Hello Mods & Mems,

This is a list of the top 100 reported dot Biz sales in the last 6 months.

My question is will dot biz ever be considered more than the stepchild of TLD's?

I think you will find that .biz will mature outside of the standard ASCII domains with idn.biz coming to the fore.

There are huge limitiations for idn, limited to cctld , com/net/org/info. All other extensions that may support IDN are cctlds, eg .nu (thus value would be reduced).

The .biz registry has been smart to move in to IDN.biz with recent releases of Chinese.biz, Japanese.biz and this week Korean.biz.

Love em or hate em, idn's are here to stay and will only grow in stature. I think idn.biz will take a significant place in the market.

Apparently .asia / .mobi will go IDN in the not too distant future. I personally do not see much use for ascii/idn.asia ( major keywords excepted) and idn.mobi may well be a difficult one particularly for non romaniz/sed characters.

If any of what I forsee occurs then .biz ascii will benefit also. JMO

I don't think the TLD has any future.

.biz has hardly been successful (when compared to .info for example).
Sure there are enough registrations to make the registry viable economically. That does not mean the TLD has won the hearts and minds of consumers.

I also think .biz will continue to suffer just like .net from the fact that the ccTLDs have been rising. Of course .biz is a global (generic) TLD but not every business is trading globally.
I would even predict a large shift from .biz to .us by US businesses.

It's an odd TLD like .mobi, with a raison d'être that is dubious at best. IMHO .biz is best forgotten.

It's too far behind and not enough horsepower to catch up.

Almost philisophical K.. I think its reached maturity right now. Maturity in so much that it has a relative percentage benchmark to the .com equivilent, thats unlikely to shift.

Other philisophical musings:

Will a boy ever be born that can swim faster than a shark?
Could you kill a tiger armed only with a biro pen?
If a hard-on falls in a forest and no-ones around, do you go blind?

Well, it is Friday.. :)

As far as I am concerned the only reason I turned to .biz was that certain words were available that I wanted and were not in .com/.net at the time. And it was a BIG mistake, .biz really sucked for me.There were of course, only 6 TLDs at the time. Though if it did not take off even then, it's doubtful now with 200+ options.

Nope.

Probably. Though then you'd be a poacher...

Now this is unanswerable... roflmao.

think if you can get good keywords cheap, & plan on developing then can be a good option

Plenty of .biz names out there.

I think if I wanted a better domain for my business or company, and didn't want to pay a small fortune for it, then .biz is the way to go.

Relevant extension. More relevant than .net, .org, .info etc.
Most names available for a small fee.
Quality back end support.
Avoids long, hard to remember dot com name, like "AreaBusinessName.com" if that is even available :)

IMHO, no. It's too late. The public will always view it as a lesser alternative for those that missed out on the .com...the public has already settled on .com for commercial purposes, so where exactly does .biz fit in?

I agree with Tom.

I think it is too late to make much of the .biz TLD. The problem is with .biz, its in direct competition with .com - Unlike .org or even .info to a lesser extend, these TLD's have atleast on face value, different site criteria. Although we as domainers recognize plenty of commercial sites built on net/info/org/ec.

Now, the problem I keep running into is that traditional business, has set there teeth firmly into .com. You'll find few top companies advertising there sites on anything but .com (unless its non-profit). The issue here is the consumer. As a consumer, even a saavier consumer, is commonly away of other gTLDs and ccTLDs, but the issues are that trust has never been built into them. How many consumers visit .biz sites? Not many. And because big business continues to solidify .com as the STANDARD. I believe that any other TLD which competes, is doomed to live in the basement, in a place where the average consumer is left to wonder about its integrity.

I think this is a good analysis. I would like to think the .biz extension would gain a little value in end users eyes, but with easy to find .us and other cctld alternatives it seems unlikely. An indicator of this is that most of the .biz names listed on the top sales this year are NOT being utilized by large websites/corps. Also MANY on this list are only being used as PPC revenue pages right now..

Thats absolutely absurd.
The .biz TLD has a future, and is rising, although slowly.
Heck its doing better than .eu, which still is in its infancy, and might even have a chance.
.net is suffering in your opinion from ccTLDs?
I'd like to see that backed up.
as for predictions, I prefer facts, so the 'shift' from .biz to .us is a rather interesting *prediction* :)
Your opinion is respected, at least by me, but it is just an opinion, as mine is.
However, I do reguraly sell .biz domains in the high $xxx to low $xxxx range.
.Biz is indeed a strange animal. Loved by searched engines, hated by domainers, yet admired by many lower budget *businesses*.
It does terribly in forums (for reselling) yet pretty well in direct sales with end users.

I might recommend sending them over to me. I'll update NameBio with your sales data and perhaps it will shed a little more light on this "budget business" TLD.

I do not make a habit of sending data of enduser sales anywhere.
If anything, I would have send them to Duke at DNjournal, a person I have dealt with since 2003.
But if it this info might help you, I will consider sending data over to you.

Hi Seeker,
Spade owns Namebio, which is where I got the information I posted in the Thread Starter.
Inclusion of documented pvt sales would greatly increase the search results, which would help us all in the long run.

I totally understand your stance about not broadcasting your sales, I dont either. For several reasons, not the least of which is to protect the buyer.

Perhaps you could share some of your methods for reaching endusers, but I wouldn't blame you for keeping them to yourself.

Thanks for some positive light on this ext.

That's the problem. dotcom only has so many names that can be registered, just as any tld does. And most of them are gone (that have any worth). So where does that leave the rest of the world? Only a very, very, very small percentage of brick and mortar businesses have things setup for the web. Not to mention the regular Joe that may want a site for whatever purpose. What about the new businesses that are popping up everyday? How do they get their online business needs met? This is where the dotcom craze has its limits. It is only viable up to a certain point. It cannot be everything to everybody as there's not enough to go around, this is the major downfall.

I think that sooner rather than later, more and more people will resort to other tlds in a serious way. They will have no choice. I think .biz can be useful in certain situations, and it doesn't hurt that most people already know about the extension. Only time will tell which ones will rise up to be the cream of the [new] crop.

Excellent reasoning, and some objective realism. Good post.

Nay. Then they go to their Home Country's TLD, then .org / .net. .BIZ is a big failure JMO.
