Hi,

I need your input on this so if you can help me out, please post your opinion.
Thank you in advance!

I found a two-word dot net on Sedo (LLLLLL.net), minimum bid USD 350.
Financial/business category, regged since 2002
The dot com is taken (not for sale) and there is a website on it but with lots of red crosses, poor design, hardly any traffic.
I already visited it about a year ago. Since then it hasn't changed.
Back then the red crosses were already there.
Looks like it hasn't been maintained for years.
All other tld's are also taken and none of them is for sale.
To gain some more info on the dot net I checked Estibot:

Estimated value: USD 4,600
Avg Search Results (keyword): 8,097,900
Avg Search Results (sld): 8,097,900
No traffic or page rank for Google/Alexa

Type-in Score:
Overture (domain): 0
Overture (sld): 337
Overture (keyword): 337
Word Tracker (keyword): 21

Average Monthly Searches: 308,840
Average Ad Competition: high

In case the minimum bid amount is NOT a way to avoid receiving lowball offers, should I buy this domain in order to try to resell it?
I do not consider developing it because I don't want to become a traffic sponsor for the dot com.
What do you think?

I dont see anyway to answer this question without the actual domain name. I recognize your trying to protect it, but there are factors involved in valuation beyond what you've posted, not to mention your using an auto appraiser, which can be dangerous to an investor.

If you are really interested with the domain name, I feel you need not to bother much about poor design.
By the way, to give our best possible suggestion we need to know the name. If you prefer sharing let me know via PM. (I will never try to play around you by catching that domain)

It all depends what you have in store for the domain name, resell or develop. If its a strong niche with lots of potential then I say go for it.

If you are investing, consider that you are buying someone else's investment that they couldn't get more than $xxx for. What makes you different?

Filter your search by date added: last 3 months. Why didn't anyone else discover the bargain?

If it is really a category killer, find out what the .com owner wants and consider spending 10x the .net price for the right name. The payoff for real development can be much higher.

This sentiment is spot-on, however it's worth pointing out that domainers as a group are mind-bogglingly lazy and several players- including ones with decent names- still have yet to break out of the failed incest-model of domainer to domainer transactions. Buying any aftermarket name betting on an end user sale can be a huge risk, as if you're buying that name from a generally competent chap, you can be rest assured he's handing over a bucket of slop with all it's end-user prospects explored and mined out... however, if you're buying from someone who's held that domain forever waiting for the mountain to come to them, there can be tons of profit in that.

You might try using a few website traffic tools (goole "check website traffic") to see what they say.

if that specific financial niche commonly uses .net such as poker domains, then it will be a good one.

Once you begin to ask other for advise and suggestion, domaining is NOT for you. Educate yourself. With 15 hours days of input, it won't take long.

Become an expert and seek your own answers.

Basically, don't spend XXX on any domain until you know enough to make your own decisions. Advice will only get you so far, and it is often wrong. Make your own mistakes and build up.

That said, comments about lazy domainers are spot on. Even if they have mined the end users, a sale is still possible down the road. Things change. In many cases, the domain is just sitting and waiting to be plucked.

On the other hand, it sounds as though XXX is a serious dent in your budget. If that's the case, and since you said you don't plan to develop the name, I would advise you to pass. Even if it is a good buy, your money will be sitting idle until you find an end user - and that might take a few years. If you plan to develop it, that's another story.

I think this is a risk that you need to decide whether or not it's worth it for yourself. Good luck with whatever you do and I hope it's the right decision in the end.
