Which domain would you buy?

Hi,

I´ve spent the last 2 days here, read a lot of threads but still struggle to value domains.

let me build an example with google keyword tool data and assume that .com is available and they have no backlinks:

1. golfputtingtips.com
2400 searches, medium competition, $0,45\click

what I think:
-- domain is a bit too long
-- 3 words
-- not brandable
-- no direct commercial usage
-- low CPC
++ targeted visitors
++ 2400 searches\month
++ easy to create content

2. buygolfshoes.com
260 searches, high competition, $0,60\click

what I think:
++ targeting people with intention to buy -> make money with it -> higher domain value
++ micro niche: golf -> shoes
-- 260 searches per month isn't that much.
-- domain looks stupid and spammy with the word "buy" in it
-- hard to rank in serps
-- low CPC

3. golfschool.com
1300 searches, high competition, $5,78\click

what I think:
++ can be sold to end user
++ high CPC
++ average search volume
-- ?

4. golfgod.com
50 searches, low competition, $0,39\click

what I think:
++ brandable
++ I love alliterations
-- nobody searches for it
-- hard to sell?

So I`m looking forward to your feedback. I`d go with 3. golfschool but I'm curious what you think about it.
Please add positive and negative aspects for these examples if I am missing something here.

- which domain would you buy if any and what would you do with it?

- can you estimate a value for these example domains?

- what`s your required minimum search volume to buy?

- does it make a difference if the domain has never been registered or dropped and is available again?

Thanks a lot for your input
Gerald

Hello,

Personally, I would also go for #3 - Golfschool.

Not the perfect name for branding a business, but apart from that, way better that the competition, IMO.

Not even close....

GolfSchool.com

It'll probably cost 25K minimum though.

Are the others worth anything or is this a waste of money?

GolfPuttingTips.com would suffice if you're actually planning on building a site on that topic.

As an investment hoping to resell it, I wouldn't buy it.

golf school all the way . . .

I like golfschool.com (if you can afford)

I'd also suggest you add an other important indicator (probably more important than the search volume): how many people do advertise on Adwords. It's not proportional to CPC.

Hi,

- what`s your required minimum search volume to buy?

- does it make a difference if the domain has never been registered or dropped and is available again?

There isn't really a black and white rule for domains. Search volume is great but it's not the holy grail. The longer the domain is, the less I put value into it. Ever since Google reduced the EMD (exact match domain) bonus there's been a shift in popularity to shorter, more brandable domains.

I consider GolfSchool.com a premium domain even though it only has 1,300 searches. LearnGolf.com at 720 searches is another example. Both have fewer searches than GolfPuttingTips.com but are exponentially better investments. They're shorter and can encompass all aspects of learning golf while GolfPuttingTips.com is limited to only putting and is also redundant since PuttingTips.com still implies golf....

If a domain has never been registered there is probably a reason... Emerging technology or new trend domains are a different story.

Is there any other way to check this except counting the listed ad results on the serps?

I found a term which has a rough 400 searches and medium CPC + advertisers bidding on it but the exact match domain has never been registered. I`m wondering that nobody took that domain yet?!

Since I worked years with SEO and organic traffic I put high value on monthly search volume but it seems that it's not a big factor in domaining.

What do you think about buy/order/purchase[insertkeyword].com domains? I have a feeling that this is nothing a domainer is interested?

Thanks so far for your great infos. I really appreciate your help here.

You can do what Ali Zandi did with app design school Portfolio. Basically he bought bunch of domains related to app design, auctioned it off as a portfolio on Flippa with premium features and sold it for 15k+. You can simply do the same with golf. Best of luck!

you can use semrush or spyfu to find the adwords activity for a keyword

I too have found some never registered (or dropped) keyword domains which look somehow attractive. For me it's a mystery as why nobody is registering them. (I am not talking of long keywords with dashes, but short and reasonably attractive domains.)
