This may not be the proper place to ask this question but where are the best/cheapest resellers or registrars to transfer away from GD?

Love,
Marcia

Hi Marcia,

You haven't given us much to go on. Best/Cheapest is an oxymoron. Also how many domains are we talking about?

I had your dilemma a couple of years ago. After much research and elimination I chose Dynadot, and I see a few other people have suggested that also. I haven't regretted that decision as a Super Bulk customer.

Why did I not choose NameCheap? Because they use eNom's nameservers, and if you have any health/drugs related domains, they could be taken away from you in a whim, because of the relationship eNom has with a self appointed health/drug czar, whose name I just cannot recall at the moment. Totally illegal in my opinion.

I think I read that Name.com just got taken over by the owner of eNom. They say they will keep them separate, but how long will it be before they adopt the same policies related to health/drug related domains.

Personally, I recommend Dynadot. Their Control Panel needs a small learning curve after using GoDaddy, but it can do almost as much as the GoDaddy Control Panel (which I like a lot). I'm talking about the Control Panel, not the GoDaddy Checkout (which I dislike intensely).

You will of course have to curb your addiction to coupon codes. Dynadot does usually issue a coupon code for the month, but it isn't always the one you might be looking for.

Some of us despise always having to look for coupon codes to get the best price!! :) Dynadot applies the discount automatically as soon as you spend the amount required.

I actively develop my sites and find their user interface extremely friendly for my needs.

LegitScript, I think.

Marcia, why are you wanting to move out of Godaddy? Perhaps some specific reasoning could helps us recommend a better registrar for you.

Personally I don't trust godaddy, but they're great for $1 and $3 domains. Normally my $1 domains get moved out of there 61 days after registration because I simply don't trust them, but I do have a few I've left sitting at Godaddy that are totally unused and awaiting development or resale.

I would have recommended Name.com but like Stub said they were bought out by Enom. I won't be moving domains out unless something happens, but I'm anxious to see how everything shakes out before I continue moving names to Name.com. Based on past experience, and the new promise to let Name.com continue operating as they have been, they should still be a safe option and a good choice.

Dynadot is a great option, as mentioned.

NameSilo is a new one with low prices and free privacy that I'm starting to like more and more. I have a few low priority domains there without any problems whatsoever.

Internet.bs used to be one I recommended a ton. But first they had paypal, then they lost paypal, and now there's a whole slew of payment options to use. My bank always seems to give me some kind of "International Processing Fee" for buying there, and Ive used a few different cards. It amounts to roughly 35 cents for every 20 bucks spent. If you don't get that fee they're great, and I still keep domains there even with the fee, but I think I'll start using NameSilo instead.

Moniker is another one I used to recommend many years ago, but they've been bought and sold a few times and have gone downhill with both support and also technical errors like not being able to unlock domains, trouble renewing domains, Moniker having problems contacting the registry, and screwups with their whois privacy. I have almost all of my domains out of moniker and don't recommend them any longer.

Namecheap is decent enough, they used to be pretty cheap. They're not that cheap anymore, plus they're an Enom reseller and don't have their own backend yet (which has been under development for quite some time I believe) and there are other better options. I'm slowly moving all my namecheap domains out of there now.

Fabulous is where I keep all my high value domains that I want to keep for a long time. Great security options. I have an account with $8.99 .com pricing which is great, but the regular retail pricing is $29.95 which isn't so great if you don't qualify for a cheaper account.

I would encourage you to stick with the devil you know rather than the devil you don't. I have had names with lots of registers and have had to move them on over and over just to keep them as these lesser known registers bite the dust and often make transfers near impossible. The key is when you get the promotion codes use them renew domains are always going to be retail.

Register.com definately. The most secure domain registrar in the web. Even legit owners have problems with transfer domains out :)
But i like them, really.

To move names, I would also suggest Dynadot or Name.com

Namecheap Gets My Vote

I would go with namecheap though as stated above -- not as cheap as they once was -- but then again -- what is:hehe:

Have to agree with this. Unless you are moving from them for moral reasons, it's hard to beat the exposure they give you, if trying to sell your names, through their premium listings and auctions. If you're concerned about price, and have enough domains to justify the cost, spring for the domain discount club. It easily pays for itself without having to search for codes, even if you only have a hundred names with them. A tdnam account is included in the price, saving you a few bucks each year on that as well. If you are determined to move, I would agree with either dynadot or fabulous.

my 2 cents.

You must be the "flying dutchman" :) Are they still charging $30 for registrations?

If you are ready to transfer quite soon, NameCheap is having a $3.99 transfer special on 22nd Jan and it's for up to 50 domains per person! I know I'm going to be transferring a fair few ;)

I hope Namecheap will not put special restrictions on transfers like before.

Last Thanksgiving promo, they only allowed Namecheap-virgin domains to be transferred using their Black Friday discounts.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for as far as features. Do you need free DNS or privacy?

I actually like the Enom interface and enjoy low reseller prices but I am not sure how hard it is to get the lowest prices now. Plus I have been hearing rumblings about them here lately. The DNS service is good but the domain privacy is expensive.

Name.com is pretty good if you are looking for free domain privacy which is normally available with a coupon code you can find here at NP. Fairly cheap registration price. Havent used their DNS yet.

Namecheap is a good option if you need free dns and privacy. Provided free with transfers. Pretty low reg prices.

I havent tried Namesilo yet, but after looking at their website, it looks to be worth a try at the prices being offered and free dns and privacy.

I personally like to autorenew most of my domains. And this is not that great with Godaddy because you always have to use coupon codes to get the best prices. I used to have an account rep do this for me and apply the lowest rate but there were too many misses for my liking and paying the full retail price. And also the risk of losing your domain after 2 weeks expiration is just too much when not using autorenew.

Will discover it very soon (for renewal) :)

Anywhere! Nowadays most registrars have almost the same price for domain registration. I'd suggest you to go to those who offer better support.

Not true, there are several registrars with prices lower than leading registrars like GoDaddy and Namecheap. Internetbs.net for instance has my vote, currently .com are $8.49, .net are $7.75 no coupon code needed and all extensions include free privacy forever. It's an ICAAN accredited registrar and based in the Bahamas, which is a healthy independent jurisdiction.
