To me Mike Mann is my idol in domaining. I jump into domaining because from the history of him http://ww.cnet.com/news/meet-the-mann-who-registered-14962-domains-in-24-hours/
I have been following his twitter, fb and reading his posts. I think Mike Mann full of ego's but to me his nice guy. He owns pretty much value domains like domainmarket.com, seo.com, phone.com, happybirthday.com and others. I might think he won't sell those domains for cheap atleast 1 Million dollar!

From what I've learned from history of him, he build a domain portfolio with a .com and no new gtlds. He always said .com is the king!

To be successful in domaining you need a role model/icon. So who's your idol in domaining?

Rick Schwartz. The man is a domain legend. And Ali zandi's going to be one to watch over the next couple of years, a true inspiration to us beginners.

I have no idols.

Some of my role models (in no particular order):
George Verdugo (personality, generosity, accomplishments / business models)
Luke Webster (personality, integrity, accomplishments / ambition)
Rob Monster (integrity, accomplishments, discretion, business insights)
Michael Cyger (personality, accomplishments, time / energy management)
Joe Alagna (business insights, accomplishments, vision for future)
Angela St. Julien (generosity, integrity, personality, enthusiasm)
Jahfree (personality, creativity, business insights, accomplishments at young age)

my advice, don't idolize anybody

you can admire, appreciate, acknowledge one's accomplishments or even agree with their philosophy

but when you start idol worshiping, those rose colored glasses can keep you from seeing things clearly.

having a role model or a mentor is much different.

imo....

No, I won't confused... I don't get why you would say that.

Looking at an idol from afar, you really don't know what the person is like.
Did they win by cheating or by superior business acumen?

By utilizing roles models, who (possibly) you can know better than idols, you get real insights.
You can learn from their business ideas and specific tactics.
Not just the gloss of public relations or publicity.
