I know that the auto update should be located in the Start Menu, but it's not there :-/

If you are talking about Service Pack 2, then I would not download it... I did a couple months ago and I it drove me crazy! It interfered with my FTP and other things. Just my opinion...

there where so many updates released today for all windows platforms. (pretty much every peice of windows software going)

and windows update will only automatically check the content servers for updates at a scheduled time. i think the default is 3am. so if they where released today it would have picked them up tomorrow

Well I wasnt sure when they was released. A friend called asking me how to get there and I went myself. I seen 6 updates and knew Win Auto Update didnt tell me so...

Win Auto Update isnt listed in my start menu... never has been...

SP2 for Xp has gave me no problems. To be honest to be without it is crazy.

Maybe it was just me but I did not like it... and as soon as I could get it off I did. I know others who feel the same way. But everyone uses computers differently. I am glad it didn't give you problems.

auto update isnt an ap its a system tool so it wont be placed in the start menu

go intro control panel
then go to system
then click automatic updates

you can configure it all there

but i run sp2 at work only because i have too. any other machine i use i refuse to install it on. its just a firewall! ive got a ยฃ100 firewall sitting between me and the internet.

Or just right click on the my computer icon and select properties. There is a tab labeled "Automatic Updates" You can turn it on, off, schedule and etc. There.

Actually Win XP does not have a firewall. The firewall, etc comes with installing SP2. SP2 is preinstalled with WinXP after the year 2002, I believe.

i wouldnt really call the previous version of the firewall. it was more of a "turn it and block everything" rather than a "oh you can turn me on and tweek me to your settings"

the configuration on it was crap.

sp2 is just a glorified firewall. i have no reason to run another firewall so i dont need it.

The original firewall worked good for me. Not downloading SP2 is missing a lot of patches. You want hacked go for it. :)

im behind a hardware firewall with a linux server in a dmz. the linux server is locked down and will drop any packets on any unopen ports (and theres only 4 open).

ive been running xp since pretty much the day it came out and ive never been hacked. i run anti-virus. and if i do get hacked its easy enough just to reinstall windows.

so installing sp2 isnt really going to help me.
