    Apparently Apple calls their new XR phone "iphone 10 R" but I bet the consumers will call it "XR" because "10 R" just sounds stupid.

    Apple naming their latest iPhone the XR (instead of the XC which they would have had history with) has got people talking for sure. One of the points being brought up is how the name probably won't last with apple and so the term can come back to the umbrella term for virtual experiences.

    It's actually interesting to see how people who are actually in the field are taking it and conversing about any effects it could have.

    A small indicator is this poll by someone (with a pretty decent following) who hosts a VR Podcast. It's quite close: https://twitter.com/reverendkjr/status/1039973623044292608

    It will last on Google search results though and people still buy last gen iPhones so people will still be buying iPhoneXR's 3 years from now.

    I've gave my views in the other thread, so don't want to talk about it too much here but in short i think it's going to be very difficult to carry on promoting the abbreviation 'XR' for immersive tech now for a number reasons.

    Apple's done no damage to the term 'Extended Reality' so maybe carry on promoting it as that if the industry feels it need a umbella term?

    I guess it's up to the creators if they want the term to flourish. And who knows, maybe Apple has given them a nice springboard they can use. :xf.smile:

    Also, I just want to say I see both points and agree so don't take me as being someone who believes everything is alright while the place is burning down around me.

    .
    If they name their fone XR it better be because it has XR features like a depth scanner on the back of the phone something! Because that will be the first massive exposure of XR to consumers in the field of electronics (other than that XR Yamaha motor bike).

    Fingers crossed, but only realistically hopeful...

    Either way, it's not exactly doom and gloom because XR will likely remain at least a industry term... Which has been strong enough that some of us have made 4 figure sales.

    The only way the XR term will fail, is if the XR industry allows it.

    You are 100% right. If the XR industry stays strong, keeps pushing extended reality, the iPhone XR model will be a past memory in a couple of years time.

    It's just a phone MODEL after all.

    XR was never going to be a consumer term in the next 2 years anyway, so not much as changed apart from the iPhone XR spam articles:ROFL:

    Weird... I just checked a XR name to see if it was available. It was available in all extensions, however, the .info version of it wasn't. Now who would do that?
    It was registered in China in Aug of 2017 and doesn't expire until 2019. The domain isn't being used... it goes to nothing. It was a 5L domain. XR_ _ _ .com

    Hey guys just wondering how much would you value a 4letter (vc)xr.com?
    V = vowel
    C = consonant, of course.

    I'm negotiating a lease agreement with a small VR company for the "XR" version of their URL 😊
