Your best "dumb moments"?

What are some dumb decisions you've made with respect to domains? This can be really bad purchases, passing up on really good names, or vastly underselling a name.

My retard moment was probably passing up on registering Home.sc when I saw it had dropped last December. Letting 1994.us expire in January probably wasn't wise either. The ULTIMATE retard moment however happened on this very message board, and will amaze all of you:

http://www.namepros.com/domain-appraisals/216477-vegas247-net.html

Note the date of the thread. If you look up the whois, the date of registration was 7-15-06. My dumb ass didn't see that the registration through Fabulous for whatever reason didn't go through. Either I just didn't process it all the way through or Fabulous messed up, but either way, the name was still available during that whole thread! Why does it matter? Well, if someone were to have registered it during those 2 days and parked it on Fabulous, they'd be looking at $457.60 in earnings from then to today. :)

I don't think anyone else can outdo that retard moment, but what about YOU?

KerryEdwards.co.uk - not sure the US primaries stretched to the UK....

Someone laughed at me so much, i bet him i could make $1000 on the name before it expired.

Developed it into a poker portal and made $1200 from the site in its 3rd month.

wow, firstly, great revenue there crooky- certainly outdid itself on the appraised value! (due to the fact you have the name etc I would have to say that it wasn't too retarded as at least you noticed in time) I did a very similar thing when the .pk cctld was released- having recived confirmation of my "order" for onlinecasino.pk I rushed here to get an appraisal, before I actually had the name in my account. A kind member here pointed out to me that the name was still showing as available to them, and I had to sweat it out until the actual confirmation came through that I was the registrant!
Then there was the time I posted chat-ti-amo.com up as being my "worst" name, asked others to list theirs, and somebody pointed out there was a developed site on the .it of the name, and the name actually had some good potential (for this I blame my lack of italian knowledge).
I have overpaid for names several times, and sold names to end users when I am pretty sure I could have got more (xee.info - $350). Like lasher, I opened my first domain account with 1&1, including their premium hosting account, and am still suffering- having left my names and sites there due to the headache of moving them...

I'm sure there is more, most of my mates say I am one of the unluckiest people they know (started out by being born ginger so they say) but I know the reality is that I'm just very prone to making an ass of myself!

Heh, thankfully I only regged 2 names at 1and1 to try it out, and have since moved them to a different registrar. Transferring them away was a big pain. That place should have to pay people to register names with them. Just imagine if you had 1000 names registered with them...puke!

Passing on DBA.com way back when. Domains were $100 ea. then, and choices had to be made. (still have a gun to my head over that!)

I suppose this isn't a true "retard moment" but it is a good chance to spout off about my retarded domain name that I must live with day after day.

My website name is inb0x.com. That's inbox with a ZERO, not an "o".

I bought the site for the business, obviously, not the name.

It is a truly lame name. Maybe I am still having the retard moment because I still own the name....

Uh, yeah. A couple days ago I saw a thread with OVT results on "joc yung" and out of curiousity pulled the OVT on "jock yung" as a typo. Over 34k and the .com was available.

Too bad it's "young joc" (who I've never heard of). So now I have a backwards double-typo. When you see that green light on a .com with high OVT it's very hard not to feel rushed to pull the trigger. Should've at least Googled the guy first. That'll be dropping next year... :red:

oh, i did forget one- remember it now. Its a good 'un too cos I deserved it. Out of curiosity registered some typos of a well known .co.uk mortgage provider and debt consolidation (tm names are not my thing btw) to try out the traffic testing option at moniker. Only after I had registered over $200 worth did I realise the grace period does not apply to .co.uk so I couldn't delete the names, most of which get no traffic anyway, so I now have a bunch of trademarked typo names in a country extension that I will have to let drop after the 2 years (mandatory) I registered them for. Expensive lesson that one...

Mine has to be my first domain sale, winacontract.com. And I'm still REALLY angry with myself about this one.. When I received an offer on the email of ยฃ200 from a 'Mrs Bloggs', email address 'mrsbloggs at hotmail dot com' I thought it had to be a company posing as someone who didn't really have a clue.. I did a google search on her name and couldn't see anything.

Steve the hubby didn't even reckon it was worth buying in the first place (durgh!) so I didn't bother to wait til he got home before sending a message back saying I'd already had an offer for ยฃ1200 pounds so if she really wanted it she'd have to better it. What a stupid newbie thing to do. :red: Anyway, Steve came in and I told him who it was and he searched the name too. Second page of google results, there was her name, alongside one of the biggest uk banks. Then he checked whether the .co.uk version was reg'd and it had been reg'd two days earlier by the bank. :red: I still feel stupid for not checking. He kept asking why I'd set a price on it instead of negotiating and I couldn't really answer that!!

The sale went through for a very little over ยฃ1200 and I consoled myself with the fact that they were probably purchasing it for a portfolio or something so may not have paid any more. Don't get me wrong, I'm not greedy, lol!! I only paid six bucks for it!

Sat at my parents a few Sundays ago watching the opening Manchester United soccer game, and there on the advertising hoardings was my freakin domain name flashing before my eyes, and to millions more around the world!! Now they're running this big promo on the name, advertising on tv with celebs, etc etc and it really really really makes me wanna scream each time I see it!

Ah never mind, at least it paid for our holiday but just knowing I could have got a lot more from it bugs the hell out of me! You live and learn.. I just wish it wasn't in my face every weekend! ;)

recent moment

pre-registered a bunch of .mobi names at godaddy but was then tempted by the slightly lower price offered by 1and1. So, pre-registered about 10 names with them. Took me until late afternoon Wednesday to notice that they never put any through (all "Waiting for approval). Come to find out they are not set up to register .mobis yet. Had I not gone with 1and1, I would have some of those names today. As it stands, they are all gone now.

One other thing, I needed a site mainly for FTP transfers and decided on "SV Exchange". Not until after I purchased the domain and paid for the hosting did I realize what it looked like as a URL.... "svexchange" - yep, just take out the one letter and then she is a he...

The first site I ever made, I put days of work into it, hours and hours... atleast 100 hours. It was a blog. I tried to sell it for a measley $40, that's less than $0.50 an hour. But anyways, It sold for $40, and the new owner didnt take down the trafic tracker. I noticed a lot of traffic from sitepoint.com, and decided to visit.... The same site just sold for $1000

Who buys from Sedo anyway? It seems someone must since they are around. Are they unaware of Namepros and DP and Sitepoint? Sedo seems sooo overpriced. Good thing you didn't end up with the name!

Appraisals

When first starting out in 2003, I regged 20 domains,or so, then had them all appraised at www.Registerfly.com. I couldn't believe it! I now owned 20 domains worth $5,000 to $10,000 a piece!! Just like that, in a few days . How much easier could it be to make money! Wait until my friend find out. Wow! I was on cloud 9!!

Then... well, you know the rest... reality hit.

You are kidding, of course. Have you ever heard of www.DnJournal.com? You might see if www.Sedo.com ever appears on there! :cy:

I countered higher at Sedo on a $5,000 offer for my domain... countered then again for his initial bid of $5,000 and when he didn't take it I ended up selling the domain on the forums for $3,333.

:td: :( !!!
