Why do people always refer to the amount of Google results?

When people try to appraise a domain, or request for one... they always seem to include the amount of Google results with the word in their domain. I don't understand this... why is this important? If there's one thing that is important, it's how much your word actually gets searched each month (you can find this when looking at Google Adwords). And if there's a huge amount of results - wouldn't it be more difficult to reach the top of a search ranking?

A) 100 million results, with 30,000 searches a month.
B) 10 million results, with 100,000 searches a month.

Which is the better option - A or B?

I would surely take B.

These stats are used to show how common or "popular" a term is. You're correct though, more Google results equates to more competition.

you try to mix seo+domaining together?

SEO
A) 100 million results, with 30,000 searches a month. (hard to rank and low traffic)
B) 10 million results, with 100,000 searches a month. (easy to rank and great traffic)

Domaining (care only searches; assuming searches equal to type in)
A) 100 million results, with 30,000 searches a month. (30,000 possible direct type in)
B) 10 million results, with 100,000 searches a month. (100,000 possible direct type in)

Why is it harder to rank for the term with less results? I thought the less results, the easier to rank. extreme example: if zero results, then you put that term in your page and boom - you're the only result!

Sorry wrong information, my mind must be thinking of something while I am writing.

Thanks -NC- for pointing out. Cheers

Part of the appeal of having a domain with high Google search results is that you can tell how often the term is used on indexed sites. Some domain buyers would rather purchase a two or three word term that they like the sound of, rather than buying for traffic, searches or whatever.

Phrases like:
Just Right
Happy Now
Please Continue
All Done

might not get a lot of searches, but have value because they are used often in everyday life.

for me, the phrase "xx,xxx, xxx results in google" has been so overused to try to sell bad domains it's become a turn off. if it's a common phrase i'll recognize it, if not then i'm probably not interested, no matter how many times it appears.

really common phrases are great, otherwise i prefer low google results (with high searches).

it's popularity and google brings traffic/visitors to sites.

a. is good for content-based, blog, forum sites.
b. is good for search-based sites.

The relevance of Google Results matters more than the numbers. You can have huge Google results with no use, like parts of a sentence.

In the example below you can't really pick and option because you don't know what the search terms are.

I would rather have a popular financial term with say 100 Word Tracker, than a term with 1000 Word Tracker on a topic that is not easily monetized.

Great thoughts friends, How about a gambling related three word generic domain with 230/day Word Tracker searches..

Yeah, that would be a winner. Any three word domain with a 230/Word Tracker is impressive.

High Google results = more potential end users.

High search frequency = more traffic and revenue.

Which number is more important depends on what your plans are for the domain, although people usually put more weight on search frequency.

I agree.

I will take the search frequency any day.

Here is an example or the problem with Google Results only.

SoExciting.com -

- Results 1 - 10 of about 3,620,000 for "so exciting".

The problem is when you have Google results that are not relevant.

It depends what the term itself. It if is some kind of financial/real estate related term, or other high demand term the lower Word Tracker you can get away with.

I have a 28 Letter, 3 Word Mortgage Related .NET that gets good traffic and clicks with a 75 Word Tracker.
