Will the value of .CO.UK fall with .EU coming in?

I first heard of plans for .EU sometime back in 1999. Well, its coming to the close of 2005 now and .EU is finally happening.

Will .EU weaken the value of .CO.UK speculations?

As a tld, .EU is like a "hybrid" between gTLDs and the ccTLDs of it's member nations. As such it'd likely impact the value of both within its boundaries, especially the latter (and not just .co.uk but also .de, .fr, .it and others); Isn't the whole concept of EU to eventually evolve into something like (and compete with) the US?

So how about: Would the ccTLDs of EU members have appreciated more over the coming years absent addition of .EU in the mix? .... and the answer to this, no matter what, would remain just an opinion being almost impossible to address objectively.

Generally speaking a higher supply means lower prices if the demand stays the same. Two things have to be considered though:

- Is .eu a competitor of .co.uk? European companies probably need their .eu domain while European people probably prefer their country-specific extensions in most cases. I am not sure if .eu is really necessary.

- What's the future of the EU? If the EU becomes mega-awesome the value of .eu wil obviously rise. If the EU stagnates or even tanks on the other hand (for whatever reason) .eu domains become worthless.

I'm not yet convinced of the necessity of the .eu extension.

I am not so sure about .co.uk, but I guess .de will lose the most

Personally I don't think .co.uk will suffer. The TLD has been well-established for years. I don't believe the other European TLDs will suffer much either. I see .eu as complementary to existing ccTLDs.
However, the more tightly regulated European extensions like .fr or .ee etc may lose ground to .eu

co.uk can suffer only from .gb and if second level .uk will be allowed. I believe that some day we will see business.uk sold.

NO, .co.uk is a tld on its own... its has as special feeling for the people
in the uk... i think a lot of organisations will buy the .eu but will not stop
using there .co.uk same thing for .be .nl etc.

in the short term it will weaken speculation first in the smaller cos with less developed ccTLD presence. Specifically re .co.uk, the answer is maybe, depending on the nature of the business, but I would think that one extension that maybe weakened re speculation might be .net

I think the same! .de are the most famous and if someone is gonna lose, it will be them!

Although i've pre-registered a few .EU speculatively, I'm not too bothered about them. I think it will take years before it becomes a force, if at all. Its all down to the layman and type-ins and i think you tend to either go ".com" or with your specific country tld when you do a type-in.

I think EU has potential but less so on type-ins and more from a keyword/SEO angle. That said, i think domain names themselves will become less important in SEO terms over time.

Er....in answer to your question, IMHO...No :)

They may suffer slightly but I don't think it will make much of a difference to how people use their own country extensions, most are pretty established

ie .co.uk .de

Well, evidently, neither co.uk nor .de will suffer. I think that .fr .es .it .nl also will not. But newly joined country will loose - .lv .lt .pl. hu .si .cz .sk .ee .cy .mt. I think also that .pt .dk .fi will loose a little

I think the .co.uk has a firm enough grip in the UK now not to be affected :imho:

Can't see it effecting .co.uk, we're proud to be english and people with uk businesses won't stop buying them for .eu which imo is a rubbish extension!

.eu looks rubbish only to britishers. Nothing personal, but UK has always been a little outside of continental Europe.
