What's the purpose of backordering at Afternic?

What's the purpose of backordering at Afternic? These names, if backordered, goes to a public auction and not a private auction. So, what's the point of backordering?

For domains at registrars that don't have deals with snap/nj/pool/etc. It is about as useful as a Godaddy backorder, which consequently is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

Lets say I am interested in a domain at Afternic. If I do not backorder the domain, then will the domain goto auctions even if there's nobody backordering this name?

It has no point at all -- just some quick, easy money to profit off newbies or people unfamiliar with what their "backorder" entails. I wouldn't even call the service they provide a backorder.
