I don't understand why everyone is trying to register names at godaddy

I admit that he has a good marketing but their services do not use extra terrestrial technology
Sexy ads and fair support can't make him have 7,622,329 difference from the next registrar

Some Stats (Position - Registrar - Market Share - Number of registered domains)
1 GO DADDY 18.638% 14,326,239
2 NETWORK SOLUTIONS 8.722% 6,703,910
3 ENOM 7.262% 5,582,226
4 TUCOWS 7.099% 5,456,488
5 MELBOURNE IT 5.462% 4,198,454
6 SCHLUND+PARTNER 3.878% 2,980,602
7 REGISTER.COM 3.525% 2,709,911
8 WILD WEST DOMAINS 2.701% 2,076,166
9 MONIKER 2.287% 1,758,048
10 BULKREGISTER 2.040% 1,568,434
11 PUBLIC DOMAIN REGISTRY 1.738% 1,335,976
12 NAMEKING.COM 1.658% 1,274,164
13 DIRECTNIC 1.595% 1,225,912
14 DOTSTER 1.469% 1,129,535
15 ONLINENIC 1.379% 1,059,858

There are hundreds of good and cheap registrars

The godaddy phenomenon looks like a bubble to me
It is expanded too much
I believe it's better for the market in order to work properly to have equal sides
This promotes competition and the end user takes the benefits

Try using other registrars too, you'll be surprised but they do offer similar and sometimes better services than godaddy

We deal with domain from early 1995 and we used many registrars, some were good, some average, other just bad
A steady registrar for me is tucows, a nice overall namecheap, a secure one moniker, a cheap and good domainsite/name.com

What i like to godaddy is that it gave some value to daddy or maybe the it's like "go daddy get me a domain" which means that once again daddy is going to put his hand to the pocket

What do you like and what you don't like with GoDaddy ?
Am i the ONLY one that don't like GoDaddy ?

....my membership of np has taught me that although there are zillions of cheap registrars there are very few which make the domain management experience a pleasant one rather than a hair-pulling, angst-ridden trip of unpleasantness. there are 3 registrars which consistently rise above the rest with different sets of np members: moniker/namecheap/GD. For many of us GD is at least a second choice registrar to use when offers are tempting enough.....so I think the effort to trash GD here is sour grapes....save the poisonous arrows for 1+1 and regfly which really are the epitome of cheap AND nasty.

Let's say I have 600 regsitered domain names. I have 4 registered at GoDaddy. That's how much I like then. I think GoDaddy is all gimic. You can't regsiter a domain name without trying to be tricked to use 100 other services.
It's like they planned their website hoping people will forget to unclick on stuff.
Besides, I never mix domains and girls! Ha! (not looking anyway) If I want to look at girls, or videos, there are 10 million other sites I would use before GoDaddy. Besides, overall, especially without coupons, their prices aren't that great.

IMHO

I don't know if you mean any of these or it's just a matter of speech but at least i don't try to trash anybody and i assure you my quiver is totally empty of poison arrows

I just "dare" to say that i don't like godaddy and as i saw i'm not the only one
However i see few people trying to trash everyone with a different opinion

What is GD for me ? A good gambler investing a lot of money for branding in an industry with very low actual profit
I like domains so much that i don't like to be offered as cherries
If i have to make profit with domains i must sell webhosting and other services apart domains ?

I used them once and only once. I have yet to hear or read anyone touting their services except what they spew in their own advertisements. My God, they must be spending a boat load of money on print advertising! They need to divert some of their ad budget to real live and useful help and customer service.

It's hard to believe than only GD is the only one able to give this kind of superior support and fair price level

I still wonder why all the other registrars leave him alone at the top and don't care (as the stats show) to reach his %

I believe GD ruined domain reselling business once and for all
Why someone has to sell webhosting and extra services to balance the profit for the loss of domain sales ?

The people that don't loose from this situation are verisign (his standard $6) (and all the other registries) and icann (his standard $0.25)

No trashing here! :)

You know it is pretty snobby to say things like "the serious domainer doesn't use GD". It's a marketplace - GD offers much more than many for a great price. I'm sure some pretty valuable domains are registered there... but I guess those domainers are not "serious".

"Suppose in a game of life— and it is but a twopenny game after all— you are equally eager of winning. Shall you be ashamed of your ambition, or glory in it?"
— Thackeray, "Autour de mon Chapeau," 1863

What do domainers want? Cheaper registrations... total DNS control... ease of transfer... maybe we should go back to the Network Solutions days??...
NetSol deserves to lose market share... they are expensive for no good reason and rely on business from when they were the only game in town. I guess I always thought them as the Cadillac of registrars... and they are just GM. They offer nothing that GD does without charging a fee (subdomains etc...)

MELBOURNE IT - the whole yahoo domains thing is dreadful... these really are aimed at end users... every time I have tried to tfr a name it has been miserable! I think these guys are not evil... just incompetent.

What is strange is why all the other companies don't create similar marketing strategies, support schemes, special support for large customers, old customers, coupons and low prices and maybe tv ads too

mmm... that is strange... now... I might be accused of populism here... but I think it is because the others are Elitist, niche, crooks or crap :hehe:

I adore this line...

Can I submit it to the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations?

Let's use our logic for once

Even you make some logical points if you see reality as pretty snobby thing then you must rethink the whole issue of domains

Reality is that serious domainers (people with large portfolios) don't select GD as their registrar. Moniker for example is a fair choice for them

Do you really like domains so much to adore this line ?

Is there a genuine market for domains selling/reselling anymore ?
The domain names market shifted to extra services
Come and get something extremely cheap and i will charge you for the extra
Is the domain competition a % game for the company if his customer selects something more to make profit ?

Why nearly all big and medium registrars sell webhosting and other stuff now ?

For me a decent registrar is namecheap because with fair-medium price made many people like him
Moniker because they truly support and protect the names
enom and directi because they support domain resellers

It's not that i hate GD, as i said again i'm against concentrate the whole domain power to one company
Look the numbers it's scary so big difference

When i created the topic i knew i will be shot but i'm happy to see that i'm not the only one
I saw similar posts in this forum and other related forums and received PM from people they were just afraid to say their negative opinion in public about this phenomenon

At the end only rule applies
Whatever works for you and this is something you can put in Oxford Dictionary of Quotations or anywhere else

I'm a big fan of GoDaddy. Like all domain businesses, they do have aspects about them that are frustrating about their services but I think that they are great. They are continually pushing their boundaries at free software related domain services to go with their domains and are spending millions apon millions promoting the good news that domains are not as expensive as many of their competitors would want the market to believe. They have gambled a lot with their prices and often sell domains below cost with their aggresive pricing while maintaining a good quality service.

Selling on eBay and TDNAM, I find that many people get disappointed if they find out that a domain they bought is not with GoDaddy and I have had to refund people because of this issue. I don't know if I'd be into domaining if it wasn't for GoDaddy.

If someone is disappointed when he doesn't see it registered at godaddy then what i can say. People are trained to believe what marketers want

Boobs Ads - Generic Ads - Fair Support - Cheap Prices = Explosive Combination
