EBay and Yahoo dropped an announcement bomb early this morning saying that the two Internet giants have agreed to combine their efforts on a number of projects. By 2007, expect an increase in eBay search results on Yahoo!, an increase of contextual text and graphical ads on eBay, PayPal to power Yahoo! Wallet, a co-branded eBay Toolbar, and click-to-call advertising using Yahoo! Messenger with Voice and Skype.

The partnership, which only affects U.S. clients, is thought to be an affront toward Yahoo!'s chief rival in Google, who until recently wasn't considered a threat to eBay. With the arrival of Google Base and a rumored online payment system in the works, eBay has now responded with precision force through its Yahoo! alliance.

The deal will also have a large impact on Yahoo!'s bottom line as the exclusive implementation of PayPal as its third-party payment provider will likely lower the search company's costs in payment processing.

More important to the advertiser and online sellers is the robust mesh of options now available to them through pay-per-call, the increased seller presence though auction listings in organic Yahoo! search results, and delivery of contextual ads on eBay listings.

" This will include testing some sponsored search ads for complementary products and services," said Bill Cobb, president of eBay North America. "For example, a buyer searching for a hair dryer might be presented with sponsored search ads for related items like shampoo or hair brushes. To be clear, we will not place ads on view item pages."

Admitting that eBay's advertising infrastructure "is not as robust as it could be," Cobb said the online auctioneer would be working with Yahoo! to improve its keyword ad program. Part of this involves Yahoo! accepting more keyword purchases from eBay.com to boost eBay's inclusion in sponsored search results.

"These efforts will mean that Yahoo!'s millions of users will have more access to eBay listings, and eBay.com sellers should benefit from increased traffic to the site," said Cobb.

This summer the duo will be testing ad placements at the bottom of empty search results pages that return no matches for queried items. If, for example, a buyer is looking for a particular vintage G.I. Joe action figure, but no listings for the doll are found, ads will appear related to the query instead.

The inclusion of Skype with Yahoo! Messenger creates another targeted opportunity for advertisers as the combination will be a catalyst for pay-per-call advertising where links included in ads allow the searcher to call a merchant directly. All changes will be gradually implemented for the rest of 2006, to be fully realized in 2007.

"Our consumers will benefit from the combination of Yahoo! and eBay's leading technology and services, providing them with one of the best online experiences," said Yahoo! Chief Executive Officer Terry Semel.

News of the massive collaboration effort sent early morning trading into an upswing for the two companies. At 10:30 this morning, Yahoo! shares were up nearly three percent while eBay jumped seven percent. At the same time, Google dropped by 1.27 percent.

That's pretty big news indeed! I think both parties involved stand to benefit from this alliance and that it only makes sense given the ever-expanding Google empire.

I think Google is larger than Yahoo, at least in search results/requests and popularity. But IMHO I think Yahoo is a greater company.

It is very interesting when companies of this size co-operate ...

in somehow similar news , Google made a deal with Dell (source: CNET)

vokkerzen , RyuKenLi , fidget - according to market capital (basically , the number of stocks multiplied by the current stock price) ...

Microsoft > Google > eBay > Yahoo
$241.97B > $115.58B > $48.23B > $46.52B

They are actually pretty close in size. eBay has a slightly larger market cap.

eBay: $48.23 billion
Yahoo: $46.52 billion

And, by the way, Google's is $115.58 billion, and Microsofts is $241.97 billion.

So, Microsoft > Google > eBay > Yahoo

edit: Sorry, I didn't see godian's post, which says the same thing as mine.

I don't like it when companies start to merge, that's when I expect them to become crap if they aren't already.

This alliance can only mean one thing: better things ahead for the consumers with the increased competition, or so we would hope.

I was never able to use Yahoo Wallet or the auctions because of some quirks.. now maybe with the new teamup, I'll be able to.

Well good luck to him. The only reason he is in this race is because they own the OS of which 95% of the world uses. Quiet easy to advertise and get people to pay you money with that kind of a customer base.

I like Google.. I like Yahoo.. Mind you the names are both kiddy lol. Both have some good things about them.. I like Yahoo for its games and it radio stations. I prefer google for its search results and its mapping stuff. MSN I use only because of the huge customer base which uses MSN Messenger. Otherwise I am an opensource Linux fan all the way. I find that software made by people who want to pratice and gain knowleadge of programming is always better than that of a team of over paided programmers. Since the new ones want to make sure the entire thing is bug free.. Not just 65% of it.. And later relise 2 service packs and about 1,000 updates via a website. (If you get my drift).. Mind you I don't think Google chose a good partner? I mean Dell.. and Google have nothing in common.. Other than that will mean that ever computer that comes from Dell will be equipted with Firefox (me liky) and Google Desktop (Earth, etc) which will only increase the already huge amount of growing numbers switching to Firefox anyways.

If I was Google I would take Firefox by its hands.. (Since it nearly has it since the default page is using Google Search anyways).. Go after possible MySpace and leave MSN and Yahoo to bicker and sit back and watch your shares rise :)

But since they would never happen.. lol.. I will just stick with my Fedora and Firefox and my GAIM :) Until than..

i think mergers are good since they help to concentrate a fragmented market. this is good news because it means improved search results

I saw some people talked about mergers ...

this is not a merger (at least not in the economic usage of the word) it is just a co-operation agreement ... a merger envolves that two different companies merge so that there is only one company at the end ... in this case the companies did not merge , they just agreed to co-operate by exchanging some services from one company with some services from the other ...

co-operations , in most cases , are very beneficial for both companies ... each gives a good element to the other one and both benefit ...

mergers , usually , are even more greatly beneficiary for the two companies since personnel , technology and knowhow circulates with great ease inbetween the companies since they are basically one company after the merger ...

on the downside , some mergers have the risk of ending up to monopolies (or virtual monopolies) in the market , which usually is bad for consumers (eg. higher prices)

(note: besides mergers , another popular business tactic is acquisitions , where a big company buys (acquires) another company)

I think now is the time to put money into both Yahoo and eBay. We could see a merger in the coming years. Two companies of equal size, both with great potential.
