information Exclusive Interview with a $20 Million Dollar Domain Investment Fund

Spaceship Spaceship
Last week, 19 year old Erwan Kina (@ErwanKina) made an announcement that his investment group will be acquiring over $20 million worth of domain names in 2016, with their focus being on buying short .COM domains. Why are they putting so much money into domain names this year? Who are these investors? What plans does the group have for their acquisitions?

We find out the answers to these questions and much more in this exclusive first interview with Erwan in which he reveals that his group has already bought over $2.5 million worth of domain names in 2016.

NP: Can you tell us about yourself and how you came to be involved in domain names?

Erwan: I’m French, and I’ll be 20 years old next month. In January 2015, I was really not happy in my law school in Lyon, France. I was motivated not to spend the next 7-8 years of my life working on something I didn’t like to have a degree I didn’t want. I’ve decided to stop my studies in order to start a new entrepreneurial project. I was able to do so because I made some money a year before by hosting parties in the best night clubs of my city while I was still in high school. I knew I had about 6 months before I had to start making a living with my new project.

I’ve had the great idea to Google "how to make money online" and on the bottom of a list I read was "Sell websites and domain names." That’s how I discovered the top 100 reported sales of all time, and I was fascinated. My dream was always to negotiate these kinds of deals. So I told myself, "this business is for me; don’t quit until you are number 1." At that time, I had the choice between becoming a football (soccer) player agent, like Jorge Mendes, or a domain expert. I chose domaining because we don’t need any licenses to start.

I have to thank Ali Zandi (@Zandibot) too. I saw this guy made himself six figures in six months after discovering the domain name industry. From that point, I knew I had no excuses. Hard work, hard work, hard work, and a lot of perseverance.

Today I’m blessed to work full-time with my great partners. I’m learning so much with them. We have already made great deals. We will keep winning every day!

NP: We noticed that you now have a $20 million fund to buy domain names. Is this from one investor or several?

Erwan: Honestly we believe we will acquire more than $20M of domains in 2016; this is just the start. It’s the amount we are sure at 100% we will at least invest.

One of my partners, Sharjil Saleem built a worldwide network of really big players over the years with G. Chang. He’s from Dubai, and other partners are from China, UAE, and Germany. We will meet to discuss our next goals several times during the year. Our next meeting is scheduled in February in Dubai. All the investors are domain experts.

I’m in charge of finding the best opportunities and closing deals. I will also broker our best domains very soon. Sharjil was my best client a few months ago. We made awesome deals. He then offered me the opportunity to cooperate more seriously with the network he had built. In any business, you have to find a guy who can help you improve yourself every day. The right mentor shows you how to perform and you can win big from it. In return, you have to invest yourself at 100% for the success of your group.

(Editor's note: The credibility of Sharjil Saleem has been called into question and caution may be warranted.)

NP: What type of domain names are you currently acquiring?

Erwan: Only .com and a few types of .net (very short .net). In .com, we invest in short domains, LL to LLL, and some 4-Letter Chips too.

The new goal is to acquire about 20 3-Letter .com domains at fair prices. We are also still buying some 4-Letter .com Chips. We will acquire some 4-Letter .net Chips, too. This year we’d also like to have more LL.com domains in our portfolio. Very soon, we will put one of ours for sale.

NP: Can you reveal any of your recent acquisitions and their prices?

Erwan: We never report our acquisitions, but I will keep NamePros informed when we put our best domains up for sale. So you will have an idea of our portfolio. For January, we're focused on acquiring huge names. In February, we will start making money.

In 2016, we have already invested more than $2.5M.

NP: Do you plan on holding these domain names, or will they be resold quickly?

Erwan: Some are meant to be kept a while, while others we are motivated to close deals in the short term.

We have no problem waiting for the right offer for our domains. We will never sell in a rush. We prioritize end-users, but we have no problem selling to a domain investor if we think we can make a good deal.

We see and appraise a lot of domains every day and if the price is more than fair, we will buy. We don’t necessarily have a time schedule for each domain, but we are confident they will sell sooner or later for a profit.

NP: What percentage of the domains that you'll buy with the $20 million do you expect to sell to end-users vs other investors?

Erwan: We first and foremost focus on potential end-users. If we have no active leads, then we are happy to deal with an investor as long as we make some money.

NP: Do you expect to make a profit on every domain you purchase or do you expect a few big sales to make up for the majority that may not sell for a profit?

Erwan: I always invest to win. "A penny saved is a penny saved." I take our investments very seriously. I want to be one of the leaders of this business for the next 5 years. To do so, I have to take calculated risks and make great investments for the guys who trust me. To sell, you need to believe in what you offer, so you need to believe in what you acquire in the first place.

Our strategy is to win on every decision we make.

Erwan: Thanks for the interview. For anyone interested, I can be reached on NamePros and LinkedIn.

Thanks to Erwan for taking the time to speak to us. It sounds like it's going to be a very big year for him and his group of investors in terms of both their acquisitions and sales, so expect to see domain sales from this investment group being revealed in the near future.

Really sorry to say this Eric ... but all this BLA, BLA BLA of @ErwanKina and whoever is @SharjilSaleem doesn´t give any TRUST to this story ... just a friend confirming the involvement of the outher ...
Sharji guy was the one who sold shelly.com, and fantasize.com on namepros, then bailed in escrow when the real owners did not like the closing prices, what an absolute mess, is this the source of the $20M fund.

what is the big deal, if you have a marker amex card, unlimited limit, I can buy as many domains as I want, whats the point?

This article, and dollar amounts really equate to nothing, but hype. Like we don't see enough of that online.

I think the word "hate" is misguided and ignorant to use. Domainers are excited and inspired to hear stories like this. The resistance is not about his success but simply because the story wasn't detailed. There were no useful info to help other domainers, no footsteps to follow in. Here is a story where the right questions are asked and no gaps left: http://www.domainsherpa.com/ali-zandi-flippa-interview/

Hate used in the same context as Haters

How can you dislike that comment? That's hating.

@BrandClub.com
Dear Marian,
While you were disliking my peaceful comment to @rivey001, I was closing a $97,500 deal.
Please kindly understand I don't really care whether you trust this story or not.
The people I deal with everyday know how ethical and professional I am, and you will realize it soon. My investors, partners, sellers, buyers... I love them, I'm blessed I'm connected with them, I'm loyal to them, we make great deals.
"BLA BLA BLA" like you say, it's not really my thing.
As I don't see what I can gain from investing my time answering to your disrespectful comments, I will now ignore any further reply from you. Please don't feel insulted, I have to prioritize my activities. You're dead to me.

Was that a $97,500 or a $97 deal ???

OK, watching this thread from thr beginning and now couldnt resist to comment.

I must make comparison with Ali as they both showed up out of nowhere. Ali started with kc something, and now is zandibot. He is extremelly intelligent guy with extremellyyyy huge energy and determination. I really like his success as he started with pure brain and determination.
Erwan got connections, but totally wrong approach. Who do you want to impress? You are backed with $20M? Great! Be quiet and try to make best deals without revealing your budget.

Each million entering our industry is highly appreciated, but newbies, no matter how many millions you are planning to invest, please let us to notice that without PR anouncements. Believe me, we will notice. We will also open threads about big sales, we will discass that, we will make it natural!

cmon guys lets stop arguing like kids over meaningless stuff. Who cares if someone has 20 million or $20 to invest. At the end of the day noone cares tbh. everyone has their own life to worry about. no reason to get jealous over stuff like this .... Lets move on with our lives and leave the negative comments out.

I would also like to add that I am happy for every new million entering our industry. But I also must say say that this whole interview was one of the lowest quality. Sorry James, you are doing a great work, but not this time, sorry. Rather make another interview with Ali. I really amire his intelligence and determination. I do know excatly what he did to achieve this. I remember irritant kc simething showing everywhere, but he had the attitude and determination and after only one year he dont need to be iirritant anymore with his promotion as he became interesting now. Ali, say if I am wrong, but I believe you started about a year or two ago with les than $1k and now you are owning lll.coms.
Erwan, connect with with Ali and back him wih $20 million, you will have $5M in less than a year, and he and your investor will make even more.

I am now in the mood which @HireDomains often mentions so sorry for mistakes in writing

To conclude, dont make announcments like we will invest $20M+ this year, especially with your domaing CV. (sorry). Announce when you sell something for millions and then present yourself like you did ib this interview.
Give any of intelligent domainer $20M and they will make $40M by the end of year. Give any intelligent and experienced domainer $20M and he will make $100M+ vy the end of year.

I am obviously not in a mood to write properly and am not sure if I expressed myself properly. However, I like domaining so much that I even visit NP when I suppose to have fun:) I might feel emberassed tomorrow, but I dont care (now) :)

I am in a club, a weired one as most normal clubs close about an hour or two ago here. However, I am having a great time. Anyway, I couldnt help myself to avoid NP today. I dont do FB and similar time wasting, but NP is something special. I adore domaining. Domains bringingig bread to my table, domains allowing me to live like I want without any pressure to work for someone eltilDomains are something what sometimes put me in trans like nothing else. When I search for potential buyer of my domain, when I noticed the title of his website indentical to my .com domain name, when I check w. isology for him and notice many similar domains, and when after that when I notice similar sale on Namebio which send me to his contact, uhhh, I like that! He is my first class potential buyer. If I paid that domain lesd than $1k (mostly I did), then I already made a profit for that feeling. When Ifind another one I am thrilled. And I rarely take domains without checking and making sure there are dozens of that quality potential end users. So when extracting contacts I already experience the feeling which is worth more than mid $xxx what is my usual end user price.
I might be hijacking this thread (will stop), but want that some still undecided people understand how we like our job.

And one suggestion to Erwan and all domain buyers. Hold your best (and most valuable domains) under some email addresses which could not be connected to you. Why? If you contact me to purchase some keyword domain (chips have floor so are excluded) and I notice you own some very valuable dimain you will get higher price than you would get if I notice you own average domains. The same is if I will be offering you some domains which fit to your business.
Online anonimity could be very important. We all are very easy traceble, but my suggestion is to hide your best assets.

Erwan, I hope you will contact sellers as someone else who is not aware you are founded with $20M. When buying chips you should post fixed price below floor price and be patient for fire sellers with reputation. Why with reputation? Because scammers will block your money as you will get it back, but after some time, and if deal is to good to be true you need seller with reputation.

In my opinion, buyer & seller both should have decent reputation..

I think your having too much fun! Clubs are loud!! I used to like them; in my early 30's. Now it's kind of not me anymore.

Never too much. I am not a kid, but sometimes I dont care and have fun for days if I feel I need that. This is offtopic, I overreacted. Became emotional and wanted to say how much I like domaining. I am a guy who started with few bucks. Now I own many domains, have regular $xxx sales and almost regular $xxxx sales. Nothing special, but I dont have to work anything else. I am around 10 years in this business. I should have at least one LL.com by now. Although I am hiding my best assets I dont have any LL.com, but I dont have space in my brain ROM for all the fun I experienced. All thanks to domaining. Mostly to this community too where I get the feeling of this business.

OK, I dont know why I am writing this. Never did something similar and never noticed someone else did it here. Thats why I like NP, because it is professional. My apology to all who read this and dont approve (I hijacked this thread. sorry). I will not edit my posts tomorrow, but I will not mind if mods delete them:)

Sorry, just wanted to say that I like evety new determined domainer, evet

Sorry again, mods feel free to delete my posts if you feel they are unproptiated. I cant even write correct English now;) But am on mobile.
OK, drunk domainer who might embaressed himself heading back to fun.
Delete anything, but please dont delete the part where I wrote how much I love domaining and why. Domains paid my bills, paid my phone which enabled me to make an idiot of me here, domains paid my life last few years and secured me for my future life.
Thanks God my battery is off

the interview is simply a story about a young guy with a plan

I don't doubt he could have managed to get access to whatever $M USD

and now his plan is buying domains
good domains

well thats the news

----

but for me thats boring and not newsworthy as everybody here does so
with more or less money

-----

the real news would be

1) how he found a way to get those domain ridiciously cheap
2) how he sold them with a good profit fast
3) how exactly is he negotiating with high ticket customers
4) and other tricks and hints

------

the consense here is ( I think )
he is to much f a greenhorn
to have any of those insights

all the best to you keshan

cheers
Frank
