 1 million followers on Twitter in 2009.

His investment company has backed 27 different companies, including the award winning sleep startup Casper (who acquired Casper.com not too long ago). He's also invested in AirBnB, Spotify, and Foursquare.

Whilst Ashton invests a lot of time and money into the tech world, it seems that domain names aren't of interest to him. AshtonKutcher.com currently redirects to a DomainNameSales.com parked page, displaying adverts for "Ashton Kutcher Photos", "Ashton Kutcher Posters" and more. It is currently owned under privacy at Uniregistry.

I must admit I'm a little curious as to why Ashton hasn't acquired the domain already, as he is a very active Internet entrepreneur and investor.

Steve Jobs - SteveJobs.com
Finally, we are at number five. The late Steve Jobs, the co-founder and CEO of Apple Inc. Before Steve died in 2011, he was responsible for the release of such devices as the iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac, iTunes, and the App Store.

Typically, Apple haven't been too interested in acquiring domain names for their products. Five and a half years after its initial launch, Apple still don't own iPad.com. Although they do own iPhone.com, Mac.com, iTunes.com, iMac.com, and AppStore.com. (Here's an interesting article from DotSauce on how Steve Jobs got AppStore.com for free.)

Whilst Apple owns StevenJobs.com and even SteveJobs.xxx, they don't own SteveJobs.com. This is owned by an individual in Daegu, South Korea. It hosts a basic blog that seems to be fairly active. Given Apple's previous Steve Jobs related acquisitions, I'm sure they have attempted to buy SteveJobs.com in the past but obviously with no luck.

Answer: Because he doesn't need it.

@DU Surely as a high profile actor & investor you'd spend a little money acquiring your own name? I realise social media may take precedence for him but domains still have their uses - even if it's to protect his brand.

Interesting post. Thanks.
All I would say is that, When your Work Speaks so Loud, you can make any name as your official digital space, I dont think Daniel Craig would even be bothered about any dot com with his name. :)

He is his brand. His name is just his name.
He uses Twitter and Facebook. What's he going to do with his <name>.com?
Millionaire celebrities don't live like normal people :)

Just the type-in traffic alone would be enough reason, IMO.
He has 17.2m Twitter followers - I'm not thinking that direct type-ins have much impact.

Maybe not, but it's hard to navigate through a social feed. Websites aren't just business cards, they're an extension of your brand. Eventually social media, mobile apps, and websites will merge into one. Until then, it is best to cover your bases.

Maybe Daniel Craig should just get DANIELCRAIG.ACTOR. No big deal.

Ohhh, i forgot. The .ACTOR tld is not restricted. So anyone who is not even an actor, or whose name is not Daniel Craig, can cybersquat on that too.

Whoever thought of coming up with a .ACTOR tld is a genius in milking money from celebrities.
