All the buzz today has been about how Go Daddy supports SOPA and other registrars using this as a way to offer transfer specials away from Go Daddy.

Will you boycott Go Daddy because of their support of SOPA ?

Godaddy is imho a bad registrar, and I don't use them for a number of reasons. I maintain an account there for the occasional auction or domain push, but everything gets moved out 61 days later.

Past boycotts, like the Elephant Boycott, never affected Godaddy one bit. It only promoted more capitalist values by embracing other registrar's transfer coupons (not that i'm complaining).

I think the "spirit" of this SOPA is good. The tragedy will only be seen during "implementation", if legit domain owners are taken down Gestapo-style by registrars like Godaddy.

Of course the spirit of SOPA presumes that registrars have infinite wisdom like God, so we should fully trust their wisdom to decide which domains are good or bad that immediate punishment is justified.

It would be saying that Godaddy can never go wrong when deciding to pull the plug on a domain without having the domain owner offer a defense.

As we can see from various WIPO cases, many Trademark Owners can have faulty claims. There's no doubt that a lot of criminals will be taken down by SOPA. The US Government presumes that sacrificing the innocent few, is worth the draconian measure.

Exactly. It's poorly written which makes it too far-reaching and wide open to abuse. And Godaddy has a reputation for pulling the plug at the first complaint and figuring out if it was The Right Thing To Do later.

No matter what registrars say about their opinion of SOPA (pro or con), ALL will turn over your domain if demanded by the Feds. Godaddy is just being honest about the reality.

So it's really irrelevant.

SOPA is a result of an industry that has failed to self-regulate from top on down and was totally predictable. That is not to say I'm "for" SOPA--I'm not--but I'm not going to waste my time switching registrars. While I have some issues with GD, I have a great rep, and that is worth a lot to me.

I do believe that freedom of speech will ultimately win out--the U.S. Supreme Court, no matter Democratic or Republican, takes that very seriously--but it will take years and millions (maybe billions) of dollars to sort out.

If due process is violated by the U.S. government, it's an illegal act.
There is also the question of jurisdiction.
The U.S. Constitution and federal law is being violated 24/7, openly and secretly. It seems that most don't care.

Looks to Internet Community & Fellow Tech Leaders to Develop Legislation We All Support

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Dec. 23, 2011) — Go Daddy is no longer supporting SOPA, the “Stop Online Piracy Act” currently working its way through U.S. Congress.

“Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation — but we can clearly do better,” Warren Adelman, Go Daddy’s newly appointed CEO, said. “It’s very important that all Internet stakeholders work together on this. Getting it right is worth the wait. Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it.”

Go Daddy and its General Counsel, Christine Jones, have worked with federal lawmakers for months to help craft revisions to legislation first introduced some three years ago. Jones has fought to express the concerns of the entire Internet community and to improve the bill by proposing changes to key defined terms, limitations on DNS filtering to ensure the integrity of the Internet, more significant consequences for frivolous claims, and specific provisions to protect free speech.

“As a company that is all about innovation, with our own technology and in support of our customers, Go Daddy is rooted in the idea of First Amendment Rights and believes 100 percent that the Internet is a key engine for our new economy,” said Adelman.

In changing its position, Go Daddy remains steadfast in its promise to support security and stability of the Internet. In an effort to eliminate any confusion about its reversal on SOPA though, Jones has removed blog postings that had outlined areas of the bill Go Daddy did support.

“Go Daddy has always fought to preserve the intellectual property rights of third parties, and will continue to do so in the future,” Jones said.

Well, the news article did say that the main reason why they stopped supporting SOPA is because of the threat of a Netflix-type exodus away from Godaddy.

So it seems Capitalism has won over.

It also shows that Capitalism dwells on Self-Interest. It appears Godaddy customers do not care much about Bob killing an elephant, as much as their own business getting affected by SOPA.

I'm not sure why Godaddy wants to take the job of internet police officer. It claims it was able to shutdown hundreds of thousands of domains even without SOPA. So why ask to be given a badge to become internet cop?

Maybe because Godaddy thinks that if Registrars absorbed the role of law enforcement, it will put a heavy burden on costs on its smaller competitors and force them out of business.

I believe SOPA is a good thing. HOWEVER, this law can get out of hand and quickly. There is so many detrimental catastrophes that could be waiting to happen and that is why I am AGAINST sopa. Many people I know love the idea of sopa on the outer shell but what could become of sopa is where the real issue lyes.

I dislike their stance on SOPA, and I absolutely despise their lying about it. It's disgusting! How could they think they would get away with it? Mostly though, they only lost like 30% of sales for a few days. They weren't even hit that hard and they probably won't be hit too hard in the long run. It'd be nice if they listened to their customers( and even nicer if the US Government listened more to the people) but then again what can you do? They're going to support SOPA, period.
