What is the one domain trend over the years that you most regretted buying into?

I'll start - early on in my investing I saw someone, somewhere (Twitter?) saying that they'd sold a .fr domain, and they said they were making a fortune selling country specific domains only. Being new, I just bought up a slew of .fr domains - that was years ago, long story short that went nowhere, and I quickly let go of that.

Learning lessons are the best. :xf.rolleyes:

btw - if you are new to domaining, some country based tlds sell very well. Not that one.

Buying names that appeal to restaurants. Of all domain buyers, they must the cheapest people around. Glad they have food inspectors or these people are the group most likely to serve you stale food that will kill you.

.uk & .co.uk - been a disaster
I have to agree it's a been a rocky road. I've had a few sales of low-mid £xxx for some .UK names I've picked up though.

It also gave me a chance to write a program to dropcatch .UK names too which was worth it too.

The .co.uk/.UK split was an awful idea though. Just money grabbing and so bad for the space.

As for .me domains I don't regret buying them, I'm in for a long hold on them cause I like 'em

Purchasing various .me domains that seemed appealing. It's nice to have purchases that, if not developed, have potential resale value. Overall, .me domains appear to have lost their appeal, especially compared to other extensions such as .com .

I am surprised more people have not come forward and said they got sucked into Libra - People lost the plot with it - 45 pages on the showcase thread
Probably too busy buying xyz names to match their Libra ones.

That's a shame, I like .me but yes they don't sell quickly that's for sure 😂😩.

What are your top 5 .me domains? Just so I can get an idea of the kinds of names you had that wouldn't sell.
Thanks for asking.

I recently dropped Defending.me, guarding.me, and startsaving.me, which never sold even at very low prices. Wiring.me didn't sell, but that one still to me was worth renewing.
Starloving.me and StopAnnoying.me were purchases on GoDaddy's .me sale. My interest, in terms of sale or developing, is more in the .com versions purchased at the same time.

Thanks for sharing. I'm a fan of .me names I have to admit, but they don't sell well as mentioned. I have clever, cheeky, runner amongst others.

My biggest regret regging registy premium domains that cost $$ 200-800 renewal. Thought I could easily sell them. Though, I sold one of them via outbound.

I like your humour, every time I learn an article when I saw your comment, I smile😊

I only have one - Pinyin.fr because pinyin is an international word I presumed it would be good. I live in hope

You live in delusion.

Pinyin is not an international word and not even related with France.

Besides, there's no such a thing as international word.

Not being rude, but do you mean your choices of .uk and .co.uk have been a disaster?

Oh! I regret registering LIBRA based domains, due to Facebook's launching of Libra cryptocurrency. None were sold. I let them expire.

.net
.org's
I'm glad you said this. Many years ago, when .com, .net, and .org were the big three only available, getting these permutations with the .com made sense. Now, with all the other extensions available, my preference has been to stick with the .coms.

PHYGITAL
I was aware from the very beginning that it sounded weird but I still wanted to test the water and bought a few phygital+keyword.com and phygital.ngtld domains but did not renew any of them.

I got a good lesson for a few bucks.

Great idea for a thread, @Way3 ! Thank you.

At one point I had a number of reg-fee .gdn. The price was right, .gdn for global domain name seemed sensible to me, and you could get great keywords without premium fee or renewal, but the market for them never developed. I only kept 1 or 2 past the first year, and have not had any for years.

I can relate to this.

There was a time when .name domains got really famous and everyone wanted a domain matching their name with the .name or .me tld. I got into the hype and got some of them to eventually realise that it was just a hype that people bought into and the hype died down, so did i let my .name and .me domains go away

Making the mistake back in 1999/2000 that a few members seem to be making today. That is registering domains (good key words) in the lesser extensions. i.e, net.org etc.
Cost me thousands of $$$ over the years.

Oh and may I add buying number domains with the number 4 in them - What an idiot in not realizing why they were available. Ask your Chinese friend

All very old mistakes but they still make my stomach churn
