I believe that President Biden was right when he said that Russia is going to Invade Ukraine.

Any intelligent person is going to come to the same conclusion knowing that Russia has already decided to pay any price imposed on it by the West through sanctions.

Short of full military confrontation by the West there is nothing that can make Russia to change its mind as they see this as a golden opportunity to resurrect the once powerful superpower that was equal to the USA.

But Russia’s ambitions are not going to stop with taking over Ukraine since it already has made plans to increase its sphere of influence to Asia, Middle East, and South America and perhaps the whole World knowing that the West is most likely not going to do anything beyond just imposing sanctions which ultimately will hurt the West itself by effecting the Global economy in an adverse way the longer that they go on.

I personally don’t like any of the old ideologies, philosophies, and doctrines of Capitalism, Communism, Socialism, Religious Fundamentalism and all the other “ism” that are derived from the bad human characteristics of Greed, Lust, Hate, Cruelty, Jealousy, Prejudice, and lack of Empathy and that have been infringing on our rights in one way or another throughout the history because they can only exist through supporting inequality, oppression, suppression, torture, killing, and War.

When it comes to saving the World the last thing that I want to see is the further expansion of these old systems that have all already proven to be a failure in dealing with the existential problems that are currently facing Humanity and the Environment.

We don’t want all these political, Religious, and Racial parties and groups to resurrect their past, we want something new that can propel the World into the next Era that is based on the Universal Principles and Values that have been derived through Logic and Compassion and not through Force and Violence.

By “We” I mean all the Intelligent, Righteous, and Peace loving people of the World.

IMO

Sanctions are having detrimental effects. Putin lays seige to cities militarily, the West lay seige to Russian economy. Will Xi fund Putin's war to drain the West or will he leave the tyrant hang out to dry? That is the question, because Russia can't go at the West alone. Everyone will feel the squeeze.
If you are asking me then I say that China is as close to Russia as US is to Europe.

So if US can ever leave Europe in order to make a strategic bond with China then China can abandon Russia to make a strategic bond with the US.

But we know that neither is going to happen because ideological alliances and differences play as much of a roll in International relations as economical interests do.

@Cannuck , the mystery plane, (Antonov An-124-100) with no call sign or flight plan from Poland, is landing now in Pisa, Italy...my assumptions are that it has refugees on it.

Trust me every competent country/military has game planned for every possible scenario.

With that said, it doesn't mean the outcome is going to be good. The truth is sometimes there is just not common ground possible.

No one is rooting for this, but it is where we are at the moment.

I heard Biden say "WW3" today...not a good sign.

IMO trust and confidence will win the day. Does China trust Russia more than US? It's not Europe, but rather Taiwan in their crosshairs.

China has grain and energy shortfalls that Xi agreed to purchase from Russia. If Russia fails to meet those contractual obligations, and it is highly likely they will (after a failed conquest), all confidence will be lost.

We must recognize the human cost is beyond money ...Ukraine's sacrifice cannot be measured. 🌻🌻🌻

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said there were 16,000 volunteers ready to fight alongside Russia-backed forces.
Very very dangerous move, & the fact that Russian forces would need such an unusual reinforcement can't be good news for their overall progress. They'll argue they don't, but they announced they plan to make it easier for those to get there..

Also, according to Al Jazeera, a Pentagon spokesperson claims 90% of Ukrainian forces are still operational & effective, that's more bad news for the other forces. So unfortunately it doesn't sound like it's ending soon.

“The alarmists were right all along”: A Moscow journalist on Putin and the new Russian reality

An independent journalist describes what life is like inside Russia’s parallel universe.

"So what’s it like to live in this totalizing parallel universe? What are Russians seeing? What are they hearing? Most importantly, what do they believe?

To get some answers, I reached out to Alexey Kovalyov, a former editor for the Moscow Times and now an editor at Meduza, an independent news site formerly headquartered in Russia but now based in Latvia (the site has been blocked by the Russian government). Kovalyov was living in Moscow and escaped to Latvia last week as Putin’s regime imposed even heavier restrictions on press freedom.

We talked about what messages are getting through in Russia, how the media environment has evolved in the past couple of weeks, and if he believes reality might finally crash through the fog of state-sanctioned disinformation."

You are a doom and gloom type of person @oldtimer you are the creator of this thread titled 'World War 3' and here's some things you have said on the previous page (page 33), I've not gone through the rest of the thread to find more quotes:-

provided that it doesn't end in some kind of an Armageddon in the next few weeks).

IMO
Perhaps it's okay for you to have such hopes, but the World also has to be ready for the worst.

IMO
WWIII has already started, we might be in it for the next 10 years if not longer.

IMO
Meanwhile as you yourself indicated there are going to be food (and energy) shortages which I believe is going to start other conflicts around the World soon.

IMO
Perhaps it's okay for you to have such hopes, but the World also has to be ready for the worst.

Meanwhile everyone needs to be prepared for all the short and long term Humanitarian Catastrophes that might arise because of this ordeal.

IMO
We are no where near a world conflict but it sounds like you are in a bunker already.

I vote turn the title of this thread into 'Russian invasion of Ukraine' because that is what we are all talking about.

@oldtimer likely knows well what it was like during the Cold War era, and we have passed that threshold IMO. KGB do not fool around.

Russia has had an ongoing war with the west and I fear we are sorely prepared for the worst that has yet to come.

We are passed the cold war threshold? So we are closer to a world war now than during the Cuban missile crisis?

We are passed the cold war threshold? So we are closer to a world/nuclear war now than during the Cuban missile crisis?

The Cold War era lasted decades, the Cuban missile crisis came to a head within 5 minutes.

I suspect we have better safeguards against nukes today, but considering we're still in pandemic and world tensions are high, they are trying to contain the military outbreak in Ukraine, but in effect, the world is involved.

First time since WWII that a big power invades by force, siege and mass shelling its neighbours in Europe, exactly the same way and for the same reasons as Hitler did.
I think this is worst than the cold war era. An invasion in Europe and a current genocide is taking place right now the same way as Hitler did.
With Hitler first moves (invasion of Czechoslovakia and Poland) the same way as the current russian Hitler is doing with Ukraine.

Since the conversation has turned in this direction, I suggest all take a couple of minutes and read the article below. There have been some statements by the little general I had not heard before. The paragraph below is taken from the article.

Read the fine print: Russia’s nuclear weapon use policy

'In his February 24 speech, Putin echoed that unusual language to describe his Ukraine invasion. The United States, he claimed, was creating a hostile “anti-Russia” next to Russia and in Russia’s historic land. “For the United States and its allies, it is a policy of containing Russia, with obvious geopolitical dividends,” he said. “For our country, it is a matter of life and death, a matter of our historical future as a nation. This is not an exaggeration; this is a fact. It is not only a very real threat to our interests but to the very existence of our state and to its sovereignty” [emphasis added]. Putin has defined the current situation as one in which, in line with the principles of its deterrence policy, Russia retains the right to use nuclear weapons.'

This is a conflict and there are many conflicts happening in the world right now, the reason why this conflict is getting so much attention is because it’s in Europe and right on NATO’s doorstep and because Russia are the aggressors.

For a nuclear war to happen all parties have to be prepared to go to war, NATO don’t want war with Russia and there’s no indications Russia want a war with NATO, which means this is not even a cold war yet (ie all nations building up arms to destroy each other), never mind a hot one.

I’ve been reading other comments by oldtimer (and others) about NATO getting involved, setting up a no fly zone etc. Now that would cause tensions to rise, what is being done to Russia (sanctions) along with them fighting a war at the same time = costing them huge amounts of money/resources/men every day along with how miserable it will be making Russians feel back home, they can’t even log into Facebook/Instagram or pay for anything online anymore, everyone who worked online are now no doubt unemployed in Russia, even state media is starting to criticize and Putin's arrested his 'head of foreign intelligence' for their incompetence on how he never foresaw how strong Ukraine would fight back:-

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...foreign-intelligence-branch-house-arrest.html

Cracks are appearing, how unpopular this war will become and is becoming in Russia, is the way to go to ending this conflict and for a weaker Russia afterwards without a single bullet being fired by a NATO solider, the longer this goes on Russia won’t want a conflict with anyone again for a long time and even if they did, they wouldn't be able to afford it, certainly for the remainder of Putin's life.

They are learning the hard way, just how America learned in Vietnam/Iraq/Afghanistan, probably even more so with all the sanctions and companies no longer doing business in Russia, horrible as it sounds, we just have to let it play out give Ukraine the tools so they can defend themselves and its working, western leaders have all the hands to play, why do something silly to play into Putin’s hands and give Russians an excuse to side by their government, how the west are the aggressors and keeping Putin in power even longer?

In Putin's mind "it's a matter of life and death" and everything he wants to say. Anyway he is a proved compulsory liar, so whatever he says, you cannot believe anything.

Well, if "it's a matter of life and death" why he hasn't invaded Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia?
Maybe because they are already into NATO and the russian Hitler prefers to invade a defenseless (well, at least way underarmed and isolated in terms of "NATO") than a country located into NATO that would deploy immediately Article 5 of the Alliance "An attack against one member state is an attack against all member states".

Agreed. I consider him a demon of the highest caliber.

An awesome development in the last 24 hours is that he is placing high ranking officials of the FSB under house arrest...blaming them for the failure to capture Ukraine in a matter of days. His psychosis will deepen...maybe one of the high ranking officials that is facing life in prison or death might decide, before he is arrested, that Putins reign as king should come to an end.

The covert war (the one we don't hear about) is likely to have a major rebound effect, especially if Russia goes offline. Ordinances don't have to be nuclear, a Russian threat of bio-chemical warfare is too real.

What are you expecting POTUS to do exactly? Do you want him to send the military in, crush Russia, and risk global nuclear war? If not, then what do you suggest exactly?
