My question is simple. Why all these new gtld's like .beer or .top?In other words why to say company.top when you have topcompany.com?Finally, i am the one who hates all these tld's?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I am thinking to develop fun and silly sites on .xyz. I think that is probably .xyz's greatest use. I like .xyz because I have a few good names. I really want to do something with them.

I believe it has got to be possible to develop good web sites using .xyz. It's short, generic, popular (for ngtlds), etc. I have just struggled with what kind of sites to develop until recently when I realized that .xyz sites should be more casual and fun.

yes... but maybe my point was not the ratios.. but rather the dollar values

so if in 10 years hotels.xyz is worth loads of money. even if hotels.com is worth 150x more.. that still makes hotels.xyz a good deal and good investment.

whats hotels.xyz worth now anyway (or casino or loans.xyz)

well.. I think so too.. somehow xyz and business do not strike well for me.. when I think of xyz the only good prefix I can think of for it is something like the word MIX.. and its variations.

The way I see the new gtlds is in the same way I see telephone area codes... Let's take New York city as an example.

If you run a business in New York, the best area code to have is 917... 917 is the ".com" of NYC telephone area codes, it's golden because it covers all of the boroughs of New York, people are used to 917... Can you run a business using one of the other 10 + area codes in the New York/New Jersey metro area? Sure.... But 917 is the best.

However not everyone in New York and surrounding area can have a 917 phone number so they increased the number of Area codes... And lots of businesses operate and are successful using those other area codes

The new gtlds are those other "area codes" of the naming space.... ".com" will always be the "917", but in time the new gtlds will be accepted and businesses will operate and be successful using something other than 917.

I'd be willing to bet every penny I own that the domain hotels.com will be worth at least 150 times the value of hotels.xyz in 10 years time.

Replace casino.com with casino.xyz, or loans.com with loans.xyz, or sex.com with sex.xyz if you wish.

Anybody wish to bet against that? Nope..... see, it is that simple.

I don't own any .xyz and don't want any but even if hotels.com is worth 150 times the value of hotels.xyz in 10 years, it's still a good investment. Not many on here can afford hotels.com either.

.com is winning the game till now , but with more than 1000 gTLDs coming to the market , chances are much higher now that .com will loose the batter against few new extensions ( at least within their own niche), this should happen the next few years I guess.....

I do not imagine .COM is a Mega Super powerful that if will beat all the thousands of new gTLDs coming live everyday..while the new extensions are supported by powerful entities like brands, Google, amazon...etc

Google can just give a hint that it will rank certain extensions higher within certain niches, and then you will see what will happen. I mean that Google can play a very strong role in promoting the new gTLDs and change the behavior of internet users if they want to.....

I think the poll is silly. why not have one with the words in the same order?

top.company or topcompany.com.....

it's like saying what's better taxi.cab or cabtaxi.com....

hmm.. so why exactly did org and net also make it

good points... but I'm still thinking if most of us are not .com milionairies and therefore were not able to forsee future accurately before.. we will not get it right again now... with regards to the new extensions... yes in some general way we may be right saying "the new extensions will make it" or "the new extensions will not make it".. but to predict which ones will or won't is like going to casino and rolling dice. equally bad for your cash as a casino trip probably too.

I should keep repeating this to myself and stop registering info and biz extensions. lol
the good news is.. there is nearly nothing left in there either.. as far as single english words go.

Throw the new tld haters a bone, they haven't had a good thread to post their anti-new-tld diatribes in for, like, hours.

Just sayin'.

See, most of the haters just naturally assume you either invest in .coms or you invest in .ngtlds . The point is to invest in GREAT KEYWORDS. So my response to you would be that, if the opportunity arrises to acquire a great keyword in an extension that makes the keyword relevant, you would be foolish NOT to pick the domain up and take a chance.

Gotta go to an appointment now, guess I will hop in my red and white Ford Flex, and hit the road.

Can you provide an example of what you define as a "GREAT KEYWORD" new tld domain from your portfolio, and tell us what you paid for it? That's the only fair way to determine who the foolish one is, what's your best domain?

It is stating the obvious that casino.whatever will be worth at least a bit of money, only it hasn't escaped most of us that the very best domains like this didn't even enter the pool for open registration.

What you consider to be a great keyword others may not.

I offer up a slightly different opinion.

.COMs are obviously the king extension. I will put out the assertion that they have reached critical mass on the classic "S" curve as far as price goes.

Strictly speaking in ROI terms, I will submit the idea that nTLDs (w)(sh)(c)ould offer up a better return per dollar speculated.
*Let me see if I can clarify that statement before I get the hate mail.*

If you were to purchase "Computer (dot) com" for (for example) at a price of 1 million dollars. Hold onto it for 5 years and then sell it again for 2 million dollars. In ROI terms, you have just made twice your money (or 200%).
That is an awesome deal and damn difficult to be able to find almost anywhere. Two things here (1) you need to have 1 million dollars in order to speculate for this trade. (2) You need to find someone with 2 million dollars in order to buy this trade from you. Its not impossible, its done often enough with premium .COM domains.

Lets take this one step further. You buy the keyword "Computer" in a given (decent) nTLD without the premium price tag for $30. You hold onto it for up to 5 years (total of $150 spent). You sell it after 5 years for a paltry sum of $500. You have made 3.33 times your money or (333% ROI).

In terms of ROI, there are greater sums to be made in nTLDs, *AT THE SAME TIME* there are greater risks.
nTLDs are unproven and more speculative then the stalwarts we know today (i.e. .COM, .NET, .ORG...)

So choose your poison on which one suits you better and go with gusto in making things happen.

NOW to answer the question at large,
Why new gtld's exist?
Its the next obvious step in the evolution of domain names. Shifting focus from the left of the dot to the right of the dot. I would even guess that not too far down the road, people will be buying, selling, and trading entire extension the same as they are doing with individual domains right now.

These are just my thoughts.
Cheers

nice!
great example of taking real good advantage of various extensions imo!

a good indication if you're on the right track generally speaking is always to look at how long a domain name would last on market if you did NOT take it.. I am sure in your examples, that would not be long.

no more than qty.biz I registered few mins ago would last long on market.

as newbie, I often go by that too. for the fun of it (although in the end its no fun at all for me) i write some potential registration candidates often after long researches and keep track if they are gone.. and lo behold many go within hours or a day.

I really like some of those, but if wouldn't be impertinent for me to say so, what with opinions being subjective...... you can in a broad sense REALLY tell the difference in quality between the premium and the rest.

I mean.... weekend.cruise, car.exchange, etc, are good examples of the small number of new TLDs which I think could see a good ROI one day. But just those two examples alone cost you $440 to register already.

There are some good examples at lower price points, vet.direct is a nice one, for a vet directory or one of those paid q&a sites (e.g. help my dog is really ill, I need a vet to give me advice for $20), or even a store for vet meds / supplies./

There are other examples that I just don't understand the attraction to, e.g. knowledge.work

There are 1000 new TLDs according to somebody up thread, where is knowledge.work going to rank in order of most desirable to somebody who really wants a knowledge domain?

knowledge.academy
knowledge.club
knowledge.center
knowledge.expert
knowledge.foundation
knowledge.careers
knowledge.guru
knowledge.institute

etc, etc, etc...... don't you think investing so much in mediocre TLDs is a huge risk solely on the basis that it will be a buyers market, with every generic having hundreds of options, attached to hundreds of domainers who are all looking to recoup their investment?

.com is like sex, pizza, beer etc. It's not going anywhere, will always be dominant. To think that .com with almost 117 million regs, millions of sites is somehow going to take second place to any of these is delusional.

This is what real businesses know. This is why paying a little bit more now, makes financial sense long term.

GREAT INFO! Love that pic and the stats it displays.

Based on what I've read a big reason new GTLD's are continuing to come out on the market is because they make the registrars loads of MONEY.

Yes, but at $3.90/year, even if I pay for 10 years before selling, my cost is only $39. I think I can sell knowledge.work for more than $39 in the next 10 years.

The 2nd tier domains don't need to be sold for $x,xxx-$xx,xxx, they can be sold for $xxx and still provide a nice ROI.

Your portfolio of new TLDs is one of the better one's I've seen, I'll say that, and wouldn't surprise me at all if you have 4 or 5 domains in there which could see you spin a profit on their strength alone.

As for some of the other portfolio's I've seen on namepros...... quite a few people burning a hell of a lot of cash on junk.

land.exchange and volunteer.work are nice snags too.

I'm not saying that I'd completely disregard new .tld's, only that only the very best are going to be worth anything.

Of course I'd have volunteer.work in my portfolio, and weekend.cruise, but examples of that quality have been few are far between on namepros thus far!

I've bought plenty of junk myself. I bought too many .exchange domains; the July 2014 launch of .exchange was the first new gTLD that I started investing in... and I bought many I have since regretted. I have been much more selective after that.

one of such researched domains I found yesterday that Idid not register but which was gone within hours was.. jumper.xyz

I think it was a nice one.. with huge keyword searches etc... estibot put it at 1500$ but of course.. that's estibot..

I am still bit tempted by xyz. but in the end having choice between a well thought out (2 word) .com and xyz at same price.. I just probably won't be able to get myself to opt for the xyz.

sorry xyz. it is not that you suck. well maybe just a bit.

Possible, but I don't think you would fetch a lot more.
And if you have to proactively find buyers, it becomes an occupation, and it takes time ( = money).

To me 2nd tier is .net or something like that. New extensions are far away from 2nd tier status. I think it's a lot of risk for meager rewards.

Even when the combos make sense (as domain hacks), it's not enough to make a good sale. Because there is no scarcity.

It's funny because domainers always say the same thing: "give it some more time", "it's been only a year", "it's been only two, five years",... you get: time flies. When you look back, the achievements have been limited.

and two more I just had to remove from my list cause they got registered within hours.. for anyone who cares..

owned.io (35$ a year.. ouch)
emos.biz

I am a newbie, so for me it is not of no use to keep track of what does and does not get registered. this way I know what is popular and good to register in future.
:)

It's funny how all the .work domains you registered are ones that I pre-reg'd too at multiple registrars. That was an exciting time in February. haha I remember you mentioning about local work and Mr. Domains, I wonder though did you get most of these .work with Mr. Domain's "dumb" system? :) I had never even heard of Mr. Domain until you mentioned them in your posts.

Yes, the .work launch was a fiasco. I got lucky that mrdomain.com didn't understand that the domains were not available and kept trying to register them. When they finally became available, one day after launch, I was the only one with a registrar that was still trying to get them. Thank you mrdomain.com!!!
