.com is like sex, pizza, beer etc. It's not going anywhere, will always be dominant. To think that .com with almost 117 million regs, millions of sites is somehow going to take second place to any of these is delusional.
This is what real businesses know. This is why paying a little bit more now, makes financial sense long term.

Based on what I've read a big reason new GTLD's are continuing to come out on the market is because they make the registrars loads of MONEY.
Yes, but at $3.90/year, even if I pay for 10 years before selling, my cost is only $39. I think I can sell knowledge.work for more than $39 in the next 10 years.
The 2nd tier domains don't need to be sold for $x,xxx-$xx,xxx, they can be sold for $xxx and still provide a nice ROI.

Your portfolio of new TLDs is one of the better one's I've seen, I'll say that, and wouldn't surprise me at all if you have 4 or 5 domains in there which could see you spin a profit on their strength alone.
As for some of the other portfolio's I've seen on namepros...... quite a few people burning a hell of a lot of cash on junk.

land.exchange and volunteer.work are nice snags too.
I'm not saying that I'd completely disregard new .tld's, only that only the very best are going to be worth anything.
Of course I'd have volunteer.work in my portfolio, and weekend.cruise, but examples of that quality have been few are far between on namepros thus far!

I've bought plenty of junk myself. I bought too many .exchange domains; the July 2014 launch of .exchange was the first new gTLD that I started investing in... and I bought many I have since regretted. I have been much more selective after that.

one of such researched domains I found yesterday that Idid not register but which was gone within hours was.. jumper.xyz
I think it was a nice one.. with huge keyword searches etc... estibot put it at 1500$ but of course.. that's estibot..
I am still bit tempted by xyz. but in the end having choice between a well thought out (2 word) .com and xyz at same price.. I just probably won't be able to get myself to opt for the xyz.

Possible, but I don't think you would fetch a lot more.
And if you have to proactively find buyers, it becomes an occupation, and it takes time ( = money).
To me 2nd tier is .net or something like that. New extensions are far away from 2nd tier status. I think it's a lot of risk for meager rewards.
Even when the combos make sense (as domain hacks), it's not enough to make a good sale. Because there is no scarcity.
It's funny because domainers always say the same thing: "give it some more time", "it's been only a year", "it's been only two, five years",... you get: time flies. When you look back, the achievements have been limited.

It's funny how all the .work domains you registered are ones that I pre-reg'd too at multiple registrars. That was an exciting time in February. haha I remember you mentioning about local work and Mr. Domains, I wonder though did you get most of these .work with Mr. Domain's "dumb" system?
I had never even heard of Mr. Domain until you mentioned them in your posts.Yes, the .work launch was a fiasco. I got lucky that mrdomain.com didn't understand that the domains were not available and kept trying to register them. When they finally became available, one day after launch, I was the only one with a registrar that was still trying to get them. Thank you mrdomain.com!!!
This is a well thought out use of the GTLD's, but with an annual cost of renewals reaching $9,000 for approx 200 domains, not including what you paid in EAP, you are about $20,000 invested into these above terms after Year 2 renewal.
Say you sell at a 3% sell thru rate on this portfolio you will need to sell 6 domains at $1,500 each just to break even each year. You really need to hit a home run with one, otherwise you are just diluting your quality names, until you are left with a lower tier with a lower sell thru rate. Take into consideration a 3% sell thru rate on a portfolio is very high for GTLD's at this point in the game with the better launches still to come.
This is a very calculated investment.

Just tossing this out there... but as I recall, some people made some pretty good $$$ off of sales of domain names with those extensions.
Granted, they are worth far less now (info has been seeing a bit of a hot streak of late) than before and on the flip side... some people spent some good $$$ to buy those same domain names.
So there are winner and losers.
I am willing to bet the ROI when those extensions first came out where pretty good.
Just a thought.

At the rate the internet is taking over with it "manifest destiny, ninja, guerilla warfare", style, some will be huge. For example, I would never buy my girlfriends birth control from toothpaste.attorney, but in 20 years, it might be the wal-mart of BC due to scarcity.
I was neutral on .top when it first launched. But I am extremely disappointed by the direction this registry has taken with regards to possibly illegal, or at least extremely annoying marketing.. and the fact that the few developed .top web sites actually not parked seem to primarily being used for counterfeit goods being sold from China. Plus, realizing the extremely high renewal fees of .top (almost $30).. so my stance is extremely bearish on this one. You guys are much better to invest in .club, and .work to name a few ngtlds.
Just my final 2 cents on this topic of the bad bad .topp or maybe better to say .flop. They only got a lot of regs because of .50 cents 1st year only registrations in China and the .99 101domain sale for first year only.

I think you are behind the times, so much so that you're a year+ late posting this argument. :D
I guess you have not seen the 100$-5,000$ flips people are doing. Heck I even had x,xxx offers on a couple of my gtlds a week after i reg'd them...

A random opinion about new gTLDs
I find it a battle for our customers to remember our company's name, now image if they had to remember our name + TLD.... That would be double the marketing effort....
And the what happens if a competitor snaps up our .COM ? And we are stuck with a .me, .paris or whatever....
Doesn't make any business sense...
