If you think the new TLDs will dilute the namespace, making domains in current extensions worth even less than now, what do you propose to do about it? What do you propose we do about it?

I believe most of the applicants for new TLDs are counting on speculators and domainers to carry them through the first couple of years, at least. If we quit cutting our own throats, we could do something about it.

First thing to do is not to do anything.

Let us not jump over the cliff like lemmings at every land rush.

And, yes, I have been guilty of this, but no more.

The premiums will be snatched by the "big boys," and the rest will be not worth reg fee.

Just sit back and enjoy the show.

;)

And hang tight onto your credit card.

I don't have any research to back this up, but what do I think?

I don't think recent new tlds ( including cctlds marketed as tlds ) devalued .com

I don't think .shop will devalue .com

I propose to stand by and watch the ensuing train crash.

No particular impact on established extensions, so it's business as usual.

Let's do nothing, there is nothing we can do. I don't feel concerned.

Smart domainers are buying a special .com rider to add to their standard insurance policy.

It is a question that all domain investors want to have answered. How will the flood of new slds (sh!tty level domains) effect .com?

I believe it will be business as usual. Although, the upcoming generation may beg to differ... Invest at your own risk as always B-)

IMO if .co failed to do so, nothing will happen. .Com is the king!

Both scenarios are possible. Either .com will become even stronger or be diluted. But since .co was so hyped and it's shorter than .com and "co" stands for company and all the BS hyped, and where is .co standing now? Even .net and many other extensions are a lot stronger than .co. Some .co holders say that you still need to wait but it has been almost 3 years (1 month left to complete 3). I cut my losses after the first year and dropped them all... Anything can happen... End users would even respond asking if I forgot the "m" at the end... And that's after all the superbowl and godaddy advertising. Also most of the .co sales have been between domainers/speculators themselves not end users. So where is the demand?

Some would disagree with that outlook...

I am one of those, but it's one of the only ones I think will have legs in the long run.

Personally, I believe .COM will remain king. It's been around the longest and it's been burned into everyone's brain by now. There will always be money in premium domains (no matter what extension) because the market is so big and broad for those. Problem is, you can't even get those for a decent price anymore because every new company to launch an extension has realized the money that can be made from auctions in the Landrush Period.

These new extensions will probably do nothing but make some quick cash for the companies that launched them (on premium names that go to auction during Landrush) and aside from that it will just make the .COM all the stronger... The guy who owns ChicagoTravel.com will buy Chicago.pw and know deep down inside that some of his .pw traffic is probably ending up at Chicago.com...It will just make him wish he actually had the .COM that much more! Just an example and just my opinion.. I'm aware traffic, development and a number of other factors would come into play with that..I could always be wrong!

The glut of extensions will make .com stronger and worth more. Who can remember a strange extension like .tg or something on an already mediocre domain: buydomainshere.tg or the like. But everyone knows com. and they automatically assume .com unless specified it's not. most of the new extensions will tank except for a few best like travel.tg, and even they won't get natural traffic like a .com.

i think its funny people are even saying things like ".co failed"

its been a couple years.. we're talking about developed websites not a pair of shoes you just buy and put on. im not saying bet on any particular TLD "catching on" or that .co is some big winner but some of you people are acting like the .CO re-launch was a movie release date or something..

really.. so you dont remember like .org - its only .com ?

two random letters may be awkward to remember but entire words are very easy to remember.

If you look, you'll see my comment was about "strange extensions." I don't think .org is strange, do you?

No, I don't think it would be hard to remember Utah.travel. I actually like some of the word extensions and think they may stand the test of time. For example, I think .blog would be great.

But I also think when you start mixing things like oldhats.travel, things may get confusing, since most people are conditioned to expect mostly the main TLDs.

Humans are lazy species. It's in your genetic makeup. They won't try to REMEMBER stuffs like that. They are too preoccupied looking for jobs, finding romance, and watching football.

What they would do is type whatever pops out of their brain, into the search engines.

Humans like to be served.

The problem isn't with all those new TLD's

The problem isn't with all those new TLD's, but rather, with the characters who gonna buy them, form gangs, and terrorize everybody else who disagrees with them.

Unfortunately, we already had this ugly experience here, at NP.
