For the .tv extension to begin to have some success?

Rick Latona is not interested and all the other big players in the industry really laugh off the .tv extension as well.

So, my question is are we all just kidding ourselves or does somebody have a sound reason as to why we spend so much time and $$$ in this perceived area of weakness called Dot.tv.

Its hard to be a leader following others.

The day I stop making sales with .TV is the day I'll reconsider...

So far, that hasn't happened.

And it doesn't look like it will anytime soon either.

Almost EVERY SINGLE DAY, I get offers for my .tv names... I'm thankful I've got some amazing names, but I hunted them down for a reason.. because I know they have value. I don't need any advice of the "big players" on .tv - that's for sure. They may have great advice for other things, but those who shoot down .tv obviously don't know what they're talking about. :)

Think about it - if you wanted to register names in the background with no real attention to yourself on what you were doing... would you want to endorse and announce your strategies? Or would you rather just collect great names in silence, knowing that its just a matter of time before the rest of the world catches on?

So, you can listen to others who found success elsewhere and don't care whether or not you fare well in life..

Or make your own way with research and sound business decisions.

From what I've seen thus far, some of the "big players" have already entered the game. Don't pay attention to what they say so much as what they do (register). Some of the BIGGEST domainers of all time already have their hands in .tv -- don't let the naysayers fool you.

I hope this helps.

Good luck.

RL

I agree 100%

It doesn't really bother me what the "big boys" are doing. I'll keep selling names for 30 - 50x my investments.

Well some good points you made Rhee, a few I am not sure I agree 100 %.
Since I created this forum, the first of its kind dedicated to an extension, let me answer your questions.

First off this is not a cult so I do not think everyone has to be a robot saying .tv great, secondly yes tv.com is permitted to be discussed as it has been long before many of you got here. When .tv on Namepros was 10 people.

We are all not in agreement on development or what is a good name. I see many names here where 10 people will say in a thread, "WOO nice job" "Great Name" I will not be negative or try to rain on someone elses parade, but there are plenty I think I would not want if you pushed it to me for free. I am sure others feel the same.

The comment about slowing down is not so as the traffic to the .tv section has never been higher. Now if you want to say worthwhile, informative, thought provoking threads, I agree.

We all do not agree on premium pricing, now I agree I see where it has helped in acquisition and complaining about it is a waste of time. Verisign does not care what others think about "their company."

Trolling threads or comments are deleted and some say they want to hear them.
I believe the # of people actually interested in development is in the minority. Most think I got a good name how much can I get ?

I agree with you just to focus on your own gameplan. Never care what anyone else thinks I have never understood that.

Many of the top professional domainers are happy sticking with a conservative game plan that works. Investing in .TV is very speculative and they may figure that if it starts to take off they can simply jump on the bandwagon.

The day that Bio.tv stops redirecting to biography.com (which is totally goofy considering they plaster Bio.tv all over their programming), I think you'll see the Rick Latonas of the World start to pay attention.

How did that one slip thru the cracks? Or was it registered way-back?

For your information, I've contacted the owner of pizza(.)tv and he wants about $150K for it.

If someone's interested, just contact him. It would be a pretty good investment IMHO.

It's a shame we are we still having this debate...

Rick S, Rick Latona, Frank, etc... all specialize in what they specialize in. Some domainers have publicly ventured into other territories to diversify, others have done so privately. Some have chosen not to leave their comfort zone because they have found what has proven to work for them and choose not to diversify. But much of what you've read about the early days of domaining can not be duplicated in today's marketplace unless you've got deep pockets or serious investors, so you have to weigh your options and explore other opportunities (explore other extensions, development, etc).

But you have to ask yourself... do you really care what other domainers think about You or Your chosen investments/business models? If so, why?

Over the years, I had plenty of people tell me to get a "real job", even when the first internet bubble burst, they all told me, "I told you so...", but I survived the bubble, and was very happy with my chosen field. While they spend 2-3 hours a day stuck in their cars in traffic, going back and forth to their "real job", I'm analyzing traffic to my websites and launching/tweaking more. Over the years, plenty of domainers have told me to stick with only .com, or only generics, or only traffic domains, etc... but I was happy with the type of domains I was registering/acquiring and the end result has been plenty of cash deals, equity stakes in startups, stock deals in public companies, and some very lucrative flips.

I chose not to listen to anyone else but my gut... if I made any mistakes, it's my own fault, no one else to blame but me... if I tasted success, it wasn't because someone held my hand and led me there... no one is going to draw you a map to where the gold is... no one. Don't hope for it, don't expect it, and don't wait around for it. Do your own research, explore for yourself and keep trying until you've found a little bit of gold. Whatever worked for you, keep trying the same thing and don't give up... and most importantly don't give in to the naysayers, detractors, the trolls, etc.

There are many people that will help you, give you advice, etc... but no one is going to hand you success on a silver platter so don't sit around waiting for that 7-figure payday to materialize out of thin air. I spend everyday on the phone making cold calls, working leads, etc... looking for suitors, partners... networking with people from different levels within the same organization just to get that one golden nugget that leads to a deal. it's hard work but there's no excuse not to work hard if you haven't reached your goals... and I'm nowhere near where I want to be by the time I'm 40. So I work 20 hours a day and ignore the trolls, ignore the negativity, I don't focus on what other domainers think about my investment choices, I don't wait for other domainers to decide that an extension is "worthy" before I stake my claim.

This is a great forum for those who wish to communicate, share and network... the .TV section has its trolls and I simply have them on ignore (even though they choose to reply to me knowing full well I can't read their replies, LOL) and it makes this whole community flow much better. But if this forum is going to be the best resource for .TV, the best community for .TV, the best group of domainers, then we need to stop questioning the validity of the extension, stop complaining about premium renewals (knowing full well we can not change anything and that without premium fees in place, many great domains would not be available for development), we need to derail the derailers, we need to stop feeding the trolls, etc and do something creative to bring up the morale of the domainers in this section before there's a major exodus like what happened in the .mobi section when the trolls/naysayers drove most of the domainers somewhere else and fragmented what was once a vibrant, exciting, informative .mobi community here at namepros.

I truly like coming here everyday, several times a day, but I notice that the .TV section is slowing down... I also notice many lurkers, non-members, etc, checking this section of the forum out, and what is their first impression or lasting impression going to be about .TV? Think about it for a second... I had an associate who is not a domainer come into this section and all he remembered seeing was people complaining about premiums, people trashing the extension and lots of talk about TV.com vs .TV - LOL... it's not that he didn't see all the useful info, he did, it's that he came away with the impression that .TV domainers weren't united, lots of infighting, doubt about the extension, and that the overall mood wasn't "cohesive". This is not an insult directed at NamePros, the .TV section or the mods here... it's a reflection of what some of the users of this section are doing to what is supposed to be the .TV section of namepros. According to the rules of this section: this is a subforum for people who like the .TV extension... so why are we wasting time debating the merits of .TV, letting trolls hang out, and I know this part will piss off many members here... why are we dedicating so many threads and discussions to .TV versus TV.com and highlighting important sales/news for TV.com, etc... when all you are doing is turning away potential investors, future believers, and adopters who might have embraced .TV but were pointed in the direction of TV.com instead? I know plenty of you are heavily invested in TV.com, and I can understand the connection, but this is the .TV forum, correct?

Bottom line: I truly enjoy the networking here, but the energy is fading and it would be great if we could make this a forum to share relevant info, give a morale boost to other likeminded domainers, generate opportunities to collaborate to bring more awareness and adoption to the .TV extension, etc... not to use this forum to troll, complain, doubt, detour, etc...

.TV is an extension that many of us hope will be embraced by the mass market. Ask yourself: what are you doing each day to get more people to be aware that the extension exists? If you're doing nothing and .TV fails for you, you have no one to blame but yourself.

/rant
(did it again... posted more than I wanted to.)

of course some great points you make .... in australia we say 'mobile' or mobile phone' the term cell phone is never used ..... but the term tv is worldwide .... that's the charm of this extension

I really think .tv IS having success, im more than happy how the extension has progressed since i started buying but maybe we all expected different thing.
The way i see it is: Sales numbers & prices are rising year after yr, traffic is increasing, the number of developed sites has jumped a whole lot lately, there is more exposure for sites using .tv's online & on TV than ever & the number of non domainers who know/understand what .tv's are has grown massively.
All that is success to me, not anything amazing but going in right direction.

Im happy at least but maybe its since i bought to hold & develop rather than quick flips. I dont care what anyone else thinks of my domains so why worry if some domainer i dont know dislikes the extension im buying??
My success & failure in domains/webdevelopment will be down to me so having the aproval of some well known domainer wont matter much (unless they want to give me $100,000 for my one main domain that i dislike)

It doesn't matter what some big domainers like frank think about this extension.
All the domainers in this domainer forum can bash .TV extension all they want (although I don't really see any nowadays), but in the end, it's all about the end users that will set the true value. .TV has its share of powerful end users reaching out to many net users (# increasing).
I would've been extremely concerned if the extension was mainly domainer to domainer trading oriented instead of end user oriented.

I think dot TV is truly an end user extension. With huge marketing behind production. The end users best suited for the dot TV would be related to the mergence or marriage of mediums that will grant the consumer an A la Carte experience in digital media.... Broadcast "TV" is a "dino" not a "dyno" as it has been for so long.

My doubts are in the acronym "TV" being used for our viewing description too much longer. The use may change with tech and trends (ie:telephone to cordless phone and now cell phone or celly) rendering the extension a bit lost. We already call "TV" by some of it's newest nicknames in "cable". Often times dropping the "TV" suffix all together. Or Satellite and Dish.

I think the pricing is some what an attempt to limit the speculating and squatting. Also to add some "prestige" to the extension maybe. Developers will absorb the cost.

I also think a big company would consider the dot TV name "a jewel in the crown rather than the crown on the jewel."

What would be the effects of ..... dot VID?

In my humble "O"
namenut

i thought about this too, but almost the whole world use the word TV... and i dont know how it is in the US... but here we say like "oh look you can watch TV in this telephone"... even doe its not a TV its a Telephone... and here we say Cable-TV and not Cable... and so on...

Heh, good point :)
Eventually, I think we'll see a turn around for a lot of people as we see the number of end users increasing.
It'll definitely take time, but I believe in .TV.

Disagree 100%, domains are unique each one different. The Adidias Football shoe Ronaldo endorses is the same shoe for everyone buying it. If people here are seeking validation from .com domainers then IMO they are in for a miserable experience and would have a better time and investment doing anything else other than being in the .tv extension.

No offense HULL but Frank Schilling or Rick Schwartz is never coming to drop big bucks on your .tv portfolio. If they were interested they had a 7 year head start on you. .tv been around since 2000 this is not new, or hot or a landrush. Some have been invested here for 8 years this is not new.
Again IMO

but there is more interest in tv now then in 2000...

you see tv domain name now on british tv...

i do know tv will not make me rich.but i do think i have a good chance of doing well if frank shilling and his clan are with tv

seems odd to me that they dont like tv when you see adverts on tv...iv never seen a mobi advert anywere...ever.

Since they are the biggest buyers of domains and the most influential people in the industry whether they like extension or not will have a fairly direct impact on prices, rick schwartz and .mobi is a pretty good example of that.

As Equity said though people will be waiting forever if they hope these people will someday start buying up a whole lot of .tv's. If you think it is "odd" that they don't like it then I would suggest you think about things a bit more. Neither of the two elements that made them rich (high revenue from parking and low holding costs) are present with .tv. These guys didn't make it by hoping for endusers.

or development.....this has to be pointed out......one development project at a time, if it breaks even or makes a profit move on to your next project...in the meantime if an end user comes knocking - i had ted turner corp come knocking for one of my names, then seek the max...but this is certainly not schilling territory,

what really impresses me with .tv are the sheer amount of developed .tv sites right now....... in a couple of years, it will exponentially explode,,,,,at that stage the big boys of development - end users i mean, tv stations and the like who have not already madse their move will do so and will start snatching up the generics to develop........

I agree that .tv is a reasonably developed tld, not sure about it "exponentially exploding" though. Web growth generally looks to be slowing though I would expect .tv growth will be better than average.

On your other points how many tv station do you know of who have not already made their move online? Somehow I don't think we will ever see large numbers of endusers "snatching up the generics" from speculators. People have been expecting this for at least the last 7 years, I guess we can wait a couple more years, and then extend it a couple more years after that....

Enjoy!

rick is the only one who picked up a mobi, and it was for more than just "follow the money"- if you believe that line he fed, i am surprised. that was a trite statement and to be honest, altho i find your repetitive ramblings quite tired- you of all people snoopy surprised me with that post. i thought you had broader insight than that.

So you think his purchase of flowers.mobi didn't fuel the .mobi market?
