Since the really good names are taken, there are some good sites out there with some bad names. Like, for stock photography DreamsTime.com is pretty good, but what a name!

So, what are some other bad names for decent sites? (mine excluded :) )

Yup it's true... but you can have a brandable name and use that for any website. I made a whole list of brandable, nonsense word domains, which I thought would be perfect for a blog or whatever.

Can't think of any really good sites with bad names though.

Imagine these domains like you do when you see a RegFee domain...

Yahoo.com
Google.com
Baidu.com
Ebay.com
Alibaba.com
Wikipedia.org
Blogger.com
Orkut.com
Xanga.com
Flickr.com
Facebook.com
Comcast.net
Sourceforge.net
AND SO THE LIST GOES....

All Rediculous names... but what they offer makes them so valuble in our eyes.

Without the major backing that they have received over the years, they would just be free/parked domains circulating the domaining industry and you would most likely be laughed at for having.

Go, Jiblob.com, Go!

Brandable nonsense words I like as names for sites better (a lot better) than things that just don't seem to fit, like my example of DreamsTime for stock photography.

Like already said, something nonsensical (that can be pronounced) can turn into something, can take on a personality...but something that doesn't fit I think can work against a site.

Orbitz
Travelocity
Tucows

come quickly to mind.

A large proportion of the worst well known sites are known because they are something different and people remember the names.

Another huge site that makes absolutely no sense if you just look at it via the domain name is ebaumsworld.com.

MySpace.com isn't particularly strange though as it is "My Space" .. My Space on the internet. ;)

the name isn't that important on the longterm if you work on a strong business based on good services. But for the casual site and for the ones that try to pull a buck they make the difference.
Btw, I like better the domains listed above because they're not dictionary words.

In my opinion, if it's a random domain, as long as it it is catchy it prevents any boundaries that might appear from a domain.

With a domain like Yahoo.com.. you can have anythign because there is no expectation from the actual domain.

if you get what I mean

I've always liked this name that I came up with, but I've never fgured out what to place there..... SolPure.com ..... I dunno, but I get a peaceful feeling thinking about what the site should look like.

I'm focusing my business model on the development of made-up "nonsense" names and will be optimizing and using the appropriate, supporting "legitimate" keyword domains- (keyword domains that are currently getting anywhere from 2-50 hits a day and averaging .10-.36 monthly ppc income and $0 affiliate income), as pointers.
For those unfamiliar w/ my "logonym" concept, here are links to a couple of pages that I recently put up that briefly outline the branding concept that I am working with:
http://www.logonyms.com
http://www.CQmics.com
http://www.NQQb.com

I love the creative element, which, by default, is attached to working with "nonsense". :hehe:

Do you think this will have better results than using the actual keyword domains for the sites? Or is that the experiment?
