Advertiser - so how much for sole advertising of New York? .......listen I have a close friend in New Jersey - I know he would want in - can you hold both spots till Monday???

(AllI was looking was 9 local experts (sorry George!!) to blog once week for free providing mountains of fresh content over the year in return for exposure of their business!!!!)

Yes, I can do both spots.

Advertiser - what would it cost us for New York and New Jersey in all categories??!!!!

Well, we havent finilised our pricing points and it is a little complicated given that the New York spot is more expensive than the Kansas spot for example, so many different factors need to be taken into account, but obviously we are a strong believer in multiple spot discounts Sir.......

Advertiser - Ok - I will get back to you on Momday morning.........

You are heading into right direction.
Most serious business related sites do NOT have any ads like Google or Yahoo.
I have few domains I am developing right now and they will not have any such ads.
We all should try to get ads directly from advertisers.

How did you get initial contact?

As any new business starting from scratch- you will be contacting them - but i was not even contacting them to advertise - i had contacted a guy a week earlier with an initial email asking if he was prepared to act as an expert on my site and win relationships with potential clients through answering questions put to them by viewers in return for fresh quality content....

That led to a couple of calls during which timeI showed him my ad revenue model and he was so impressed by it - it is a unique system - that he wanted to grab the NY and NJ territory in all categories immediately - I told him he would have to wait till we confirmed our pricing formulas as right now I was just contacting him as as expert - but would take the weekend to put together a deal that would take everything into account when we do start going after advertisers........ and that I promised him first shout at both states......

what I am trying to say is that the level of interest/panic!! in his voice to get on board was very healthy sounding!!!!! and bodes well and boosts my confidence that my concept works.......I do still need the help of certain outside experts - they know who they are - and am still employing a PPC campaign manager, but it looks like I will be doing all my own selling - I thought I was a crap salesperson, but after I got my first six experts (three to go) I have my shpiel down to a pleasant patter and cant wait.....

Its definately a numbers game , but there are definately numbers!!!

But it helps a million % if you have a UNIQUE angle to hit the advertiser from!!

So whilst I have sold nothing yet, he phoned me on Friday, not the other way round, he asked me about across the board pricing for two statesd , not the other way round...to me those are all good leading indicators....

As your PPC Campaign Manager will confirm, we did it for two years with zero sales force (just a customer service team).

And as you see by this one advertiser conversation, this concept is so easily understood by our advertiser base that once we launch it - it will be huge. It will work well for you.

Localexperts, thanks for sharing your insights and experience. A simple but powerful concept. I imagine that this may work even better as the economy slows and businesses/professionals look for new revenue sources to survive the downturn.

Also, its pretty clear that customers are switching to online sources as oil prices soar and the credit crunch bites to save money any way possible. That is certainly the case in the UK where gas has hit about $12 a gallon!
