nubia.com sold for $2M to ZTE.
The story here is that ZTE has reportedly spent $2 million to buy the nubia.com domain name. Considering that the current websites connected to the brand are nubia.cn and nubia.com.cn, this would seem like a way to expand the brand to the U.S. and international markets. Selected ZTE Nubia models are already offered internationally.

So who was the seller of Nubia.com?

Would be great to hear the background story.

Big sale for a brandable. I see lots of brandable sales being reported in the $xx,xxx range. Wonder if brand bucket should increase their pricing.

I don't understand how they were forced to pay THAT much for such a domain.... I must be missing something... In what world would the seller not sell this for considerably less than $2Mil.... It just doesn't add up.

I didn't read all of it. But I can't believe in any scenario that the seller wouldn't have taken... say, 1 million dollars for the name??...

There is a reason that the owner of Nets.com is holding the Brooklyn Nets' billionaire owner over the coals for that name after all of these years instead of letting it go far... say, 1 million dollars.

If you have the one thing that someone else needs, you have the upper hand.

I think you're underestimating some of the great salesmen and negotiators in this industry.

Also, the concept of value pricing applies here.

In the way that someone who can sell a $5000 website job to someone for $100k because they can clearly show the client that this website will make them $500k...a good salesman could show ZTE how this domain is easily worth $20 million in marketing this brand name and building brand recognition in new markets.

And if this really helps built the brand the way they intend, $2 million is a bargain, no?

Nets.com is a huge name though.. It can be sold to so many people for a lot of money...Nubia on the other hand seems way more limited.

If they turned down a $1 million offer from ZTE, they would never see an offer close to that again from anyone else....

Did you not read the post you quoted?

ZTE loses in the scenario you presented. This is worth many multiples of what they paid in marketing money.

7.125 billion people on the planet and everyone is fighting to get their phones in those pockets.

I know what you are saying, but what I'm trying to say is that ZTE seem to be the only company which could justify paying that kind of money for this domain... So if they didn't buy it for that ridiculous price, then nobody else would.... Essentially the name is worth 2mil to ZTE, but not to anyone else, which means that 2 mil is way too much for it in my opinion...Probably 20X more than anyone else would pay for it.

It's not like Holiday.com which could be used by SO many companies that have deep pockets....

ZTE can't afford not to have this domain is another way to look at it, if their main product is called a Nubia phone.

Nubia is also a Geo name for a place, so it's a generic word.

Looks like they got Nubia.ca on Dec 17. You never know when a domain you own will get a new life.

I think the seller of the domain was GoDaddy. Makes more sense.

I should give my names to Godaddy to sell then.

Was it a name from the Berkens portfolio, lol

The articles I've read about the sale don't say much more than the headline. Would love to hear the background. Did the sale price get leaked to generate press about the phone?
