I just browsed through charity ribbons, and saw that the Wikimedia Foundation is not listed there.

Me, I use wikipedia.org for various purposes (including domaining), and I find it one of the most useful projects that assists a big range of people. And because knowledge is the biggest gift we can give, I think it will be useful to add them to the charity ribbon list.

What do you think?

charity: generous actions or donations to aid the poor, ill, or helpless

--

Although Wikipedia/Wikimedia Group is very useful, I noticed the "average" NP Charity Ribbon exists to give aid to people or a group that is actually suffering, or that helps people who are less fortunate.

Right now, we've got:
Tsunami Relief
South Asia Earthquake Relief
Animal Rescue
Third World Education
Child Abuse
Marrow Donor Program
Diabetes
Cancer
Baby Health
Multiple Sclerosis
Breast Cancer
SIDS
Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS)
Alzheimer's
Autism
AIDS/HIV
Save a Life
Cystic Fibrosis
Parkinson's Disease
Special Olympics
Animal Cruelty
Wildlife
9/11/01 :: Never Forget
VA Tech Memorial
Adoption
Cancer Survivorship

Although you could argue that they strive to provide information and education to everyone, Wikimedia, despite the fact that it is a non-profit organization, doesn't seem to fit the mold of the other charity ribbons we offer. :imho:

Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects help provide high quality, up to date information for free to everyone. Knowledge is actually very important to help people that are less fortunate.

Take for example the OLPC project. The project intends to manufacture an inexpensive laptop computer intended to be distributed to children around the world, especially to those in developing countries, to provide them with access to knowledge.

Wikipedia would be a suitable and extremely powerful resource probably beyond compare to anything they had access to before! The Wikimedia Foundation is even teaming up with the project to include local copies of selected articles on the machines.

To quote,
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." (Nelson Mandela, 1918)

Add the Wikipedia/Wikimedia Foundation as a NP$ charity ribbon!

EDIT: And it's kind of ties in/like the Third World Education ribbon we have.

I agree - education is the great equalizer.

Knowledge can help prevent suffering in the first place.

LOL I really never understood the OLPC project. Whilst children are still running around with no pencils or books, we're trying to develop a laptop to help them?

I'm personally not against any charity ribbons not being added -- I didn't think Wikimedia was much like our other charities (many are health/rescue related).

Realistically, if people are willing to give money to a non-profit, (and as they claim) charitable organization, why stop them? B-)
