Won a domain at SnapNames. Can I transfer it?

OK. I just won a domain At SnapNames. The domain kept it's original registration date. It's in my account at MyDomain. Can I transfer it already?

This is not a newly registered domain.

I got the answer from them in a subsequent message

Important: If you choose to transfer this domain name to another registrar within the first 10 days following the date of this notice, you risk losing part of your new registration term. No refunds or credits will be issued in that event.

What does that mean exactly?

I think it means the one-year registration extension included with a snapnames winning bid might not carry over if you transfer the domain too quickly.

You shouldn't be able to transfer the domain out because of the 60 days ICANN policy. Of course, after 60 days have passed, you should be able to do it.

There is no 60 days ICANN policy when the domain isn't registered anew.

What I interpret this to mean is that the renewal I just paid for in the purchase price might not be actually be renewed if I transfer out within the first 10 days. After that no problem, I get the renewal I paid for plus the addition of 1 year with the transfer.

If you transfer the domain name away, you will not gain any time. This happens whenever I transfer a recently renewed domain away from NetworkSolutions. It turns out, NetworkSolutions cancels the renewal, leaving only the transfer + year left. Thus... Paid for 2 years, but got 1.

Exactly. Because the expired domain was auto-renewed with the registry. Since the auto-renew may be canceled within 45 days, it's typical for registrars to begin auctions around 35 days after the domain has expired. If the domain gets no bids, they let it go into redemption, the auto-renew is canceled and they get a refund from Verisign.

As for outgoing transfers, it depends on the registrar. For instance Enom has a 6-week lockdown period on domains won at the auctions.
