When I was looking for a cheap webhosting company, I found alot of bad stuff about 1and1. I bought the hosting anyway. :]
I'd just like to know why all the bad reviews? I personally don't need craploads of space. I got plently. and plenty of tools. no downtime yet.

Anyone else use them? who doesn't like them? why?

from what i've read a while ago, their support isn't that great and have been known to continually charge your credit card, not let you move domains out, and that kind of stuff.

I believe their competitors do :D.
Seriously they just quite big and have either good as bad ones reviews.

I've heard various explanations about them, the worst seem to be the downtime and credit card charge problems. Obviously, you're going to hear more when they are such a large company.

All I can say is give it time. You can't tell a good or bad host right away in many instances. How long have you been with them?

This is all true. They're big so you're gonna hear lots of bad stuff i suppose.

I've only had them for about a month honestly :/ Man, how can they keep charging people?

I think in mosts cases people have more trouble getting away. ;)

They keep getting away with the charges because there's no real way to get them back. A $100 charge is not going to be worth paying legal fees for. But, that's why you don't sign up for a yearly (or more) package. I don't believe that they do this purposely, but this is a common complaint that I have seen with them.

As far as I know they are the biggest web hosting company in the UK region. Not sure. Have heard different things of them as good as bad ones.

"I think in mosts cases people have more trouble getting away."

That's exactly what I was going to say. Most complaints I see are about the exit policies.

I'm assuming that the folks over at SearchGuild.com aren't exactly thrilled about them since they are displaying the following message on their homepage:

We apologise to half a country (UK) who can't see SearchGuild. This is because 1and1 are a rubbish webhost who haven't responded to my emails. And yes, I know the half a country won't read this but I feel much better!

I've used them for over 2 years now without a problem (the business package appx $9.00 per month)...loads of space, email accounts, etc..etc. and I honestly can't really say that I have any compliants. I've called customer service a few times and spoke to someone from another country/planet...but my questions (looking back) were quite noobish anyways.

So, if it means anything...no real complaints here...2 years and counting.

Any company has both negative and positive reviews. It's all right. Only your personal experience may tell you what the company is. When I started to choose the company that I'm with right now (Webhostingbuzz.com) and read also very many different feedbacks but being only personally with them, may say that they are good in provoding their services.

if you are small, they are fine

ive been with them for 5+ years in the US here..

what they have done to me is, on the monthly plan, they will billwhatever they want
sometimes they bill me 2months ahead, sometimes 3months, ect..

sometimes they will skip a month, then bill me for last month, this month, then next month in the same charge.

thats what folks are talking about i think..

but i have enought left on my credit card, so i dont care about a little $10 x 3 billing issue..

For me, it makes sense. Sometimes, i got frustrated with their billing method.
Yet, their customer service is fine in terms of time replying, eg: I emailed them around 10h30 on 31 Dec, then they got back to me after 15 minutes. A day later, I emailed to them again due to another concern, they replied my questions after 10, then I sent it back. Finally, i got the answer after 10 minutes. Not bad for new year's eve, right ?

You must be lucky. Very lucky :) Maybe they worked just on the new year eve :D Their support is the saddest, slowest and most horrible one that you can ever find. Like CrazyTech said, buying a new account is very easy but to get rid of it is a big pain! They do have frequent downtimes.

If you are just going for a basic shared hosting there are quiet a lot of better options that you can look at.

They've been around for 20 years now, so they must be doing something right.

http://www.checkdomain.com/cgi-bin/checkdomain.pl?domain=1and1.com

Its registered on 1997 :)

Although 1and1 should be good in their service. Actually there are always comflicts with good and bad reviews for different hosting service providers. And mostly you will learn the bad, because good's doesn't come out so fast from the clients :p
