Just read this today:

http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/10/vista-successor-vienna-planned-for-late-2009/

Now that Microsoft has freed Windows Vista from the shackles of a five year development process, the company is attempting to the wow starts now us by revealing that it plans to have its next major operating system ready within the next two-and-a-half years, giving Vista's successor an expected release date of late 2009.

Speaking to PC World, Ben Fathi, the executive in charge of the OS's core components, made it clear that he was referring to a whole new OS -- known to have the codename "Vienna" -- and not the upcoming Vista service pack, codenamed "Fiji."

It seems they are taking some of the criticism about new OS releases on their backs. What do you guys think?

I know I've already read comments generally saying that if they say 2009, it means 2012...but i don't know...i reckon they might make this one on time.

p.s. Loving these new names if not the OS's, Vista, Fiji, Vienna...Bit more interesting than XP and the like.

Those are just the codenames. Vista was codenamed Longhorn for a while, and XP was Whistler.

Whistler and Longhorn were code names, Vista, Vienna and presumably Fiji are release names :)

Considering that they will be patching and realising Security fixes for Vista during the next 12-16 months, i will stick with XP Pro for now.

I will believe it when I see it. I wouldn't expect to see anything before 2012 at the earliest.

No, Vienna and Fiji are not release names. The release names have not been announced yet.
Wikipedia said:
Windows "Vienna" (formerly known as Blackcomb) is Microsoft's codename for a future version of Microsoft Windows, originally announced in February 2000, but has since been subject to major delays and rescheduling. As of February 2007, the name of the operating system used internally is undisclosed and is not used publicly by Microsoft.
Microsoft's next version of Windows has been given the codename "Fiji,"
Fiji is supposed to be a small release, due in 2008 or 2009, and Vienna is supposedly going to be a "huge departure from current incarnations of Windows."

Conflicting stories here lol, I thought "Fiji" was the release or codename name for the upcoming Vista service pack? (R2)

That means they're going to have to support 3 operating systems until 2011 when Microsoft said they will support XP up to.

You're right, I misread it. I thought that they were saying it would be a new version of Windows, but they were saying that it would be a service pack. My bad.
