I am asking, no exactly for san francisco, but in general.
I found that where 2 or more words are togheter, usually is better to divide it using the -, because its easie to read fast and indetify the phrase or words, but i don't know if its the same for appraisals.

My mother owns a few very HOT domains, all with the -, but the phrase is divided by words correctly and all domains are words highly searched on Google (According https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal ).

Is just if she owns something like:

california-real-estate.us that if you search in google tool, have 2,5 million searches per month.

What do you think?

Also, any special condition to sell .us domains?

Thanks in advance.

I am a big fan of keyword hyphenated domains. Hyphenated domains work best when it is 1 well placed hyphen separating keywords. But, all things equal you are better off with the non hyphenated version if available.

Both will perform the same SEO wise, but the non hyphenated version is likely to get more type in traffic as well as less confusion (some people forgot the hyphen).

Hi bmugford

I understand, but imagine this:

california-real-estate.us

against:

californiarealestate.us

I guess the first one is better since its easier to understand. I am right?

For selling this kind of domains. The ones with the - could be sold fine if the keywords are strong i guess. Like the california-real-estate.us which have 2 million searches per month according to Google.

^^^ I agree with you that hyphenated domains are easy to read than gathered words but think in other way that simple domains are easy to type than hyphenated domains as i like to read hyphenated but i like to type without hyphens :)

I'd go in for sanfrancisco.com with my eyes closed....

To be more specific, non-hyphenated domain names rule any day over hyphenated ones...

Non-hyphenated names are generally recommended, but hyphenated names are better for SEO.

Change the capitalization to CaliforniaRealEstate.us and it is perfectly readable.

I don't know what SE you are referring to, but it's certainly not Google.

I think there once was a time, back when dinosaurs and Palm pilots were current, that the hyphen did enhance SEO. I agree with most others who say that, in general, hyphens are inferior. But they often make a very nice workaround when the unhyhenated version is unavailable or too expensive. And there are a fair number of end users who actually have hyphens in their company name.

Also e-book is almost as good as ebook (but still inferior) because many people may normally use a hyphen when they type that phrase.
San-Francisco falls way short, as nobody hyphenates San Francisco.

Don't have time to search, but i would guess that ex-boyfriend, ex-wife, non-caffeinated and domains with prefixes like that are at the top of the hyhen heirarchy.

stick with no hyphen .com

Generally, hyphenated is under 1% value of non-hyphenated, .us is under 1% value of .com. So california-real-estate.us is under 1% of 1% value of CaliforniaRealEstate.com

In general and in my opinion and experience, domains without hyphens are better/worth more that those with hyphens.

But california-real-estate.us has 2.5M searches? No, what did you use? I used the Google Kyewords Tool and even with "broad search" there is nothing to measure. Ok, you must be using "california real estate" which is 2,240,000 with broad search. An exact search is less, 18,100.

From what I have seen, domains with hyphens do have a small SEO advantage. Google will match a search phrase like "california real estate" for a domain like californiarealestate.us or "california-real-estate.us", but it will not easily match words INSIDE a domain without hyphens. But when a domain has hyphens, they are treated like spaces, so Google can do an inexact match on the keywords in the domain. Google won't try to find "realestate" inside of californiarealestate.us from what I have seen.

But the SEO value of domains really is not a big consideration unless you are parking domains. In parking you need every bit of advantage since you don't have much to work with. But when you have a web site you can optimize it and easily crush any parked page using the same keywords.

I like hyphenated domains, but I do a lot of domain parking and don't have high hopes for selling them unless they are doing well while parked.

If you are concerned about the way domains without hyphens look, I would learn about the SHIFT key and you can make your domains more attractive like this: CaliforniaRealEstate.us :)

It's hardly something to argue about.

All my domains with hyphens are higher in search engine ranks than their non-hyphenated counter-parts.

Guess it depends on the domain.

I agree. It can depend on the domain and even the domainer. Hyphenated names can rank as high or even higher that its non-hyphenated counterpart.

It can also depend upon availability. If the non-hyphenated version was available, I would pick that up first. However, if both were available, I would get both :tu:

Without any hyphens, it would be much easier to let people know verbally too. And much easier to remember. Just straight away dot com. :) Just my 2cents.
