PayPal has been trouble-free for me but others may have had different experiences.

No. It is not safe. You could wake up the next morning with a reversal and Bum! Paypal has no protection for "digital" products. For your valuable domains, you should use an escrow service.

An Escrow service is the safest way to conduct business for both buyer and seller, however even with escrow.com there are potential flaws.

I prefer Paypal for sales under $100, and Paypal + Escrow for sales $100 or more. It's not 100% foolproof, but I've never had problems. B-)

I'm mostly using PayPal and have done so into the mid $x.xxx range. Which doesn't get to say that it's the ultimate service, i just like the convenience of it. I usually wait til the funds have cleared into my bank account and have detailed emails with the buyer acknowledging all details of the transaction, including money sent, domain transfer records, DNS changes, screen shots, etc. Just the usual stuff that goes into my virtual "domains" backup folder. Is it fail safe? not by a long shot, but if you do your homework and document everything, you get a pretty good idea of whether someone is actually going to complete a sale or is going to hit you with a charge back - in which case, you have detailed records that any charge back was a fraud attempt.

I have personally found that Escrow is the best method when transfering high value domains.

PayPal does have its uses but as (etab) mentioned, anything over $100 shouldn't really be put through your PayPal account.

I dont think you actually mentioned your Domain name value, but again depending on how much it is worth, use your best judgement. You may actually want to have a written contract if its of particually high value.

I'd say quite a few.

Is it improper to ask the buyer to wait the time required
for the payment type to clear?
And with Paypal, is there a set amount of days after payment is
sent for the buyer to initiate a chargeback?

I've never had any major problems with Paypal on smaller amounts (less than 500$) - and had started accepting some low x,xxx $ amounts from trusted people. But - After hearing about a few recent nightmares - I'd say thats a bad idea now. I've heard of a few people's paypal accounts being terminated for no reason and they'll hold ALL funds for 180 days before they'll allow you to withdraw it. The only possible reasons were these folks had received several low x,xxx $ amounts back to back in the same month .....

I'll be going back to Escrow.com and/or will arrange some escrow transfers through other companies soon because of this. It's not worth the risk of them holding your working capital for half a year just because they can.

How does the buyer know if he will really get the domain when using PayPal?
