Question Regarding KeyWord Research

Hello,

I would like some clarification on a topic that has me frustrated. I apologize in advance if this is a question that some of you have taken the time to answer in a previous posting. But to those that take the time to answer this question this time around, I truly appreciate it.

I often review posings within the threads of NP's regarding "exact google search is xxx", "Average CPC is xxx", "High competition", etc.

I assume that the ideal domaining situation would be to identify a highly searched exact keyword or phrase, high CPC return, and low competition. Of course I understand that those type of domains are extremely difficult to find these days. However, what is a decent expectation?

Example 1: Is a five-word phrase, with $1.72 average CPC, with average competition, and 12,000 monthly exact searches that is available in the .com extension worth looking at?

Example 2: Is a three-word phrase, with $4.72 average CPC, with high search competition, and 260 monthly exact searches that is available in the .com extension worth looking at? I would tend to think that initially an experienced domainer would see the low exact monthly searches and say no. But, looking at the $4.72 average CPC, I have the following thought. If only 10 of the 260 average landed on a site like this and happened to click an add and say the CPC payout is $3 per click an assumption could be made that that particular domain would gross an average of $30 a month? A domainer that has "X" sites like this could earn some good passive income.

So if someone could answer the following for me:

What is a decent "exact monthly search" that would catch your eye? I realize the hight the number, the better. But, using my example above (12,000 exact). Is this considered decent.

What is a decent situation? High exact search, Low Competition, High CPC?

There are so many variables. I hope my thread does not confuse anyone and that someone in here knows what I am trying to ask. But any input to relieve my frustration is appreciated.

Thanks,

Spearseven:(

I sure wouldn't get too excited about 12,000 unless it was also a common phrase or slightly brandable. The other option that would make me consider is if I had already spent thousands of dollars on PPC campaigns in that niche and I knew for a fact that it was a keyword that converted well. Often the best converting keywords are not the same ones that domainers go gaga over, but rather the long tail specific 'buy' keywords. Your really not going to know these unless you have been testing thoroughly with PPC campaigns.

My sights these days are upwards of 100,000 but this includes .net and .org's.

You can certainly make money from domains with 12,000 exact searches, but your chances of doing so are not that great.

Intheflow,

Intheflow,

Thank you for taking the time giving me some insight. When you first started out in the domaining world did you focus on exact keyword search = ing 100,000 or is that where you focus now. I have researched, looked and tried to determine just what a "good" number to look at would be? Another question I often am puzzled by is when someone says googe results in " quotations" is "XXX". "XXX" is usually a very high number. Why is that so important? To me, it merely demonstrates the competitiveness of the key word/phrase. Am I off base in my thought process?

Another thing that boggles my mind: I can match a keyword with high exact results with another keyword with high search results. But when put together do not make sense and do not collectively have high results, rather they (together) are low becasue an average person searching the net would not put them together. ie. money + flowers. Individually they will have extremely high exact search results. Put together they will have low to nothing as they are not two words searched together. Damn, one day I hope this finally clicks in my head and I understand the concept.

Anyway, thanks again for your input!

Anyone else out there in NP land want to try to further confuse me?
